VOL II: The Hard Truth
“I knew you’d come back. So, what do you want to know? Everything? Or half of it?”
I had gone back to the stream to visit the mermaid.
That mini vision did not put me at ease at all.
Who was that man? And why did I have a vision of him?
“I just want to know who poisoned my mother, her motive, and who that man with silver and dark hair was,” I said.
“Hmmm… the first is complicated, but the second is not. Your mother was poisoned by her friend, Morwenna. The likely reason was because she wanted to remove any means of a Golden Witch appearing, since they are usually born to earth witches.”
“A Golden Witch?” I asked.
“Yes. A Golden Witch. The masters of the elements. A powerful type of witch that only appears every hundred years. They possess immense magical powers and have almost no limitations when it comes to spells, hexes, and curses. You could say they are unstoppable,” she said, looking at me fondly.
“You are a Golden Witch, Luana.”
I froze.
It was enough that she said I was a witch, but now a powerful being?
“How sure are you? You said my mother was poisoned because they didn’t want a Golden Witch appearing, and I was already born, so maybe I was supposed to have a sibling, and that would have been the Golden Witch.”
Andressa placed a hand on her chin.
“I did hear that she told Morwenna she was pregnant, but it was a lie. She did it to protect you. I think she suspected that you were the Golden Witch, and one strong enough to stop the prophecy,” she said.
“Prophecy? What prophecy?”
Her face turned somewhat serious.
“This is where your second question comes in.
The man with the silver and dark hair is King Riccardo Castellano, the Demon King of Vacuità.”
“The prophecy said that he was going to destroy all supernatural beings. Mermaids, werewolves, vampires, ogres, and even all the witches. The only person who could stop him was you. But your mother didn’t tell anyone that it was you and lied about being pregnant to keep the demons away.”
I sighed. This was overwhelming.
“What about my mom? What type of sickness does she have? Is it something that can be cured?”
“Yes, it is. But you can’t do anything since you don’t have your powers.”
I still couldn’t fully believe what she was saying, but for my mom, I was willing to try anything to make her better.
“How… how did I lose my powers?” I asked.
She looked skeptical, as if contemplating whether to tell me or not.
“It was your father… he locked them away.”
“Papa? What do you mean?”
Wait… don’t tell me…
“Yes, your father is just like you. He’s a wizard. A powerful one at that. The Supreme Lord, the highest-ranking wizard in the world.”
“After destroying Vacuità, he wanted to go somewhere quiet and peaceful and live with you all without magic, just as normal people. So, he erased your memories and took away your powers, locking them away.”
I sat on the ground. My head throbbed.
“Luana, are you okay?” Andressa asked, looking worried.
“How do you know so much? How can I trust you?” I asked, holding my head.
“Before carrying out the operation to destroy Vacuità, your father went to gather allies from all species. He told my mother everything.”
She paused, then looked at me seriously.
“Your mother’s illness is deteriorating. The poison she took dealt a major toll on her body and her magic. Your father thinks she’s fine now, but from what I’ve observed after visiting her, she’s getting weaker by the minute. Mermaids can see through deep illnesses.”
“If you don’t do something, she could die.”
A lump formed in my throat. I needed to save Mom so she could come home and be with us. I didn’t care if I was a witch before. Papa was right to take my magic away.
If having magic could cause so much pain and damage, I didn’t want it.
“And the Demon King?” I asked.
“That’s going to be a problem. We all thought he died, so I have no idea why he’s still alive. A spell, maybe? I’m not sure. But there is someone who can answer all your questions and help you get your powers back.”
“Who?” I asked.
“Your cousin, Aurelio Vercelli. He’s a powerful wizard from the Vercelli line.”
She chuckled.
“You have no idea how powerful you are, bestie. The Vercelli's are the real deal, and you’re part of the line.”
“I don’t care. I’ll accept the powers to heal my mother, then when I’m done helping her, I’ll ask to get rid of them.”
“I’m no witch.”
