True Form Revealed
True Form Revealed
Elara's POV
My mother - or the thing that looked like my mother - lunged at me with claws that glowed with dark magic.
I rolled to the side just in time, feeling the wind from her attack brush past my face. Where her claws hit the ground, the grass turned black and died quickly.
"Mom, please!" I begged, climbing to my feet. "I know you're still in there somewhere!"
"Your mother is mine now," the Shadow King laughed. "Just like you will be in a few moments."
But something was wrong with what he was saying. As I looked closer at my mother, I noticed her eyes. They were black like the Shadow King's, but every few seconds, I saw a flash of silver - her real color trying to break through.
She was fighting him from the inside.
"Fight it, Mom!" I shouted. "Remember who you are!"
For just a second, she paused. The black in her eyes flashed, and I heard her real voice whisper, "Elara... run..."
Then the Shadow King's control snapped back into place, and she attacked again.
I dodged her claws, but I couldn't keep this up forever. She was faster and stronger than me, and I didn't want to hurt her even if she was being controlled.
Behind me, I could hear Alaric and Kaiden still fighting the shadow wolves, but they were getting tired. The young witch was down to her last few spells. We were losing.
"There has to be another way," I muttered, jumping over a fallen log as my mother chased me around the woods.
That's when I remembered something from my vision during the rite. My mother hadn't just been a Luna Priestess - she'd been the strongest one ever born. Which meant her power was still inside her somewhere, even if the Shadow King was controlling her body.
I stopped running and turned to face her.
"What are you doing?" Alaric yelled. "Keep moving!"
"I have an idea!" I called back.
My mother's controlled body crashed into me, and we both went crashing to the ground. Her hands wrapped around my throat, squeezing tight.
"Nothing personal, daughter," she said in that wrong voice. "But you're in my master's way."
I couldn't breathe, but I managed to grab her hands. Instead of trying to pull her hands away, I closed my eyes and reached out with my Luna Priestess power, looking for the real her hidden under the Shadow King's control.
"What are you doing?" the Shadow King roared. "Stop that!"
I felt my mother's true spirit deep inside, trapped in a cage made of dark magic. She was weak and scared, but she was still fighting.
"I'm here, Mom," I whispered in my mind. "Let me help you."
"Elara?" her real voice echoed back. "How...?"
"We're connected," I told her. "You're my mother. That bond is stronger than any curse."
I poured my power into her, not to hurt the Shadow King's control, but to make her own magic stronger. Silver light began to glow under her dark-veined skin.
"No!" the Shadow King screamed. "I won't let you take her from me!"
He sent a wave of pure darkness at us, but something amazing happened. The full moon above us suddenly blazed brighter, and I felt the Moon Goddess herself giving me strength.
My mother's eyes flashed silver, then stayed that way.
"Thank you, my brave daughter," she said in her real voice, and the Shadow King's power over her shattered like glass.
She stood up, and now I could see her true power. Silver light radiated from her like she was made of stars. When she turned to face the Shadow King, even he took a step backward.
"You made a mistake when you used my daughter to wake up," she told him. "Because now I'm awake too."
"Luna Seraphina," he hissed. "I killed you once. I can do it again."
"You didn't kill me," she said quietly. "You trapped me between life and death, living off my power for twenty-one years. But now that the curse is broken, I'm free to show you what a real Luna Priestess can do."
The Shadow King attacked her with everything he had - bolts of dark lightning, troops of shadow wolves, spells that made the air itself try to choke us. But my mother fought back with power I'd never imagined.
She moved like a dancer, dodging his attacks while shooting beams of silver light that cut through his darkness like a hot knife through butter. When she howled, it wasn't the sound of a regular wolf - it was the voice of the moon itself, and every shadow creature in the grove turned to smoke and disappeared.
"Impossible," the Shadow King gasped, falling to one knee. "How are you this strong?"
"Because I'm not fighting alone," my mother said, reaching out her hand to me. "Elara, it's time."
I didn't understand what she meant, but I took her hand anyway. The moment our fingers touched, I felt her power flowing into me and mine flowing into her. We were linked in a way that went deeper than magic.
"Together," she whispered.
"Together," I agreed.
We raised our free hands at the same time, and silver light exploded from both of us. But this wasn't just our power - it was the power of every Luna Priestess who had ever lived, filtered through our mother-daughter bond.
The Shadow King screamed as the light hit him, and his dark form began to crack and crumble.
"This isn't over!" he yelled as pieces of him broke away. "I'll find another way! I'll come back!"
"Not in our lifetime," my mother said firmly.
The silver light grew brighter and brighter until I couldn't see anything else. When it finally faded, the Shadow King was gone. The grove was peaceful again, with only the soft sound of wind in the trees.
I looked around at my friends. Alaric was hurt but living, leaning against a tree and smiling at me. Kaiden was back in human form, looking at me with wonder. The young witch was sitting on the ground, looking tired but happy.
"Is it over?" I asked my mother.
She hugged me tight, and for the first time in my life, I felt what it was like to have a real mother's love.
"The Shadow King is gone," she said. "But there's something else you need to know."
"What?"
She pulled back and looked at me with sad eyes. "The rite that freed me also changed something important. The barrier between our world and the spirit world is broken now."
"What does that mean?"
"It means other things are going to start coming through. Things that have been waiting for a chance to enter our world."
As if to prove her point, the air near the altar began to shimmer and twist. A crack emerged in the space itself, and through it, I could see a place that definitely wasn't Earth.
Red sky, floating rocks, and creatures with too many eyes and teeth, all looking right at us.
"Mom," I said quietly, "what did we just do?"
Before she could answer, something big and angry pushed its way through the crack and landed in our grove with a ground-shaking thud.
It looked like a dragon made of metal and fire, with eyes like burning coals. When it saw us, it smiled with a mouth full of sword-sized teeth.
"Finally," it growled in a voice like an earthquake. "I've been trapped in the shadow realm for a thousand years, waiting for someone to break the barriers."
It turned its burning gaze on me specifically.
"And you, little Luna Priestess, are going to help me conquer this pretty little world."
