Clara’s declaration hung in the air like an impending storm. “Now we have to strike first.” Her words echoed in my mind as she returned Evelyn’s phone and began pacing the room, her expression determined.

“Do you have a plan?” I asked, my voice wavering between fear and resolve.

Clara stopped and looked at me directly. “Not yet, but we need one. Richard is moving faster than I anticipated, and if they know about the safe, it means they have eyes and ears closer than we thought.”

“So, what’s in the safe?” Evelyn asked, crossing her arms. “Is it something that can really bring him down?”

Clara nodded, though her expression was grim. “The documents in the safe contain evidence of illegal transactions, money laundering, and threats Richard used against people in the past. If we can safely release this information, we can destroy his reputation and corner him.”

Clara began organizing the documents Evelyn had brought, spreading them across the living room table. “We need to cross-reference these with the data in the safe,” she explained. “If we have a complete picture, we can send it to the right people.”

“And how do we do that without Richard catching us first?” I asked, moving closer to the table.

“That’s the hard part,” Clara admitted. “The safe is in a property Richard still controls. To access it, we’ll need to get in without being seen.”

“That’s insane,” Evelyn muttered, shaking her head. “You’re talking about breaking into a property protected by men who clearly have no scruples.”

“It’s our only option,” Clara countered, her voice firm. “Richard is cornering us. If we stand still, he’ll win.”

My stomach churned as I listened to their discussion. Clara was right, but the idea of stepping directly into Richard’s territory terrified me. Still, the thought of continuing to run without ever facing the problem head-on was even worse.

In the hours that followed, Clara outlined the plan. She had contacts who could help disable the property’s security systems long enough for us to access the safe. Evelyn was tasked with monitoring communications and creating a secure channel to transmit the data once we had it.

“And me?” I asked, feeling restless about my apparent exclusion from the plan.

Clara hesitated before answering. “You’ll stay with me.”

“I can do more than that,” I insisted, crossing my arms.

“Bela, I know you want to help,” Clara said, stepping closer to me. “But your safety is my priority. You’re the one Richard wants. I can’t risk you being exposed.”

Frustration burned inside me, but the look in her eyes disarmed me. “Fine,” I murmured. “But if something goes wrong, I want you to promise me you won’t do anything reckless.”

Clara gave a faint smile. “I promise.”

The night was dark and silent as we approached Richard’s property. Clara drove with the same cool focus I had come to recognize, her eyes sharp as they scanned for any signs of danger. Evelyn sat in the back seat, monitoring Clara’s contacts through her laptop.

“We’re inside the perimeter,” Clara announced as she turned off the headlights and parked the car under a canopy of trees. “From here, we go on foot.”

My breathing was heavy as we exited the car and moved through the darkness. The air was damp and cold, and every sound seemed amplified in the still night. Clara led the way, the iron poker strapped to her side, while Evelyn carried a backpack with the communication devices.

“This is it,” Clara whispered, stopping near a tall fence. She pulled a pair of wire cutters from the bag and began cutting through one of the links. “Quick and quiet,” she murmured as she worked with precision.

We slipped through the fence undetected and moved across the grounds toward a secondary entrance. Clara seemed to know the layout well, guiding us through paths that avoided visible security cameras.

“They won’t notice the system is offline for a few minutes,” Evelyn whispered, checking her laptop. “But we need to move fast.”

When we finally reached the building housing the safe, Clara stopped to survey the area. “Wait here,” she ordered. “I’ll check if it’s clear.”

I was about to protest, but the look she gave me silenced any argument. Clara slipped inside quickly, leaving Evelyn and me at the entrance, our hearts pounding.

“She knows what she’s doing,” Evelyn said, as if trying to reassure both of us.

“I know,” I replied, though the knot in my stomach suggested otherwise.

A few minutes later, Clara returned, motioning for us to follow. “The room is empty, but we don’t have much time.”

We entered the building and followed her to a small office in the back, where the safe was embedded in the wall. Clara began working on the electronic panel beside it, typing in a seemingly endless series of codes.

“Where did you get this?” I asked, watching her work.

“Let’s just say Richard isn’t as careful as he thinks,” Clara replied, a faint smile crossing her lips.

Finally, the safe opened with a click, revealing stacks of folders, storage devices, and papers. Clara grabbed as much as she could carry, passing items to Evelyn and me.

“Is this enough?” I asked, my voice trembling with adrenaline.

“More than enough,” Clara replied. “Now, we need to get out of here.”

As we moved toward the exit, the sound of distant voices froze us in our tracks. Clara gestured for silence, pressing herself against the wall as the footsteps grew closer.

“There’s someone here,” one of the voices said, full of suspicion. “Check the back room.”

My heart raced as I looked at Clara, whose expression was a mix of focus and determination. “We’re going out the way we came,” she whispered.

We started moving again, but the footsteps got louder. Before we could reach the exit, a flashlight beam cut through the darkness, revealing one of Richard’s guards.

“Hey!” he shouted, reaching for the radio on his shoulder.

Clara acted without hesitation, lunging forward to disarm him before he could call for reinforcements. The struggle was quick, but the sound of the scuffle attracted more footsteps heading our way.

“Run!” Clara commanded, her voice cutting through the chaos. Without a second thought, Evelyn and I bolted into the darkness, Clara close behind, as the shouts of Richard’s men echoed through the night.
