Chapter 55 THE SECOND ECHO CALLS HIS NAME

Chapter 55 THE SECOND ECHO CALLS HIS NAME
The figure stepped fully from the shadows.

It was not like the first Echo — fractured, flickering, broken.
This one was whole.

Its form sharpened into a man-shaped silhouette made of silver and dark glass, reflections of memories swirling just beneath the surface of its skin. Its eyes—two lines of shimmering light—locked directly onto Raine.

Ella instantly moved in front of him.

“Stay behind me.”

Raine froze, breath catching, gripping her hand so tightly she felt the tremor run through both of them.

Kael staggered to Ella’s other side, one hand braced against a tree, his blade raised but trembling. His energy was fading too quickly—binding symptoms spreading like cracks under his skin.

The Second Echo tilted its head slightly, studying them.

You smell of broken destinies.
Its voice was smooth, old, almost curious.
The recreation of a soul. The binding of another. And the Vessel who unmade the past.

Ella’s jaw clenched. “Don’t come any closer.”

The Second Echo did not listen.

It stepped forward — slowly, gracefully — as though approaching something precious.

Raine inhaled sharply.

He didn’t move toward it.
He didn’t lean forward.
He didn’t physically respond.

But his soul did.

Ella felt it through their fragile merging-thread — a pull, a magnetic whisper, an ache she recognized too well.

The same pull Raine once felt toward the first Echo.

“NO.”
Ella grabbed Raine’s wrist with both hands, grounding him, anchoring him. “Raine—listen to my voice. Stay with me.”

Raine blinked, confused fear growing in his eyes. “Ella… what is that thing? Why does it feel like—like it's calling me?”

Ella swallowed hard. “Because it wants something from you.”

Kael rasped weakly, barely holding himself up. “Ella—this Echo… it’s different. Stronger. Faster. It will not negotiate.”

The Second Echo smiled faintly.

Correct. I do not bargain.
I claim.

Ella’s magic exploded instinctively, silver-black light crackling along her arms.

“Raine is NOT yours.”

The Echo’s gaze shifted to her — slowly, deliberately — and the ground trembled beneath their feet.

Yet you stand between us.
A pause.
Again.

Ella stiffened. “Again?”

Kael’s head snapped toward the Echo, eyes widening.

“Ella—don’t listen to it—”

Oh let her listen,
the Second Echo murmured, drifting closer,
for there are truths she has not allowed herself to see.

Ella’s heartbeat pounded painfully.

“Stop walking.”

The Echo did not stop.

Raine’s hand began to tremble violently in hers. “Ella… I can hear it. Inside me. It’s whispering something—”

“What?” Ella demanded.

He shook his head, voice cracking. “I—I don’t know— but it feels like—like it knows me better than I know myself.”

Ella’s eyes burned with fear and fury.
She wrapped an arm around him, pulling him close enough that she could feel his heartbeat.

“You don’t belong to it,” she whispered fiercely.

The Second Echo’s head tilted.

No?
Then tell him, Vessel —
why does he hear my voice in the places memory cannot reach?
Why does he feel me
in the spaces you cannot fill?

Ella froze.

Raine looked at her with trembling confusion. “Ella… what is it talking about?”

Ella couldn’t breathe.

Kael tried to step forward but stumbled, catching himself on his blade as blood trickled from his nose. The binding was crushing him.

The Echo’s eyes glowed brighter, silver splitting through the dark like lightning.

You think I seek the Mirror you erased.
A pause.
But I do not want who he was.
I want who he is now.
The Empty Boy.
The clean slate.
The soul with no past.
The one who can be rebuilt—
properly this time.

Ella’s blood turned to ice.

Raine recoiled, shaking his head. “No—no—stop—STOP—get out of my head—”

Ella held him tighter, her magic erupting in defensive rings around them. “Raine, stay with me. I’m here. I’m right here.”

The Second Echo stopped walking.

Finally.

Standing just outside Ella’s protective circle of light.

It lifted one hand, palm facing Raine.

Not threatening.

Inviting.

Come.
I can give you meaning.
Purpose.
Identity.
A place where you are not broken,
not lost,
not afraid.

Raine’s breath hitched, pain rippling through his features.

“Ella… I don’t know who I am. I don’t know anything. And it— it says it can fix that—”

Ella felt something in her chest rupture.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Raine,” she whispered, touching his face,
“You don’t need to remember who you were.
We can choose who you become.”

Raine trembled, leaning into her touch as if his body remembered even if his mind didn’t.

The Echo’s voice turned cold.

She cannot give you what she destroyed.
She erased your past.
Your connection.
Your memory.
What she broke—
only I can restore.

Ella staggered.

The words pierced.

Because they were not entirely false.

She whispered, voice shaking with guilt, “I didn’t mean to erase everything… I just wanted to save you.”

Raine looked at her with wide, soft eyes.

“You saved me?”

Ella nodded, tears falling. “I saved your life. But your past… it was the cost.”

Raine swallowed, breath trembling.
“Then I don’t want my past.”
He touched her hand softly.
“I want what begins with you.”

Ella sobbed.

And the Second Echo’s expression cracked
like something ancient breaking.

No.
NO.
That is not the choice you were meant to make—

Kael gasped and collapsed, the binding ripping through him.

Raine stepped protectively in front of Ella—
instinct
memoryless
but deeply, fiercely hers—

as the Echo unleashed its first attack.

Silver-black light detonated across the forest—

And everything
went
white.
