Chapter 306 Covert Proposal
Chapter 306 Covert Proposal
"Did Ulysses ask you for anything?" Scarlett asked.
Ambrose put down his pen. "He didn't ask, but I gave him something anyway. I don't like owing favors."
Scarlett was well aware that without some kind of repayment, Ulysses would use his help as leverage to keep her in his debt. Given Ambrose's jealous nature, how could he agree to that?
"What did you give him?"
"I'm giving him the Mitchell Group," Ambrose said.
Scarlett froze. Giving him the Mitchell Group?
Did this mean he was planning to acquire the Mitchell Group? That was quite a big return.
"Ambrose, won't this cause you trouble? Taking over the Mitchell Group isn't something you can just say casually. The Mitchell Group isn't a small company. Even though it's been hit hard by Ulysses's situation, it's still a large enterprise."
Scarlett was still worried. Ambrose smiled. "What trouble? Your business is my business. Besides, acquiring the Mitchell Group was already in my plans. It just happened to coincide with this timing."
Scarlett watched him for a long moment before finally relenting, just as he began to speak.
"Scarlett, if you feel bad about it, then marry into the Boleyn Family, and you won't have any psychological burden at all."
The abrupt shift in conversation caught Scarlett off guard; it took her a moment to process that this was his indirect way of asking her to marry him.
Marriage was the furthest thing from her mind; she wasn't even close to being in the right headspace for that kind of commitment.
But how could she tell him? If she rejected him on the spot, would he feel hurt?
Ambrose noticed her quietness and realized he’d rattled her. Unfazed, he simply let out a sigh and offered a small smile before speaking.
"I'm just joking, don't take it to heart. I'll go with whatever you want. If you want to get married, we'll get married. If you don't, this is fine too."
Scarlett felt a wave of relief wash over her. She had no interest in jumping back into a commitment so soon, especially since she had only just managed to escape her previous marriage.
Scarlett approached him, and as he swiveled his chair around, Ambrose pulled her close, wrapping his arms around her waist. She leaned into him, resting in his embrace as she spoke in a soft voice.
"Ambrose, I'm very grateful for everything you've done for me, but I'm not considering marriage right now."
Getting a definite answer, Ambrose nodded. "I understand, don't feel pressured. I've handled things with Ulysses, you don't need to worry."
It was for the best that Ulysses was willing to deal with Ambrose directly. This way, she could stay out of it entirely, ensuring she wouldn't end up owing Ulysses any favors.
Even though Ulysses had made his feelings for her clear, she was unable to return them and knew she never would.
This was for the best.
"Who are you giving this evidence to?" She suddenly asked.
Ambrose looked down at her. "Did your dad say who to give these things to?"
"My dad said to give them to Mr. Philip. He would know who's most suitable to give them to, and they won't get suppressed."
Ambrose nodded, understanding. "I'll touch base with Vaughn first, have him prepare on his end."
"Okay."
Hearing all this, Scarlett's heart finally settled. This way, Indigo could finally be investigated.
Leaving Ambrose's office, Scarlett made her way to the company cafeteria. Since Ambrose had a business lunch scheduled, she was heading down to eat by herself.
After picking up her meal, she tucked herself away in a quiet corner. She had only just started eating when Bodhi appeared, tray in hand, and took a seat close by.
"Scarlett, you're only eating this much?"
Scarlett glanced at Bodhi and said flatly, "Didn't you say you were going to Oakridge? Why are you still here?"
Bodhi looked a bit embarrassed.
"Scarlett, I really arranged for Felicity to go to Celestial University's anniversary celebration for both your sakes. Look, you two made up now, didn't you? You two should be thanking me."
Scarlett looked at him steadily and questioned, "You really did it for our sake?"
Bodhi immediately raised his hands in surrender. "You don't believe anything I say anymore. I'd better say less."
Scarlett looked away and continued eating, ignoring Bodhi.
Her connection with Ambrose used to be a bit of a gray area, but now the dynamic between them had shifted into something much more definite. Plus, knowing how complicated the relationships in the Boleyn Family were, she had become more suspicious of the Boleyn Family members. And Bodhi gave her a strange feeling.
Despite his easygoing act, he left her with an unsettling feeling. She couldn't pinpoint exactly what was off, but she was certain this carefree persona was just a mask for his true nature.
Without proof, she could only be more careful and keep her distance from him.
In the middle of their lunch, Bodhi brought up Hayden again, mentioning it had been days since they last met and that he truly missed him.
At the mention of Hayden, Scarlett looked up at him.
"Hayden told me you weren't very nice to him before. You're an adult being unfriendly to a little kid, are you jealous of him?"
Bodhi laughed. "Scarlett, don't listen to Hayden's nonsense. Before, I gave him whatever he wanted."
Scarlett let out a skeptical scoff, clearly not buying it, but she chose to keep the rest of her thoughts to herself.
While she was still eating, Scarlett received a call from the construction site. The foreman explained that the project had hit a snag and insisted she come down to deal with it in person.
Scarlett hurriedly finished eating, quickly got up and left the cafeteria, returned to her office, grabbed her bag and left the company.
It was the middle of the day, and the August heat in Silverlight City was brutal. Walking outside felt like being stepped into an oven, with the sweltering air making it feel as if you were being roasted alive.
The Cullinan raced toward the site with Xander at the wheel. Although the interior was perfectly cooled, Scarlett remained tense and uneasy.
How could something go wrong at the construction site out of nowhere?
When they arrived, as soon as Scarlett got out of the car, a wave of heat hit her face. Though uncomfortable, she still quickly walked toward the site office.
"Ms. Mellon, use a parasol!" Xander reminded her.
Scarlett waved her hand. "It's fine, it's just a few steps."
As she stepped into the office, the blast of air conditioning cut through the sweltering heat so sharply that she couldn't help but shiver.
In the site office, everyone was eating lunch. Seeing her arrive, they all stood up to offer their seats.
"It's okay, you all eat. I'll just see what's going on."
The person in charge had already finished eating and came over to explain the situation to Scarlett. It was another issue with an arc - her design drawings differed greatly from the actual construction, and they couldn't achieve the desired effect.
Scarlett said she wanted to see the site. Even though it was the hottest time of day, they went anyway.
They rode the lift platform up to the specific spot. Scarlett spent some time observing the structure before taking measurements with a ruler, recording the data, and cross-checking it against her blueprints.
After thinking it over, she had some ideas and explained them to the person in charge on the spot.
Once the person in charge understood, Scarlett wrote down all the measurements.
After solving the problem, they prepared to go down. As they walked, Scarlett and the person in charge were still discussing.
As the lift platform shuddered, a sudden, jarring noise tore through the air, and it began to plummet. Debris and metal poles rained down in the chaos, with several striking Scarlett as the platform fell.
All four people in the lift were hit by poles, wooden sticks and the like. The platform finally crashed heavily to the bottom level.
All four of them passed out on the spot.
