Chapter 319
Chapter 319
"The foreman personally picked by Mr. Cooper - how could he be unreliable?"
Lily sighed and leaned over to stare at my belly:
"This little one is growing so fast. Have you been feeling..."
Before she could finish, the balcony door swung open.
Jason walked over carrying a plate of sliced kiwi, his eyes coldly sweeping over Lily:
"My wife needs her afternoon nap."
Lily felt her scalp tingle under his gaze. She laughed awkwardly and stood up:
"I just remembered there's still a bug in the script I need to fix. I'll head back to the office."
At the entrance, Lily turned back and winked at me, silently mouthing:
"What a jealous king!"
I held back my laughter as I watched Jason close the door.
"Why did you scare her like that?"
I picked up a piece of kiwi and popped it in my mouth:
"I get pretty bored at home by myself."
"The doctor said you need plenty of sleep during the second trimester."
Jason sat down beside me and pulled me into his arms:
"If you're bored, I'll move my desk home from now on."
I quickly shook my head. If Jason worked from home, I wouldn't even have the freedom to secretly play on my phone.
That evening, after my shower.
I leaned against the headboard as Jason came over with pregnancy oil.
Over these past months, this had become his routine.
He poured the oil into his palm, warmed it up, then lifted the hem of my pajama top.
His warm hand covered my rounded belly, gently massaging, careful not to disturb the baby inside.
"Did he give you any trouble today?"
He kept his head down, his voice soft.
"No, he's been good."
Just as I finished speaking, a little bump rose on my belly, right against Jason's palm.
Jason froze completely, his whole body going still.
He looked up at me excitedly, his eyes wide, his voice tight:
"He kicked me?"
This was the baby's first really obvious movement.
I was amazed too, looking down at my belly.
The little bump quickly receded, then gently rose again nearby.
Jason even lightened his breathing.
He carefully poked that spot with his finger, a suspicious redness appearing in his eyes.
"Honey."
Jason suddenly leaned in, cupped my face, and kissed me hard.
This kiss carried no desire, only pure excitement and cherishing.
"Thank you."
Jason pressed his forehead against mine, his voice hoarse.
I stroked his hair, my heart soft.
After his emotions settled, Jason pulled out a thick book from somewhere and started flipping through it enthusiastically.
"We should start thinking about the baby's name."
He grabbed the pen and paper from the bedside table and started writing.
I leaned over for a look - the paper already had a long list of names.
Opal, Kenna, Briar, Elowen...
The more I looked, the more something seemed off.
"Jason."
I pointed at the paper:
"Why are all these girl names?"
Jason glanced up at me, then looked back down:
"Of course it's a girl - she'll look like you, with big eyes, wearing pretty little dresses every day. How wonderful."
A faint smile played on my lips:
"But what if it's a boy?"
Jason's pen paused.
He looked up, his brow furrowing as if considering a serious problem.
After a long moment, he coldly uttered a few words:
"If it's a son, we'll just call him Jack. Boys shouldn't be spoiled."
I snatched the pen from his hand:
"If you dare name him Jack, I'll take him and leave! Hurry up and think of some normal boy names as backup!"
Under my threat, Jason very halfheartedly scribbled a few words in the corner of the paper: Nolan, Mason.
As soon as he finished writing, he tossed the paper aside and pulled me down to lie with him:
"There, backup names done. Time to sleep."
I looked at those two lonely boy names, silently worrying for the baby in my belly whose gender we didn't even know yet.
The next day, close to noon.
The doorbell rang frantically.
Lila went to answer it, and immediately, a commotion came from inside.
I had just walked out of the bedroom when I saw Tamsin standing in the middle of the living room, leaning on her cane but looking energetic.
Behind her was a chubby man in a chef's uniform, carrying two huge insulated containers.
"Grandma?"
I was a bit surprised:
"What brings you here?"
"To see you, of course!"
Tamsin quickly walked over, grabbed my hand and looked me up and down:
"How come you haven't gained any weight? Is Jason not taking good care of you?"
I quickly explained:
"No, no, the doctor said my weight is well controlled and the baby is very healthy."
Tamsin snorted and turned to point at the chubby chef:
"This is Wesley, a head nutritionist chef I found from a three-Michelin-star restaurant. From now on, he'll be in charge of all your meals."
Wesley stepped forward and bowed respectfully:
"Hello, today's lunch menu is..."
"Alright, alright, stop listing dishes and get to the kitchen!"
Tamsin waved her hand:
"Don't let Sue go hungry!"
Wesley responded and carried the containers into the kitchen.
Tamsin patted the back of my hand:
"Sue, you sit down and rest. I'm going to check on the kitchen."
I wanted to stop Tamsin, but she had already hurried into the kitchen.
I shook my head helplessly and went downstairs to sit on the sofa.
Less than ten minutes later, Tamsin's vigorous voice came from the kitchen.
"Wesley! Your knife skills are terrible! These ginger strips are cut like matchsticks - how is Sue supposed to enjoy eating this?"
"The oil is too hot! You're destroying the nutrients in the ingredients! Did you buy your three-Michelin-star chef position?"
I curiously walked to the kitchen doorway.
As soon as I peeked in, I saw Wesley standing to the side, sweating profusely and looking meek, while Tamsin had grabbed the spatula right out of his hands.
"Move aside! Watch me do it!"
Tamsin rolled up her sleeves and skillfully tied on an apron:
"Back in the day, my husband loved my cooking the most. Today I'm cooking myself!"
Wesley stood to the side, wanting to intervene but not daring to, anxiously wringing his hands.
I watched this chaotic scene, not knowing whether to laugh or cry.
I didn't know Tamsin could cook.
But wasn't this a bit inappropriate?
Just as I was hesitating about how to persuade Tamsin.
Jason happened to come home. He strode over, looked at the chaotic kitchen scene, and raised an eyebrow.
"Grandma, are you trying to blow up my kitchen?"
Jason walked over quickly, supporting Tamsin's arm with one hand.
"Grandma, the way you're going at it, people would think you're trying to demolish the place."
Tamsin glared at him and shoved the spatula into his hand:
"What do you know! Sue is eating for two now - how can outside chefs be as caring as family?"
Jason handed the spatula to the trembling Wesley beside him:
"Wesley is a professional. You go to the living room and watch TV with Sue. There's too much smoke in the kitchen."
Jason finally managed to coax Tamsin out of the kitchen.
Wesley wiped his sweat and hurried to cook.
I leaned against the doorframe, smiling.
Jason walked over and pinched my cheek:
"Still laughing? Next time Grandma wants to cook, call me right away."
