Chapter 42 – The Tables Have Turned**
Vivienne Evernight walked into Xavier’s estate like she owned it.
Her sharp heels clicked against the marble floor, her pristine white coat draped elegantly over her shoulders. She exuded the same **icy control** that had made her a force in the business world—ruthless, calculating, and **always five steps ahead.**
But she wasn’t **ahead** anymore.
Not when it came to Raine.
Xavier leaned against the staircase railing, arms crossed, his golden eyes cold. Reed stood beside him, watching like he was ready to throw Vivienne out at a moment’s notice. Ivy, still lounging on the couch, sipped her drink like this was **prime entertainment.**
But it was Raine who stepped forward.
**Not Xavier. Not Reed. Not Ivy.**
Raine.
Vivienne’s **green eyes** flickered with something unreadable as she took in her stepdaughter’s presence. **Raine looked different. Stronger. More confident.**
And that pissed Vivienne off.
“Look at you,” Vivienne mused, her voice smooth but lined with something venomous. “Dressed like you actually belong here.”
Raine smirked. **She smirked.**
And that caught Vivienne off guard.
“Strange, isn’t it?” Raine mused, tilting her head. “How the girl you used to treat like dirt is now standing in a place you wouldn’t dare disrespect.”
Vivienne’s lips pressed into a thin line.
“You should watch your tone,” she said coolly. “You’re still just a—”
“A what?” Raine cut her off, stepping closer. “An Omega? A nobody? A weak little girl?”
Her voice **didn’t waver.**
Vivienne **blinked.**
The woman who had once **terrified** Raine, who had controlled every part of her life, suddenly **felt smaller.**
Raine’s voice dropped lower. **Sharper.**
“You don’t control me anymore.”
Vivienne’s jaw twitched.
“Is that so?” she murmured. “You think a new wardrobe and some attention from powerful men make you important?”
Ivy **laughed.**
“Oh, Vivienne, honey,” Ivy said, setting her drink down. “You really have no idea what’s going on, do you?”
Vivienne’s eyes flicked toward Ivy, narrowing slightly.
Xavier finally spoke, his voice **low and deadly.**
“You’re here for a reason. Get to it.”
Vivienne straightened. The power struggle between her and Xavier was obvious—**two dominant forces, neither willing to bend.**
But **Xavier wasn’t the one who had to deal with her today.**
Raine was.
Vivienne exhaled slowly, then turned her full attention back to Raine. “You’ve been making a lot of noise lately. Getting involved with people you don’t understand. Do you even realize how dangerous that is?”
Raine held her gaze. **Unafraid.**
“You’re the one who should be worried,” Raine said smoothly.
Vivienne’s brow lifted slightly.
“Oh? And why is that?”
Raine took another step forward.
“Because I’m not the same girl you left behind.”
Her voice was **sharp. Lethal.**
Vivienne didn’t react at first. But there was something in her eyes—**something calculating.**
“You’re playing a dangerous game, Raine.”
Raine smiled. **A slow, dangerous smile.**
“No,” she said, tilting her head. “I’ve just finally learned how to win.”
\---
The tension **was thick.**
Reed was watching with interest, clearly enjoying the show. Ivy had her phone out like she was recording a reality TV episode. **And Xavier…**
Xavier was **watching Raine.**
His golden eyes followed her movements, studying the way she carried herself—**the way she was no longer backing down.**
Vivienne studied her, too.
Finally, the woman **sighed.**
“I came here to warn you,” she said. “You’re stepping into a world you don’t understand. Do you really think Xavier Draven will protect you forever?”
Raine’s smile didn’t fade.
“You’re right,” she said. “Xavier won’t protect me forever.”
Vivienne’s expression flickered with satisfaction—
Until Raine leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a **dangerous whisper.**
“Because I won’t need him to.”
Silence.
Vivienne **stilled.**
For the first time, **genuine hesitation crossed her features.**
“You’re bluffing,” she murmured.
Raine took another step, closing the space between them.
“You’ve spent years making sure I stayed weak. Tearing me down. Convincing me I was nothing,” she said, voice smooth, deadly. “But guess what, Vivienne?”
She smiled again.
“I’m not weak anymore.”
Something in Vivienne’s **gaze darkened.**
Raine tilted her head. **"Does that scare you?"**
The challenge **was clear.**
Vivienne’s fingers twitched at her side.
But then, she **schooled her features.** The same calm, controlled mask she always wore.
“You’re making a mistake,” she said.
“No,” Raine corrected. **“I’m fixing yours.”**
Vivienne exhaled sharply, then turned toward the door.
But before she left, she glanced over her shoulder one last time.
“I hope you’re ready, Raine.”
Raine’s smirk didn’t fade.
“I’ve never been more ready in my life.”
Vivienne finally left.
And the moment the door **clicked shut,** Ivy let out a loud **whoop.**
“That. Was. AMAZING.”
Reed **grinned.** “Damn, Raine. Didn’t think you had that in you.”
Raine turned to them, still feeling the rush of adrenaline in her veins.
And then, her gaze landed on Xavier.
His golden eyes burned with something **undeniable.**
Something **raw.**
Something **hungry.**
He didn’t say anything.
He didn’t need to.
Because **the way he looked at her said everything.**
**Raine Evernight wasn’t the same girl anymore.**
And Xavier Draven **liked it.**
**But then—**
Raine sucked in a sharp breath. Her knees wobbled. **The adrenaline rush was fading fast.**
She had just **stood up to Vivienne Evernight.**
Vivienne. **The woman who had made her life a living hell.**
Her chest heaved. She hadn’t even realized how much air she had been holding in.
“Oh—oh shit,” Raine mumbled.
Her vision **tilted.**
And just as she felt herself **stagger**, Ivy **darted forward**, catching her arm with a laugh.
“Oh my god, you almost fainted.” Ivy’s **eyes were wide with amusement.** “That was badass, Raine, but next time, try breathing.”
Reed chuckled, shaking his head. “Damn, you had me fooled. Thought you were a full-blown warrior back there.”
“I *am* a warrior,” Raine grumbled, still gripping Ivy’s arm for balance.
Ivy smirked. “Yeah, yeah. A warrior with no oxygen.”
Xavier, still silent, strode over. His large, warm hand cupped her **waist**, steadying her. His grip was firm, his presence **unshakable.**
Raine **sucked in another breath.**
“Next time you decide to challenge a monster like Vivienne,” Xavier murmured, his voice **low, teasing, but darkly approving**, “remember to stand your ground *and* breathe.”
His fingers **brushed against her hip.**
Raine’s pulse **jumped.**
Ivy and Reed exchanged a **knowing look.**
And suddenly, Raine realized—
