Chapter 6
The first thing that caught my eye was a pair of custom-made, thin-soled men's dress shoes.
Following the straight, slender pant legs upward, past the man's inverted triangle physique, my gaze finally landed on that cold, distant, handsome face.
Jason stood beside me, looking down at me from above, his voice cold and mocking, "Is this DT's idea of professional cooperation? Do you need me to bring you a bed?"
I'd been waiting here for several hours, but Jason never showed up. Not until I could barely wait any longer did he finally walk in, and the first thing he did was mock me.
He was deliberately picking a fight.
Jason just couldn't stand the sight of me.
A bitter feeling rose in my heart.
But considering how I treated him before, it was a miracle he hadn't just thrown me out.
Thinking of the high salary Brian was paying Jessica and me, I could only endure Jason's mockery.
"I'm terribly sorry, Mr. Cooper. This is my fault."
I quickly stood up from the sofa, head lowered, awkwardly smoothing out my wrinkled clothes from sleeping.
Jason brushed past me and sat down in his chair, legs crossed, hands clasped in front of him.
He narrowed his eyes, his gaze harsh and critical as it swept up and down over me.
I felt nervous, unconsciously gripping the hem of my clothes.
The atmosphere grew increasingly tense in the silence.
Just as I was about to ask about the contract, Jason suddenly spoke, "Were you with Brian last night?"
I froze, not quite understanding why he would say that.
I was exhausted because I'd spent so much time last night comforting my child.
I'd worked hard to raise Jessica well.
Though Jessica appeared sunny and lively, she was actually a sensitive little girl.
Growing up without a father made Jessica far more sensitive than most children.
I could only spend more time and energy with her.
But I was willing to do all of this.
Every time I saw Jessica's bright smile, all my exhaustion would vanish.
Seeing I didn't answer, Jason said, "Where's the contract?"
I snapped back to attention, placing the documents in front of Jason with both hands, then stood properly. "Mr. Cooper, according to your requirements, we've revised the contract."
Jason's long, well-defined fingers flipped rapidly through the documents.
His brow furrowed more and more, his expression growing increasingly unpleasant.
I couldn't help feeling nervous.
"Full of holes. A complete mess."
Each word Jason spoke hit my heart like a hammer.
He said coldly, "If this is DT Corp's capability, don't bother coming back."
My face went pale. Under Jason's cold gaze, my body tensed involuntarily.
Meeting Jason's eyes, I felt a moment of disorientation.
He had never looked at me this way before.
"I'm very sorry..." I bowed deeply to Jason, my tone extremely sincere. "Mr. Cooper, we really want to work with you. If there are any problems, please tell me. DT Corp will fully cooperate with revisions."
Jason looked at me deeply.
I couldn't quite read the meaning in his eyes.
But since Jason hadn't directly kicked me out, I had to keep trying.
This high-paying job was very important to me.
I couldn't lose it.
Jason stared at me, then pointed out my problems in an icy tone.
The issues he raised were sharp and hit the nail on the head.
By the time I'd answered all his questions, I was drenched in sweat.
"Fix these problems, then we'll talk." Jason dropped his final words.
I quickly nodded in agreement, "Yes, Mr. Cooper. We'll do our best to revise according to your requirements."
With that, I turned to leave.
"Stop."
Jason's voice was light, yet it pressed on my heart like a boulder.
My whole body stiffened. I slowly raised my eyes and caught sight of Jason's anger-filled gaze.
"You're in such a hurry to leave?"
All the issues had been discussed, so of course, I was eager to go back and revise.
Brian valued this contract highly. If it failed because of me, I'd lose my job too.
I kept my head down, avoiding Jason's eyes, and said, "DT Corp will respond immediately to the issues Mr. Cooper raised, revising as quickly as possible while maintaining quality."
I couldn't see Jason's expression, but I could hear his fingers tapping the desk deliberately.
Each tap made me panic.
"Repeat the problems I just mentioned," Jason ordered flatly.
I couldn't figure out what Jason was thinking, but to get him to agree to cooperate, I had no choice but to speak.
But just as I began, Jason interrupted with a cold laugh, "Wrong from the start. Is this your work attitude? If you can't do your job properly, you might as well stay home and be a rich wife. Didn't you marry a wealthy man?"
He was still blaming me for leaving him back then.
I clenched my fists.
The point I just mentioned was exactly what Jason had raised, just using different words, and he found fault with it.
But I wasn't a robot. There was no way I could repeat it word for word.
Jason had plenty of patience when it came to making things difficult for me.
Every sentence I spoke, he would frown and correct, and at the end, he wouldn't forget to jab at me.
For the contract to proceed smoothly, I could only endure it.
Knowing we had no future together, knowing he would resent and hate me, my heart still couldn't help but ache.
Two hours passed before Jason finally let me go, saying, "That's enough. You wouldn't remember more anyway."
Samuel immediately pushed the door open and led me out.
I wasn't sure if it was my imagination, but I felt his gaze on me was rather subtle.
"Ms. Wilson, it seems Mr. Cooper takes DT Corp's cooperation very seriously. He's never spent this much time on a single contract."
All I could manage was a bitter smile.
Seriously?
Rather than taking it seriously, he was deliberately making things difficult for me...
But even so, I could only grit my teeth and continue working.
Samuel pressed the elevator button, and after we both entered, he looked at me through the elevator mirror, his expression complex, but he said nothing more.
After leaving Glacier Corp, I immediately returned to DT Corp.
When Brian saw the contract wasn't signed, he frowned and asked, "You just came back like this?"
"I'm sorry, Mr. Ethan..."
I told him about the issues Jason had raised.
Brian looked down, his gaze sweeping over me, and said, "I understand. You'll be responsible for revising the contract. This cooperation is very important to us. Let me know if you need anything."
I asked tentatively, "Mr. Ethan, after I finish revising the documents, could someone else deliver them?"
Brian furrowed his brow, his probing gaze sweeping over me as he asked, "Did he make things difficult for you?"
I pressed my lips together and lowered my eyes, about to say that it wasn't possible, then forget it.
For Jessica's sake, I could endure.
Before I could speak, Brian tapped his fingers lightly on the desk and said, "I'll consider it. Go revise the contract first."
"Alright, Mr. Ethan. Thank you."
I was under a lot of pressure.
I worked overtime at the company until the early morning hours before finishing the revisions according to Jason's requirements.
After placing the newly prepared documents on Brian's desk, I finally went home.
The next day, just after arriving at the company and before seeing Brian, I received word that I had to personally deliver the revised contract to Glacier Corp.
This order came from Mr. Ethan's father, and even Brian had no right to object.
I gripped the documents tightly and headed to Glacier Corp.
