"Sue! Did you come here on purpose to watch me make a fool of myself?"
Luke gritted his teeth and strode toward me angrily,
"How can you be so mean? You must be really happy seeing me in such a mess, right? Tricking Mom into signing, finding some random job to mess with me - how could you do something like this?"
I looked at him, surprised.
"Isn't this a job? If you don't want to do it, you can quit."
At that, Luke's face darkened even more.
Just as he was about to say something, the supervisor also hurried over.
The man greeted me politely, "Mrs. Cooper, I'm very sorry to interrupt your shopping."
I waved my hand, "It's fine, you can go now."
"Alright."

"This must be Jason's arrangement, right?"

I looked at Lily, "By the way, last time you told me you agreed to go home with Ryan to meet his parents. How did that go?"
Lily hesitated for a long while before speaking uncertainly, "Actually, I don't really know how it went. His parents were nice, and they were polite when we met, but I always felt this sense of distance, like when they treated me, they were just being proper, but they didn't really accept me as Ryan's girlfriend."
She spoke a bit vaguely, but I still understood.
I thought for a moment, "So you feel like they just treated you as Ryan's friend?"
"Exactly, like regular friends."
Lily scratched her hair, looking troubled.
I could understand her frustration.
There was already a big gap between their families, and it took a lot of courage for Lily to meet his parents.
To end up with this kind of result.
If it were me, I'd definitely feel disappointed too.
I patted her shoulder comfortingly and asked, "What about Ryan? What did he say?"
"He told me to relax, said there wouldn't be any problems, that his parents are just more reserved by nature, not that they're unhappy with me."

We looked at each other, falling into silence for a moment.

I looked up at Lily, "Lily, did you secretly get rich?"
"No."

"The card is from Ryan, he told me to buy whatever I want."
Lily shrugged and said matter-of-factly, "I'm in a bad mood because of his parents, so it's totally normal for him to pay!"
"Plus, worst case scenario, even if we don't end up together, I can sell all these bags and jewelry. I won't lose out!"
She spoke casually, but it hurt to hear.
Because I knew very well that Lily had real feelings for Ryan, but this not-so-pleasant meeting with his parents made her want to back away.
"As long as you're happy. Ryan can afford it."
I said.
"Is there anything you like? I'll buy it for you today!"
Lily waved her hand generously.
I shook my head with a wry smile, "No need, I'm not interested in these things. Plus, why are you acting like Jason?"
Jason also liked buying me things.
Even though I'd told him many times I wasn't interested in luxury goods.
To me, clothes are just clothes, bags are just bags - they're only different in quality and whether they suit me.
The extra price from the brand name seemed like meaningless markup to me.
"Alright then."
Lily shrugged.
She looked me up and down and couldn't help but sigh, "Sue, sometimes it's really hard to imagine that you've married into a wealthy family now. The wealthy lifestyle I used to see online was always extravagant, but how come when it comes to you, it's so simple?"
I leaned back on the sofa and shook my head, "It's not like that. I just think it's wasteful to buy things I won't use."
Lily, "Compared to you, I suddenly feel like I'm really wasteful."
I smiled, "Who says that? Everyone has their own lifestyle. As long as you're happy, that's what matters."
We chatted for a while longer.
The sales associate finally came back.
Because there were many items, Lily left her address for home delivery.
We continued shopping for a long time, and finally picked a restaurant with a great reputation for dinner.
Lily sat across from me and stretched,
"Sue, honestly, I never thought we'd be able to spend a whole day shopping like this, just the two of us."
I nodded, "Me neither."
