Chapter 313 The Deep Thoughts About Scarlett
Chapter 313 The Deep Thoughts About Scarlett
Scarlett remained oblivious to Ambrose’s burning gaze. Her mind was still caught up in the surprise of Ulysses suddenly serving her food. Seeing she couldn't refuse, she accepted the food he'd put on her plate with the shared utensils.
"Don't be too polite, or we won't be able to eat in peace," she added at the end.
Ulysses offered a thin smile. "Fair enough. Please, enjoy."
As he set down his cutlery, his eyes drifted casually toward Ambrose, only to find Ambrose staring right back at him.
Those eyes looked like they were about to shoot fire!
Ulysses suddenly fell in a great mood, and the rest of his meal tasted better than usual.
Scarlett kept her head down, quietly enjoying the delicious food. She was really hungry, and all these dishes were made to her taste.
"About your dad's situation, maybe I can help you out too. I know Indigo has evidence, but he's hidden it well. I'll need some time to find it." Ulysses suddenly brought it up. Scarlett froze and looked up at him in shock.
Was he trying to trick her?
Meeting the doubt in her eyes, Ulysses said sincerely, "I'm not just saying this casually. I'll give it a try."
Scarlett had thought about clearing Owen's name but didn't know where to start. Now that Ulysses suddenly said Indigo had evidence, hope sparked in her heart.
"The evidence truly exists?" she asked, her eyes widening.
Ulysses's eyes, without his glasses, met her gaze with a calm, disciplined intensity.
"I’ve heard enough to be certain, though I need to dig deeper into the specifics." Ulysses's expression didn't change.
Despite the rush of excitement, Scarlett maintained her composure. She pressed her lips together, weighing the gravity of his offer. This was no minor favor; it was a pursuit that could prove fatal. How could she accept such a risk on her behalf?
"Thank you. Whether or not the evidence is recovered, I am grateful. No one has ever helped me like this before."
Scarlett spoke from the bottom of her heart.
Ulysses sighed, a small smile playing on his lips. He wanted this—a chance to bridge the distance between them and bury the ghosts of their past.
"Think of it as making up for what I did before!"
"Whatever happened before has been settled by Octavia’s evidence and this new lead," Scarlett countered firmly. "You owe me nothing.
"As for the evidence you mentioned, it'll be really hard to get. Your uncle isn't easy to approach, and you've already had a falling out with him. If you try to get close to him, it'll be dangerous. I don't want you to be in danger because of this."
A warmth spread through Ulysses’s chest. He hadn't expected her to prioritize his well-being.
"I'm honored to hear your concern. Rest assured, I will be cautious."
Scarlett had laid her cards on the table, making the stakes clear. The choice, and the consequence, now rested entirely with him.
The atmosphere afterward was pleasant. Ulysses would say something occasionally, and Scarlett would respond. Though they remained tethered by politeness, the ability to share a meal without conflict felt like a hard-won victory.
"Are you done eating?" A cool, urging voice came from behind Scarlett.
She turned around and saw Ambrose looking unhappy. She knew he minded.
Ulysses looked up and glanced at him. "Mr. Boleyn, regardless of your haste, one should at least allow a lady to finish her dinner."
Afraid Ambrose would get worked up, Scarlett quickly intervened, "I'm full."
Turning back to Ulysses, she added, "Thank you for the meal. If there is any news, please contact me. I’ll be heading out now."
Ulysses recognized the shift. The fact that she had stayed to eat meant the needle of her opinion had moved in his favor. Now, the game was about consistency.
He needed to be more considerate than Ambrose, so she could compare and see who was better.
"Of course. Go if you must," Ulysses said, projecting an air of effortless generosity. "I will be in touch."
Scarlett smiled slightly, picked up the wet towel nearby to wipe her mouth, grabbed her bag, pushed back her chair to stand up, gave him a smile, and left with Ambrose.
Watching her leave, Ulysses's lips curved upward. Compared to Ambrose's pettiness, he would show more class.
After they walked out of the restaurant, Scarlett saw Ambrose ahead taking big strides. His angry figure was telling her he was mad.
"Why are you angry again?" she asked, catching up and tugging at his hand.
Ambrose gripped her hand tightly, glanced at her sideways, and said sarcastically. "I saw you seemed pretty happy eating with Ulysses."
"Did I? If I did, it's because I'm happy about getting the evidence." Scarlett smiled brightly, with a hint of trying to please him.
Ambrose couldn't stay angry anymore. He squeezed her soft hand hard.
"He really gave you evidence?"
Scarlett nodded. "I'll show you later. You didn't eat enough, right? I deliberately didn't eat too much so I could eat with you. Let's find a place to eat together."
This was her ultimate move to soothe an angry man.
Sure enough, Ambrose totally fell for it. His dark eyes looked at her, and the unhappiness in his heart mostly disappeared. He held her hand and walked toward the alley behind the restaurant.
He took her to a private restaurant he often went to, which happened to be behind this restaurant.
Sitting in the private room of the restaurant, Scarlett excitedly took out a box from her bag, opened it, and pulled out a USB drive, waving it.
"The evidence is on this USB drive."
Then she handed it to Ambrose, and then picked up a key. "This is the key to a locker at the dock. Inside is evidence of crimes committed by people around Indigo."
After Ambrose took the USB drive, without a word, he pulled out a palm-sized tablet from his pocket and plugged in the USB drive.
After he opened what was inside and looked at the content, he thought for a moment.
"This evidence is very useful. Looks like Ulysses really spent a lot of time on this." Ambrose said.
His fingers moved across the tablet, copying the files.
Scarlett didn't know what the content was. After Ambrose finished copying, she reached out to take it and looked at it.
She felt certain—this would be enough to send Indigo to prison.
After Ambrose handed the USB drive back to her, she told him about the evidence that might clear Owen's name.
"Ulysses said Indigo is keeping evidence of framing my dad. He plans to get close to Indigo to find the evidence."
Ambrose frowned. "He said that?"
Scarlett nodded. "Even though we don't know if he'll succeed, the fact that he said this means the evidence exists. We can search in that direction. We'll find it eventually."
Ambrose lowered his eyes. Ulysses was really persistent, taking on something with a ninety percent danger level.
He wasn't even asking for the Mitchell Group. His feelings for Scarlett ran really deep.
After this topic, Ambrose became rather quiet, so when the food arrived, Scarlett served him.
"If he’s willing to help, we should let him. It’s better to have an ally than an enemy, right?" she suggested.
"When the time comes, we can hand over the Mitchell Group to him as payment. That settles the debt. Even if he refuses, we’ll make it his responsibility."
After Scarlett finished speaking, Ambrose finally looked up and glanced at her.
"That's what I was thinking too."
Scarlett smiled. Looks like she'd guessed his thoughts correctly.
Only then did he let out that breath. Afterward at the table, he kept serving Scarlett food, piling her bowl full.
"Eat your own food. I can serve myself. You're giving me so much, I can't finish it all!"
She stared at the food in her bowl, looking annoyed.
But Ambrose said sarcastically, "When I serve you, it’s a complaint, yet when someone else serves you, you accept it with a smile. Tell me—does my food taste so much worse than his?"
