Chapter 57 THE BOY WHO STOOD FOR HER
Chapter 57 THE BOY WHO STOOD FOR HER
Ella crumpled into Raine’s arms the moment her soul-thread finished rewriting itself. Her body felt weightless, her skin too cold, her breath too shallow.
“Ella?”
Raine shook her gently.
“Ella—please—please wake up—”
She didn’t stir.
Her head fell against his shoulder, her hair spilling over his chest like a dark river he recognized without knowing why.
Kael dragged himself across the ground, each breath a broken gasp, his fingers clawing at the dirt to stay conscious.
“Raine—listen to me—”
His voice cracked violently.
“Ella—she gave you—part of herself—she’s—she’s fading—”
Raine clutched her tighter, panic flooding his expression.
“No—NO—she can’t— she can’t leave— she gave me something—she said she was still hers—she said I was her beginning—”
Kael coughed, a tremor running through his entire body.
“You must protect her. Right now… she’s defenseless. If the Echo touches her soul in this state— it’s over.”
Raine swallowed, staring at Ella’s pale face.
His Ella.
He didn’t remember their past.
But he remembered her love.
He remembered the warmth of her soul pouring into him.
He remembered the truth inside her voice when she whispered his name.
Suddenly, instinct rose inside him—
not memory,
but emotion strong enough to create its own gravity.
He shifted Ella into his arms, cradling her protectively against his chest.
“I’ll keep her safe,” he whispered.
The forest darkened.
The air turned sharp.
The Second Echo stepped forward, its radiant-black form shimmering with fractured reflections.
It looked at Ella.
And smiled.
The Vessel is weakened.
This is the moment she can be unmade.
Raine’s entire body went cold.
“No.”
He tightened his grip on Ella.
“You stay away from her.”
The Echo tilted its head, as though amused by a child challenging a storm.
You would defend her?
You — who does not even know who she is?
Raine’s jaw clenched.
“I know enough.”
You know nothing.
You do not know how she broke the merging.
How she broke you.
How she rewrote fate itself.
Raine flinched.
But he didn’t move.
The Echo drifted closer.
Kael forced himself upright with a cry, light flickering weakly across his palms.
“Raine—RUN! I can’t— I can’t stop it— the binding— it’s—”
He collapsed again.
The Echo ignored him.
Its gaze remained locked on Ella’s unconscious face.
She is valuable in ways you cannot comprehend.
More than the Vessel.
More than a partner to the Mirror.
Her soul is becoming something new…
something I must claim before it stabilizes.
Raine stepped back instinctively, shielding Ella with his entire body.
“You’re not touching her.”
The Echo studied him.
Then spoke softly:
You are not bound to her.
Not anymore.
You have no past with her.
No duty.
No destiny.
Why defend her?
Raine’s pulse pounded.
He could feel Ella’s heart flutter weakly against his chest.
He could feel her warmth fading.
He could feel the imprint she gave him — a piece of her soul — glowing inside him like a secret sun.
He lowered his head, whispering against her hair:
“Because she saved me.”
He looked back up, eyes fierce.
“And I won’t lose her.”
For the first time, the Echo paused.
Illogical.
Unwritten.
Impossible.
Raine stepped forward, light beginning to shimmer at his hands again.
“Get away from her.”
The Echo laughed.
A cold, echoing sound like glass breaking.
And what will you do, Empty Boy?
You have no power—
Raine’s creation energy burst outward in a sudden, instinctive flare.
Not controlled.
Not refined.
Pure.
White.
A ring of light exploded from the ground beneath him, sweeping outward in a circle so bright the Echo recoiled, hissing as the wave washed over its form and burned the edges of its memory-light.
Raine stood trembling, staring at his own hands in shock.
“I… I can do this…?”
Kael choked out a breath.
“Creation magic… that strong… already…?”
The Echo steadied itself, expression darkening.
Unacceptable.
You were meant to be rewritten.
Not awakened.
Raine lifted Ella higher in his arms, her head resting against his shoulder.
“I don’t care what I was meant to be.”
His voice shook.
But he did not step back.
“I choose her.”
The Echo’s scream cracked the remaining trees.
THEN YOU DEFY ME.
Raine braced.
Ella’s body twitched faintly in his arms — as though some part of her soul recognized what he’d said.
And Kael, gasping on the ground, whispered through bloodied lips:
“He’s choosing… again… Ella… he’s choosing her again…”
The Echo’s form brightened with rage.
If the Vessel cannot be taken—
then the boy will be.
I will fix him.
I will perfect him.
I will rewrite him before he finishes rewrit—
Raine roared.
“NO!”
And with Ella in his arms, he unleashed his first true creation burst.
Light erupted—
wild, raw, searing—
chasing the Echo back into the trees in a scorching wave.
Ella stirred once, weakly, against his chest.
Raine held her tighter.
“I’ve got you,” he whispered shakily.
“I’m not letting anyone take you.”
Kael slid toward unconsciousness, whispering one last, broken warning:
“Raine… take her… to the Vale… before the Echo… returns…”
And the forest fell still.
Raine looked down at Ella’s sleeping face.
“Ella…” he whispered. “I remember how to protect you. Even if I don’t remember us.”
He kissed her forehead—
gently, carefully—
and turned toward the path Kael had indicated.
A new fear shadowed his eyes.
A new strength burned in his hands.
And behind them in the darkness—
the Second Echo trembled with fury.
