The ride back to the cabin was silent, the envelope clutched tightly in my hands. The cryptic message inside swirled in my mind like a storm, stirring up both fear and curiosity. Clara kept her eyes on the road, her jaw tight and her knuckles white as she gripped the steering wheel.

“The truth is closer than you think,” I murmured, rereading the note for the hundredth time. “What does that even mean?”

Clara glanced at me briefly, her expression unreadable. “I don’t know, Bela. But whoever left that note knows more than they’re letting on.”

“Do you think it was Evelyn?” I asked, though the answer felt obvious.

“She had to have been the one,” Clara replied. “No one else knew we were going to see her.”

I nodded, sinking back into my seat. My thoughts raced, piecing together fragments of what I knew about my mother’s life. Secrets, hidden truths, a choice that changed everything—it all felt like a puzzle missing a critical piece.

When we arrived back at the cabin, the atmosphere felt heavier. Clara disappeared into the kitchen, mumbling something about needing tea, while I sat at the dining table, staring at the journal and the note. The room was quiet except for the faint clinking of cups and spoons as Clara busied herself.

My hands trembled as I opened the journal again, flipping to the pages Evelyn had directed us toward. I wanted to believe I was ready for whatever I might find, but the growing pit in my stomach suggested otherwise.

December 12, 2002

Evelyn confronted me today. She doesn’t agree with the choice I made, and I can’t blame her. But this is my life, my decision, and I have to do what I think is right for Bela. I hope she understands someday, even if it means she’ll never know the full truth.

The entry was short, but it left me reeling. Evelyn had been involved in whatever decision my mother had made. She had objected, yet she’d kept the secret.

“What is it?” Clara’s voice broke through my thoughts as she placed a mug of tea in front of me.

“Evelyn knew,” I said, my voice shaking. “She knew about my mother’s choice, and she didn’t agree with it.”

Clara sat down across from me, her face tense. “That means Evelyn might be holding back more than she let on.”

I nodded, my heart pounding. “We need to find out what she’s hiding.”

Clara and I sat by the fire, the journal resting between us. The flickering flames cast shadows across her face, highlighting the worry etched in her features. I couldn’t stop thinking about the note. If the truth was closer than I thought, what was I missing?

“You’re quiet,” Clara said, breaking the silence.

“Just thinking,” I replied, my voice distant.

“About your mom?”

“About everything,” I admitted. “My mom, Evelyn, the note... us.”

Clara shifted slightly, her gaze dropping to the journal. “What about us?”

I hesitated, unsure if I should speak what was on my mind. But the tension between us had been building all day, and I couldn’t keep it bottled up any longer. “I just... I feel like we’re caught in the middle of something bigger than either of us. And I don’t know where we stand.”

Clara looked up, her eyes locking with mine. “We stand together, Bela,” she said firmly. “No matter what we find out, no matter what happens, I’m not going anywhere.”

Her words wrapped around me like a blanket, soothing the raw edges of my emotions. “I don’t want you to go anywhere,” I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper.

Clara leaned forward, her hand resting gently on mine. The firelight danced in her eyes, and for a moment, the weight of everything else faded away. “I’m here,” she said softly.

I didn’t think. I just acted, closing the space between us and pressing my lips to hers. The kiss was tentative at first, but it deepened quickly, the emotions we’d been holding back finally breaking free.

Her hands cupped my face, and I felt her let go of some of the restraint she’d been carrying. It wasn’t just a kiss—it was a promise, an acknowledgment of everything unspoken between us.

When we finally pulled apart, both of us were breathless. Clara rested her forehead against mine, her hands still on my face. “This changes everything,” she murmured.

“Maybe it changes everything,” I replied, “but it feels like it’s exactly where we’re meant to be.”

Clara smiled, a small, genuine smile that melted the tension in my chest. “You always have a way of making things seem simple.”

“Maybe because it is simple,” I said, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “It’s us. That’s all that matters.”
