Witch Invasion
Witch Invasion
Elara's POV
The old thing that was coming for us hit the magical barrier around the grove like a truck crashing into a wall.
The whole forest shook, and every bird for miles started screaming and flying away. Trees that had stood for hundreds of years began to crack and fall over. The silver light from the altar flickered like a lamp in the wind.
"What is that thing?" Kaiden shouted, helping me pull Alaric away from the edge of the ritual circle.
I could feel it through my new Luna Priestess skills - something old and angry and hungry. It felt like darkness had come alive and wanted to eat everything good in the world.
"It's what the witches have been serving all these years," the young witch said, her face white with fear. "The Shadow King. He's been sleeping under the earth, waiting for someone powerful enough to wake him up."
My heart dropped into my stomach. "I woke him up? When I broke the curse?"
"All that stolen power from the cursed children had to go somewhere when you freed it," she explained. "It went right to him. He's been feeding on it for decades, getting stronger."
Alaric groaned and opened his eyes. "Elara? What happened?"
"You got hurt protecting me," I said, tears running down my face. "I'm so sorry."
"Don't apologize for being brave," he said, trying to sit up. "Is the ritual complete?"
Before I could answer, the barrier around the grove burst like a soap bubble popping. Dark monsters poured in - things that looked like wolves made of smoke and shadow, with glowing red eyes and teeth like knives.
"Shadow wolves," the young witch whispered. "The Shadow King's army."
But that wasn't the worst part. Behind them came Sabrina, except now I could see what she really was. Her pretty human face was gone, replaced by something with gray skin and black lines running all over it. Her eyes were totally black, and when she smiled, I saw rows of sharp teeth.
"A shadow demon," Alaric breathed, finally understanding. "She's been working for the Shadow King this whole time."
"Smart boy," Sabrina hissed, her voice now sounding like nails on a chalkboard. "I've been watching this little omega for years, waiting for her to grow strong enough to wake my master."
"You used me," I said, rage burning in my chest. "You used my pack, my pain, everything."
"Of course I did. Do you think any of this was an accident? Your rejection, your pain, even your rescue by the pretty king here. I planned all of it to make you stronger."
I felt like I was going to be sick. "Even Kaiden rejecting me?"
"Especially that. Nothing makes power grow faster than a broken heart."
Kaiden looked like someone had punched him. "I didn't know. I swear I didn't know."
"It doesn't matter now," Sabrina laughed. "You've served your role. All of you have."
The ghost wolves started circling us, growling and snapping their teeth. More witches emerged at the edge of the grove - the real coven, not the fake ones who had been pretending to work the ritual.
"Surrender the Luna Priestess," called out an old witch with a stick made of black wood. "Our master wants to meet her personally."
"Over my dead body," Alaric growled, standing up even though he was still hurt.
"That can be arranged," the old witch said with an evil smile.
That's when the real fight started.
Kaiden shifted into his wolf form and launched himself at the closest shadow wolf. Alaric pulled out a sword that glowed with silver light and started cutting through the dark monsters. The young witch who had helped us began throwing magic to keep the other witches back.
But there were too many of them, and more kept coming.
"Elara!" my mother's voice repeated in my mind. "You have to use your full power now! It's the only way to save them!"
"But I don't know how!" I shouted back, avoiding a shadow wolf that tried to bite my arm off.
"Trust your feelings. You are my daughter - the power is in your blood!"
I closed my eyes and reached deep inside myself, looking for the strength I'd acquired from my mother. I could feel it there, like a sleeping dragon waiting to wake up.
But as I started to call on that power, something terrible happened. The Shadow King himself emerged.
He looked like a man made of living darkness, so tall his head almost touched the tops of the trees. His eyes were like black holes, and when he spoke, the ground shook.
"My dear child," he said to me, his voice smooth as silk but cold as ice. "You've grown so strong. Strong enough to be my new body."
"What does that mean?" I asked, backing away from him.
"It means I'm going to take over your body and use your power to destroy this world," he said easily, like he was talking about the weather. "Don't worry - you won't feel a thing after the first few minutes of screaming."
That's when I realized the horrible truth. The Shadow King didn't just want to use my power - he wanted to steal my body and become me. Everything I was, everything I'd learned about myself, would be gone forever.
"You'll have to catch me first," I said, surprised by how steady my voice sounded.
I let my Luna Priestess power burst out of me like a bomb made of silver light. The shadow wolves closest to me just disappeared, turning into smoke. The witches screamed and threw up their arms to protect their eyes.
But the Shadow King just laughed.
"Impressive, little goddess. But you're still just a child playing with forces you don't understand."
He raised one hand, and I felt my power being pulled away from me like water going down a drain. I tried to fight it, but he was too strong.
"No!" Alaric yelled, running toward me with his sword raised.
The Shadow King flicked his other hand, and Alaric went flying backward, hitting a tree so hard that I heard bones crack.
"Alaric!" I screamed.
Kaiden tried to help, but shadow dogs swarmed him, dragging him down. The young witch was circled by the other witches, who were chanting something that made her spells fizzle out.
I was alone, facing a monster that was older and stronger than anything I could imagine.
"Come now, child," the Shadow King said, stepping closer. "Don't make this harder than it needs to be. Your friends are going to die anyway. At least this way, their deaths will serve a reason."
I looked around at the people who had believed in me when no one else would. Alaric, who had saved me and shown me what real love felt like. Kaiden, who was trying to make up for his mistakes. Even the young witch, who had risked everything to help me.
They were all going to die because of me. Because I'd been too weak to stop this.
But then I remembered something my mother's spirit had told me during the ritual: "Strength isn't about power, my daughter. It's about choosing to fight even when you're scared."
I was afraid. But I wasn't going to give up.
"You want my power?" I said to the Shadow King. "Fine. Come and take it."
I reached for every bit of Luna Priestess magic I had, not caring if it burned me up. Silver light burst around me, brighter than the sun.
But just as I was about to attack, the Shadow King smiled and said something that made my blood turn to ice.
"Oh, I forgot to say - I already have part of your power. I've been collecting it for years through the curse. And I used it to make sure that someone you care about is now under my power."
He pointed toward the trees, and my heart stopped.
Standing at the edge of the wood, her eyes glowing with the same black light as the Shadow King's, was someone I'd never expected to see.
My real mother, Luna Seraphina, walked out of the darkness. But she wasn't the loving spirit who had helped me during the process.
She was alive, breathing, and totally under the Shadow King's control.
"Hello, my dear daughter," she said in a voice that was hers but wrong somehow. "I've been waiting so long to meet you. And now, I'm going to help him ruin everything you love."
