The silence after Clara’s bold declaration was deafening. Evelyn and I huddled in the bedroom, my breath shallow as I strained to hear any sound from outside. Clara’s voice still echoed in my ears, firm and unyielding: “If you want something, you’ll have to go through me.”

Evelyn paced the small space, clutching the papers she had brought. Her nervous energy mirrored the storm brewing in my chest. “We shouldn’t have let her go out there alone,” she whispered, her voice shaking. “What if something happens?”

“She told us to stay,” I replied, though my own voice trembled. “Clara can handle this. She always does.”

Evelyn shot me a skeptical look but didn’t argue. We both knew she was right to question it. Clara was strong, but the men outside weren’t here for a friendly chat. They were Richard’s people, and they wouldn’t stop until they got what they wanted.

The minutes dragged on like hours. My hands clenched into fists as I imagined all the things that could be happening on the other side of the door. Finally, unable to sit still any longer, I crept toward the window. Carefully pulling the curtain aside, I peered out into the night.

Clara stood in the driveway, her silhouette illuminated by the faint glow of the moon. She held the iron poker at her side, her stance defensive but calm. Two men stood a few feet away, their postures casual but their intentions anything but harmless.

One of them, the taller of the two, took a step forward. His voice carried faintly through the cool night air. “We’re not here to hurt anyone, Clara. We just need to talk to Bela.”

“She’s not coming out,” Clara replied, her tone ice-cold. “If you have something to say, you can say it to me.”

“That’s not how this works,” the shorter man said, crossing his arms. “Richard wants to see her. Now.”

Clara took a step forward, raising the poker slightly. “Well, you can tell Richard that Bela isn’t his puppet. And neither am I.”

The taller man let out a sharp laugh. “You’re brave, I’ll give you that. But bravery won’t stop Richard from getting what he wants.”

“Neither will threats,” Clara shot back, her voice unwavering. “Now, get off this property before I make you.”

The shorter man glanced at his partner, then back at Clara. “You really think you can stop us?”

Clara didn’t answer. Instead, she shifted her stance, clearly ready for anything. The tension in the air was electric, and I could feel my pulse quickening as I watched.

Just as the situation seemed ready to explode, a loud car horn blared from down the road. All three of them turned toward the noise, momentarily distracted. A black SUV sped past the driveway, its headlights cutting through the darkness before disappearing into the distance.

The taller man swore under his breath. “Let’s go,” he said to his partner. “We’ve made our point.”

The shorter man hesitated, glaring at Clara one last time before nodding. Without another word, they turned and walked back to their car. Clara stood her ground, watching them until they drove off.

I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding as Clara turned and walked back to the cabin. A moment later, the door creaked open, and she stepped inside, her face a mask of calm.

“They’re gone,” she announced, setting the poker against the wall.

Evelyn rushed forward. “For now,” she said, her voice edged with panic. “But they’ll be back. You know they will.”

“I know,” Clara admitted, running a hand through her hair. “That’s why we need to be ready.”

She turned to me, her expression softening slightly. “Are you okay?”

I nodded, though my legs felt like jelly. “I was so scared,” I admitted. “What if they had hurt you?”

Clara stepped closer, placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder. “I wouldn’t let that happen. Not to me, and definitely not to you.”

Her words were like a balm, but the fear still lingered. “What are we going to do now?”

Clara sat us all down at the kitchen table, her tone calm but firm. “We can’t keep reacting to Richard’s moves. We need to take the initiative.”

Evelyn frowned. “What do you mean? Go after him?”

“Exactly,” Clara said, her eyes blazing with determination. “We have enough evidence to start building a case against him. If we can expose what he’s been doing—his illegal accounts, his manipulations—we can cut off his power.”

“That’s risky,” Evelyn said, glancing at me. “If Richard finds out, he won’t just sit back and let it happen.”

“I don’t care,” I said, surprising myself with the strength in my voice. “He’s been trying to control my life for too long. It’s time to fight back.”

Clara smiled, a flicker of pride crossing her face. “Then we do this together. But carefully. Richard is dangerous, and we can’t afford to make mistakes.”

After the plan was laid out, Clara turned to me. “You should get some rest,” she said softly. “You’ve been through a lot tonight.”

“I’m not sure I can sleep,” I admitted. “Every time I close my eyes, I see those men—or worse, Richard.”

Clara hesitated for a moment before speaking. “Would it help if I stayed with you? Just until you fall asleep.”

I looked at her, the offer catching me off guard. “You’d do that?”

“Of course,” she said, her voice gentle. “I’ll stay as long as you need.”

We went upstairs together, and I settled into bed while Clara sat in the chair by the window. Her presence was comforting, a reminder that I wasn’t alone in this fight.

As the minutes ticked by, my breathing began to slow, the weight of the night finally giving way to exhaustion. Just before I drifted off, I whispered, “Thank you, Clara. For everything.”

Her reply was quiet, but filled with warmth. “Always.”

The peace was short-lived. A few hours later, I woke to the sound of glass shattering downstairs. My heart leapt into my throat as Clara shot to her feet, her body tense and alert.

“Stay here,” she ordered, her voice sharp. “Don’t move.”

Before I could protest, she was gone, leaving me alone in the dark with the growing sense that the danger wasn’t over yet.
