Chapter 8

Chapter 8

"You! How dare you speak to me like that! Do you believe I'll fire you!"

Mia was shaking with rage.

She wanted to rush up and scratch my face with her manicured nails, but then she glanced at the Glacier Corp building behind me and held back.

I didn't want to get tangled up with her any longer, so I turned and left.

My boss now was Brian, not Mia.

I went back to DT Corp to report to Brian about the contract progress.

Before I could speak, Brian said first, "Yesterday I arranged for someone to go to Glacier Corp for you, but my dad stopped them."

He pointed upward.

I didn't expect Brian to explain this to me on his own. I nodded gently. "It's okay, I understand. Thank you, Mr. Ethan."

After working with Brian for a year, I had some understanding of his situation.

Brian was the general manager of DT Corp, but his father, Terry Ethan, was the one who actually held the power. Usually, Terry didn't get involved in DT Corp's management. But whenever Terry gave an order, Brian had no choice.

Brian squinted at me for a moment and asked, "Have you upset Mia recently?"

I hadn't planned to say much, but since Brian asked, I answered honestly, "When I came out of Glacier Corp today, I ran into Miss Ethan, and we had a bit of an argument."

Thinking about how Mia said she would fire me, I couldn't help but worry.

This high-paying job was very important. I couldn't lose it.

I took a deep breath and said, "Mr. Ethan, I can explain this."

But Brian said, "No need. You've been by my side for so long, I know you."

Brian waved his hand and said, "Don't worry about Mia. Right now, she can't make company decisions on her own yet."

With Brian's words, my anxious heart finally settled down.

After thanking him again, I left Brian's office.

Back at my desk, excited chatter from my colleagues flooded my ears.

"Shocking news! Miss Ethan has been arrested!"

My hands paused while organizing documents.

"Really? Was she arrested by the police?"

"Yes, taken away by the police!"

"I heard from my friend that Miss Ethan kept asking Mr. Cooper to dinner and was repeatedly rejected. She finally couldn't take it anymore and made a high-profile confession to Mr. Cooper downstairs at the Glacier Corp building!"

"What does that have to do with being arrested?"

The person speaking got even more excited.

"Of course it's related! Not only did Mr. Cooper not come down to look, he directly called the police and had Miss Ethan arrested for disturbing public order!"

As soon as these words came out, voices rose all around.

Everyone in Seaside City knew that Jason was ruthless and cold-hearted.

But no one expected him to be so harsh as to directly call the police and have her arrested!

Now Mia had really lost face.

I let out a gentle breath, feeling much more relaxed.

Jason must be afraid of being misunderstood by another woman.

After all, people inside Glacier Corp weren't even allowed to gossip about Jason.

Now that Mia had publicly confessed to him in such a high-profile way, he naturally had to deal with it.

He really cared about the woman he liked.

I was able to leave work on time today. I packed up my things and left.

At the roadside, Brian's car slowly stopped. He rolled down the window and said, "Get in, I'll give you a ride home."

I stood still and politely declined with a smile, "That's too much trouble for you. I can get home on my own."

"Come on." Brian said, "You still need to pick up Jessica from school, right? Don't keep her waiting."

I couldn't refuse anymore.

Thinking about Jessica waiting for me at the school gate made me anxious.

I stopped being polite, opened the car door, got in, and said, "Thank you."

Brian replied, "Don't mention it."

The moment the car started moving, through the rearview mirror, I saw a black Alphard quietly parked behind us.

I only glanced at it once before looking away.

We arrived at the kindergarten early today. The moment Jessica saw me, her eyes lit up instantly.

"Mommy!" She cheered and rushed over happily.

I squatted down, scooped up Jessica in my arms, spun around in a circle, and then put her down amid her joyful laughter.

"Let's go home."

Looking at Jessica's cute, bright smile, all the day's work fatigue melted away.

I held her soft little hand and walked home while gently asking, "Did anything interesting happen at school today?"

"Yes! The teacher had us play a new game today!" Jessica gestured animatedly as she described it to me.

Jessica shared with me the whole way, happy as a little sparrow.

Finally, Jessica blinked and looked at me expectantly, asking, "Mommy, the sports day is in a few days. Daddy will definitely come, right?"

She rarely asked me to confirm things repeatedly like this.

Thinking of Jason, my heart ached, but I still smiled and squatted down to pat her head. "Of course, when has Mommy ever lied to you?"

"Yay! I'll be a happy baby with a daddy too!"

Looking at Jessica's bright, expectant smile, my heart grew increasingly bitter.

Back at Golden River Apartments, Lily had already prepared dinner.

After dinner, Jessica played with toys in the living room while Lily and I cleaned up in the kitchen.

"I'm planning to look at used cars. That way it'll be convenient for both work and taking Jessica to school." I said calmly while washing dishes.

"A used car? Your salary isn't low now. Even buying a new car wouldn't be a problem." Lily turned to look at me in surprise.

I knew that a new car would definitely be better than a used one. But Jessica would be starting elementary school soon, and I wanted to save money to send her to a better school. A car was just for transportation. I could make do.

I explained, "I want to save money to get Jessica into a good elementary school."

Lily nodded.

She thought for a moment and clapped her hands. "How about this? I'll ask my readers and fans to see if they have any information about used car sales."

A grateful smile appeared on my face. "Thank you. Having you is my greatest fortune."

Lily had taken me in when I was pregnant before, and had helped me again and again since then.

Jessica got tired of playing. I helped her wash up and got her into bed, then read a fairy tale softly.

Under the dim yellow night light, Jessica gradually fell asleep.

Looking at her sweet, peaceful sleeping face, my heart felt tender.

I tiptoed out of the room, and my phone vibrated.

It was a call from an unknown number.

"Hello?" After I answered, there was no sound from the other end for a long time.

I looked at my phone again and again, confirming the call was still connected.

After waiting a while, when the other person still didn't make a sound, I hung up in confusion.

Probably a wrong number.

I didn't expect Lily to be so efficient. The next day, she excitedly told me, "Sue, we're so lucky! There's a big used car sale exhibition in Seaside City today! We can go try our luck!"

My eyes lit up. "It's Saturday anyway. Let's take Jessica with us."

It was Jessica's first time at an exhibition, and she excitedly turned her head to look around.

I held her hand, equally unable to hide my joy.

But the next moment, I froze and stopped in my tracks.

It was Jason. What was he doing here?!
