The air inside the warehouse was thick, charged with tension. The dim lights flickered above us, casting unstable shadows around the vast space. Richard walked in slowly, his eyes scanning every corner with the confidence of a man who believed he had already won.

His men spread out, taking strategic positions, blocking every visible exit. I felt Clara’s grip tighten on my hand before she discreetly let go, preparing herself for what was coming.

Marcelo was on the rooftop, giving us a slight advantage with his elevated position. Evelyn was crouched behind a stack of metal crates, ready to execute the second part of our plan.

Now, it was all about keeping Richard in the game long enough.

“What a scene,” Richard mocked, a smirk playing on his lips. “Do you really think you stand a chance against me?”

I took a step forward, keeping my expression unreadable. “You always had a bad habit of underestimating people.”

He chuckled, but the sound was empty, void of humor. “And you always had a bad habit of thinking you could fight me.”

Clara moved beside me, her posture as firm as mine. “We’ve faced worse than you.”

Richard tilted his head, his gaze finally landing on her. “And you… Clara. The woman I spent so much time trying to capture.”

The way he said her name made my fingers itch to pull the trigger right then and there. But I couldn’t. Not yet.

“And now here you are. Surrendering?” He raised an eyebrow. “That doesn’t sound like you.”

Clara crossed her arms, her gaze sharp. “Not everything is what it seems.”

Richard’s eyes narrowed, beginning to realize something was off. I could see the calculations in his expression as he tried to decipher our true plan.

Evelyn acted first.

With a swift tap on her laptop, the warehouse doors slammed shut behind us, and the lights cut out completely, plunging the space into darkness.

Chaos erupted.

Gunfire rang out, shouts filled the space. I grabbed Clara and pulled her behind a stack of crates while Marcelo, from his rooftop position, started taking down Richard’s men.

Richard wasted no time. He moved quickly, his trained instincts keeping him from panicking. “Emergency lights, now!” he barked, and almost immediately, red backup lights flickered on along the walls, casting an ominous glow over the scene.

I gripped my gun, feeling my heart hammer in my chest. Clara beside me did the same, her breathing steady, though I knew she wasn’t fully recovered yet.

“Now!” Marcelo called from above, firing at the men closing in on Richard.

Evelyn sprang from her hiding place and shot at the electrical panels, sparks flying as wires overloaded.

The plan was working. We were controlling the battlefield.

But Richard was still standing.

He ducked behind a column, barking orders at his men. “Take them down!”

The gunfire continued, and then I felt Clara tugging at my arm.

“We need to get to him,” she whispered, her eyes blazing with more than just determination.

I knew what she meant. As long as Richard was alive, he would never stop hunting us. It didn’t matter how many times we ran.

So, nodding, I took her hand, and together, we moved.

Our advance was swift. We maneuvered behind stacks of crates and rusted machinery, getting closer and closer to Richard.

When we finally found him, he was alone, momentarily separated from his men.

He noticed us immediately and smirked. “Finally decided to stop hiding?”

I raised my gun, my finger steady on the trigger. “This ends now, Richard.”

He laughed. “You really think you can end me?”

Clara moved beside me, her gun aimed at him. “It’s not just her. It’s me too.”

Richard glanced between us, his smirk faltering. For the first time, I saw something resembling doubt in his eyes.

“You don’t have the guts,” he provoked. “After all, you two have always been the ones running.”

Clara took a slow, deep breath. Then, in a single fluid motion, she pulled the trigger.

The shot hit Richard’s shoulder, making him stumble backward.

I didn’t hesitate. I lunged forward, kicking his gun out of his hand before pressing mine to his head.

Richard gasped, clutching his wounded shoulder, but he still managed a laugh. “Congratulations, girls. But this isn’t over.”

The sound of heavy footsteps approached, and I knew his reinforcements were coming.

Time was running out.

“We need to get out of here,” Clara said urgently.

I didn’t want to leave him alive, but we knew this wasn’t the end. Not yet.

Marcelo appeared at the end of the corridor, motioning for us to move. “Come on, now!”

Clara grabbed my hand, and I hesitated for only a second before throwing one last look at Richard.

“This was just the beginning,” I whispered before turning and running.

As we rushed out of the warehouse, Marcelo was already behind the wheel of a getaway car, engine running. Evelyn jumped in right after, typing something furiously on her phone.

Before I could ask what she was doing, an explosion shook the ground. The warehouse was engulfed in flames, a bright light illuminating the night sky.

The destruction plan had been activated.

Clara gripped my hand tightly, her eyes reflecting the fire in the distance.

“Do you think he’s dead?” I asked, my voice low.

No one answered.

But deep down, I knew.

Richard wouldn’t disappear that easily.
