Kaiden's Apology
Kaiden's Apology
Elara's POV
I woke up screaming.
My body felt like it was on fire from the inside out. Every muscle burned, every bone ached, and something dark and hungry was clawing at my mind, trying to take control.
"Elara!" Alaric's voice cut through my fear. "I'm here. You're safe."
But I wasn't safe. I could feel whatever Sabrina had shot into me spreading through my blood like poison. It whispered terrible things in my head - promises of power, urges to hurt people, desires to watch the world burn.
"What's happening to me?" I gasped, squeezing Alaric's hand so tight I was probably hurting him.
"I don't know," he said, fear clear in his voice. "But we're going to figure it out."
The door to the room burst open, and Kaiden stumbled in. He looked even worse than before - pale, sweaty, and barely able to stand. But his eyes were focused on me with an intensity that made me uncomfortable.
"Thank the Moon Goddess you're awake," he said, running toward the bed.
"Stay back," Alaric warned, moving between us. "She's not well."
"I can see that," Kaiden snapped. "That's why I need to talk to her. Alone."
"Absolutely not."
"This is still my pack territory," Kaiden said firmly. "And I'm still the Alpha here. I'm ordering you to give us space."
Alaric looked like he wanted to argue, but I put a hand on his arm. "It's okay," I said quietly. "I can handle him."
"Are you sure?"
I nodded, even though I wasn't sure of anything anymore. The dark words in my head were getting louder, and I was scared of what I might do if I lost control.
Alaric squeezed my hand once, then left the room. But I could tell he wasn't going far - probably just outside the door where he could hear everything.
Kaiden closed the door and turned to face me. For a moment, we just stared at each other in silence. This was the first time we'd been alone together since the night he refused me.
"You look different," he said eventually.
"So do you," I responded. "You look terrible."
He laughed bitterly. "I feel terrible. The evil is killing me slowly, and I think I deserve it."
"Why are you here, Kaiden? What do you want?"
Instead of answering, he walked over and knelt beside my bed. The action reminded me of the old days, when he used to visit me in secret. Back then, his presence had made my heart race with excitement. Now I felt nothing but pity for him.
"I need to apologize," he said, his voice shaking. "For everything I did to you. For refusing you, for humiliating you, for breaking your heart when you were the best thing that ever happened to me."
"It's too late for apologies."
"I know. But I have to try." Tears started running down his face. "Elara, I was an idiot. A scared, selfish idiot who threw away his partner because he was too proud to admit he loved her."
"Love?" I felt anger flare up inside me, and the dark words got louder. "You call what you did to me love?"
"Yes," he said desperately. "I loved you from the moment I met you. That's why I was so scared. I'd never felt anything that strong before, and it scared me."
"So you decided to hurt me instead?"
"I thought if I pushed you away, the feelings would go away too. I thought I could choose someone else and forget about you." He reached out like he wanted to touch my hand, but stopped himself. "But I was wrong. So wrong."
The dark thing in my head was feeding off my anger, getting stronger with every word he said. I could feel it pushing at the edges of my mind, trying to make me do something terrible.
"Every night since you left, I've dreamed about you," Kaiden continued. "Every day, I've regretted what I did. And now, with the curse destroying everything, I know the Moon Goddess is punishing me for refusing my true mate."
"Good," I said coldly. "You deserve to be punished."
He flinched like I'd slapped him. "I do. But Elara, there's something else you need to know. I can feel our mate bond weakening."
That shocked me. "What do you mean?"
"The link between us. It's fading more every day. And I think... I think if it disappears totally, I'll die."
I studied his face, looking for signs that he was lying. But he seemed genuinely terrified.
"Please," he begged. "Give me another chance. Let me prove that I can be the mate you deserve. I know I don't have the right to ask, but I'm asking anyway."
I felt the dark words in my head suddenly change. Instead of urging me to hurt him, they were now encouraging me to say yes. To take him back, to use him, to make him suffer the way he'd made me suffer.
But looking at him now, broken and desperate, I realized something important. I didn't love him anymore. I didn't even hate him. All I felt was pity for the pathetic man kneeling beside my bed.
"Kaiden," I said gently. "I can't give you what you're asking for."
"Why not? We're fated mates. The Moon Goddess-"
"The Moon Goddess also gave me free will," I interrupted. "And I choose not to be with you."
"But the bond-"
"The bond was broken the moment you refused me. What you're feeling now isn't love, it's sorrow and fear of dying alone."
His face crumpled. "That's not true."
"Isn't it? If you really loved me, you would have fought for me. You would have stood up to anyone who questioned your choice. Instead, you chose the easy road and threw me away."
"I was young and stupid-"
"You were cruel and selfish," I said strongly. "And even if I could forgive you, I could never trust you again. What happens the next time you get scared? The next time liking me becomes inconvenient?"
He opened his mouth to argue, but I held up my hand to stop him.
"I've found someone who sees my worth without me having to show it. Someone who chose me not because of fate, but because of who I am. Why would I give that up for someone who only wants me now because he's afraid of dying?"
Kaiden's shoulders shook as he started crying louder. "So that's it? You're picking him over me?"
"I'm choosing myself," I said. "For the first time in my life, I'm putting my happiness first."
He nodded slowly, wiping his eyes. "I understand. I don't like it, but I understand."
He stood up to leave, but then paused at the door. "Elara? I want you to know that even if you can't forgive me, I'm glad you found happiness. You deserve it."
"Thank you," I said softly.
After he left, I sat alone with my thoughts. The chat had gone better than I'd expected. I'd been honest with him and with myself, and it felt good to finally close that chapter of my life.
But then the dark whispers in my head started laughing.
"Foolish girl," a voice that sounded like Sabrina said inside my mind. "Did you really think it would be that easy?"
"What are you talking about?" I said out loud.
"The needle, dear one. It wasn't just meant to control you. It was meant to turn you into the perfect weapon by making you lose everyone you care about."
My blood turned to ice. "What did you do?"
"Nothing yet. But in about ten minutes, the real effects will begin. And when they do, you're going to kill everyone in this building - starting with that pathetic excuse for an alpha who just poured his heart out to you."
I tried to stand up, tried to run, but my body wouldn't obey me. The dark thing in my head was taking control, and there was nothing I could do to stop it.
"Alaric!" I screamed as loud as I could. "Get everyone out! Get them out now!"
But it was too late. I could already feel my humanity slipping away, replaced by something cold and hungry and dangerous.
The killer was waking up, and it was going to use my body to kill everyone I'd ever cared about.
