Chapter 10 — Bad News

Cassia:

Lukan is alive. Oh my god. I listen as Nevaeh tells Mathias and the other guy about Lukan’s reappearance, but I refuse to participate. I’m still shocked by the night’s events.

It also doesn’t help that I’m still feeling a bit heated after struggling in Mathias’ lap. What the hell am I doing? This man rejected me, and I’m turned on.

My thoughts are halted when Mikhail parks in a garage and turns off the ignition. Without a word, everyone files out of the car. Nerves frayed, I look around the unfamiliar surroundings. Nevaeh must notice my nervousness because she moves towards me and takes my hand. “Are you okay, Cassia?” I nod my head. There’s no way that I’m going to tell her that my body is still thrumming with arousal from Mathias’ touch.

“Have you ever been to the Council headquarters?” She asks softly. I shake my head. “No, I haven’t. I’ve never had a reason to.”

Just then, two men step out of a nearby door and stop in front of Mathias. “Sir, I think we found something.”

Mathias nods his head authoritatively. “Let’s go to my office.” Everyone files stiffly into Mathias’ office, which is surprisingly stark. The walls are white, and in the middle of the room is a black glass table, two leather chairs for guests, and a leather chair for him. The only thing that keeps the office from being completely depressing is the beautiful sword encased in a glass box behind his desk. Otherwise, there are no pictures or mementos. As we walk in, Mathias makes an introduction. “Gadriel, Isaiah, this is my daughter Nevaeh, her mate Mikhail, and Lukan Garron’s daughter, Cassia Garron.” Everyone nods in welcome, their faces set with suspicion when they land on mine, but I don’t care. It’s not my fault Lukan’s my dad.

Remaining professional, the council enforcers offer me and Nevaeh a seat, which we take. “What do you have?” Mathias asks with a grim frown. I can almost feel the tension heightening as the men prepare to give us the news. Unfortunately, the men have a right to be tense because the news is not good.
