Chapter 45 THE MOMENT HE SLIPS AWAY
Chapter 45 THE MOMENT HE SLIPS AWAY
Light shattered across the clearing.
A rush of wind knocked Ella backward, stealing her breath as the world detonated into silver and shadow. She hit the ground hard, her palms scraping against glowing sigils as the air split open with a sound like a heartbeat cracking.
“RAINE!”
Her scream tore the silence apart.
She pushed up on trembling arms, vision blurring—
—and saw him suspended in the shimmering haze.
Not held by hands.
Not bound by force.
Held by memory.
The Second Echo stood before him, its shape flickering—silver shadow flowing like smoke caught in moonlight. No face. No eyes. And yet Ella felt it watching her. Watching him.
Raine floated as if weightless, his head bowed, his breath shallow. Ella saw his fingers twitch as if reaching for her—then fall still.
“LET HIM GO!” she cried, her voice breaking.
Her magic flared wildly in response—silver-black fire racing down her arms, sparking against the sigils in the dirt. The trees around her bent low, reacting to her fear, her rage, her awakening.
Kael sprinted forward, skidding to a stop beside her. “Ella—wait—don’t push your magic yet—you’ll tear the merging—”
“I DON’T CARE!” she screamed, trying to stand, trying to throw herself back toward the Echo.
Kael grabbed her wrist. “If you blow the merging now, both of you will collapse—”
“LET ME GO!”
She shoved him back with a force she didn’t know she had.
Kael hit the ground hard.
Raine stirred at the sound—his eyelids fluttering, breath catching—but the Echo’s glow intensified, wrapping him in a shimmering cocoon.
Ella stumbled forward, tears burning hot. “Raine—Raine, look at me—please—look at me—”
Her voice cracked on the last word.
Raine tried.
She saw it—saw the fight in him—saw his hand twitch as if he were lifting it toward her.
But the Echo whispered.
A sound that wasn’t sound.
A feeling.
A pull deep in the merging, threading through Raine’s soul.
Come.
Raine inhaled sharply as if choking on air. His eyes opened—
—and Ella’s heart shattered.
Because his eyes weren’t his own anymore.
They glowed.
Silver.
Black.
But with something else beneath—something ancient, broken, yearning.
“Ella…”
His voice trembled, distant and aching.
“It knows me.”
Her breath froze. “No… Raine… no, that’s not you—it’s pulling you—fight it—”
He shook his head weakly. “I’m trying… but… Ella… it feels like remembering.”
Ella felt the ground sway under her feet.
“Remembering what?” she whispered.
He looked at her then—really looked—and she saw the truth rising like a tide behind his pupils:
Recognition.
Fear.
And the echo of centuries-old sorrow.
Kael forced himself upright, breath ragged. “Ella—listen—if the Echo pulls him into its plane, he won’t be able to come back.”
Ella’s blood went cold.
“How do we stop it?”
Kael’s voice broke.
“You can’t reach him with magic. It’s too unstable right now.”
“THEN HOW DO I REACH HIM?” she screamed.
Kael closed his eyes.
“With your heart.”
Ella froze.
Raine’s breath hitched at the sound of her scream. His fingers curled weakly, as if reaching for something familiar in the storm.
Ella stepped forward, her hands trembling, her soul trembling harder. “Raine. Listen to me. Not to it. To me.”
The Echo flickered, tightening its pull—
Raine’s back arched—
light spiraled around him like a cage—
But Ella didn’t stop.
“YOU ARE NOT ALONE,” she cried. “I am your anchor. You are my mirror. Come back to me.”
Raine’s lips parted—
pain crossing his features—
a tear slipping down his cheek.
“Ella…”
The Echo surged with anger.
A violent flare of shadow spiraled outward—
Ella threw herself toward him—
—and slammed into a barrier of silver force that burned her palms, knocking her backward.
She hit the ground hard.
Pain shot through her ribs.
But she pushed up again, screaming:
“RAINE—DON’T LET IT TAKE YOU—PLEASE—DON’T LET GO OF ME—”
The Echo tilted its faceless head.
Its voice slid into both their minds, impossibly soft:
He was mine
long before
he was yours.
Ella gasped as if stabbed.
Raine cried out—
“NO—”
—and the merging between them snapped taut, glowing violently.
He reached for her.
Ella reached back—
Fingers almost touching—
Almost—
Almost—
The Echo pulled him back in a burst of silver shadow—
And Raine disappeared into the light.
Ella’s scream tore the sky open.
Raine vanished into the burst of silver shadow.
One heartbeat he was reaching for her—
the next he was gone.
The clearing collapsed into silence.
Ella stared at the empty space where he had stood, her breath frozen in her lungs. Her fingers remained outstretched, trembling, as if the ghost of his touch still hovered between them.
Then—
The merging snapped.
A violent, searing shock tore through her chest, ripping a cry from her throat as she fell to her knees. The pain was unlike anything she had felt before—too deep, too raw, like losing a limb she didn’t know she had until it was cut away.
“Ella!” Kael rushed toward her—
But she was already breaking.
