Chapter 250
Elizabeth was surprised. "Are you actually explaining this to me?"
There was a hint of amusement in Brian's voice, "You're my fiancée. Since our wedding needs to be postponed, of course I need to explain and discuss it with you."
Hearing this, I couldn't help but feel a stir of emotion inside.
Back when I worked by Brian's side, there was a constant stream of women around him, but I'd never seen him discuss things with anyone like this.
It seemed Brian really had changed quite a bit, and he and Elizabeth were well-matched.
Elizabeth curved her lips into a smile. From my angle, I could see her shy expression perfectly.
"Really? Then why is that?"
Brian didn't answer right away, instead, he asked back, "You know about my background, don't you?"
Elizabeth nodded.
Brian's background was hardly a secret in Seaside City.
He was the illegitimate son Terry had with a mistress. When his birth mother failed to secure her position, she fell ill from depression and died young.
After his birth mother passed away, Terry sent Brian far away to Sunrise City to be raised.
Still, he was his biological son, so Terry treated him slightly better than Tyler did—at least he gave Brian a branch company to manage.
As for DT Corp headquarters, it was initially managed by Brian's half-brother—Zephyr Ethan.
I really didn't know much about Zephyr.
What I know is that: he was Terry's eldest son with his first wife, he's very capable, and had always been groomed by Terry as his heir.
Zephyr lived up to expectations too. Under his management, DT Corp thrived.
But two years ago, there was a car accident that left Zephyr severely injured and comatose, lying in bed as a vegetable ever since.
When Terry realized there was little hope of Zephyr waking up, he finally called Brian to Seaside City to manage DT Corp.
I thought crossed my mind.
Could the postponement of Brian's wedding be related to Zephyr?
Had he woken up?
Was Brian about to lose his position, forcing the wedding to be delayed?
As soon as this thought emerged, I immediately dismissed it.
Impossible.
Brian and Elizabeth were currently engaged, and while Elizabeth might be love-struck, her family background was excellent.
The Ethan family couldn't possibly give up the support of the Perez family.
While I was thinking, Brian had already spoken.
"My brother Zephyr died. The family needs to hold a funeral first. It wouldn't be appropriate to have the funeral and wedding so close together."
Elizabeth sighed, "I see. Brian, my condolences."
Brian didn't respond.
It was easy to understand—Brian and Zephyr barely had any connection, so whatever grief he felt was probably minimal.
A large hand suddenly waved in front of me.
I snapped back to attention, "What's wrong?"
Jason's eyes were gloomy, with obvious dissatisfaction, "We came out to eat together, but your attention hasn't been on me once."
He even tugged at his floral tie.
I smiled a bit guiltily, "Let's eat, let's eat."
I took the initiative to serve Jason some food, softening my tone, "Your outfit looks really good today. You're truly my man."
Jason's expression softened slightly as he snorted.
"Of course."
Brian and Elizabeth finished eating and left first.
After they left, I asked Jason, "Zephyr passed away? Have you heard anything about it?"
"You seem very interested in the Ethan family's affairs."
Jason said coolly.
I raised an eyebrow, "I just happened to overhear it. Why are you being jealous for no reason, honey?"
I leaned over and kissed him on the cheek, coaxing, "Come on, you know Polaris Company is currently working with DT Corp. I just happened to hear this news and wanted to see if it might affect our company's partnership."
"Is that all?"
Jason asked.
I nodded repeatedly, "Of course, what else could it be?"
I looked at him with a half-smile, "Is someone really that insecure about his own charm?"
Jason pursed his lips, "Impossible. What is Brian compared to me?"
I smiled without saying more and quietly ate my meal.
Childish man, always making a fuss about everything.
News of Zephyr's death from illness quickly spread throughout Seaside City.
The Ethan family held a funeral for Zephyr and sent invitations to all the major families.
I leaned on the sofa, holding the invitation from the Ethan family in my hand, squinting at it.
Lila stood nearby and asked me curiously, "Mrs. Cooper, are you going?"
"Whether I go or not isn't really up to me. There's someone at home who gets jealous easily. If I decide to go on my own, we won't have any peace at home."
I shook my head helplessly.
Even though Jason and I were already married, he was still extremely wary of Brian.
As if us breathing the same air was a threat to Jason.
Lila laughed, "Mr. Cooper really cares about you."
"What are you two saying about me behind my back?"
Jason came downstairs in a casual suit, adjusting his cuffs.
I looked at him, "Talking about someone who gets jealous easily, and whether we'll attend the Ethan family's funeral."
"Someone who gets jealous easily? Me?"
Jason raised an eyebrow.
I was noncommittal, "There shouldn't be anyone else in our house with such a strong sense of jealousy."
I waved the invitation at Jason, "Should we go?"
"Yes, many of our business partners will be attending this funeral."
Jason nodded, "Honey, change your clothes and we'll go together."
He paused, then added, "Just wear something casual. Don't look too good."
I was instantly speechless.
I went upstairs and casually changed into plain-colored clothes before coming back down.
Jason and I set off together for the Ethan family.
On the way, Jason kept reminding me, "Honey, once we get there, just stay by my side. No matter who talks to you or asks you to go somewhere, don't go."
I didn't need to think hard to know who this "who" referred to.
I looked down at my phone and mentioned to Lily that I was attending the funeral.
Lily: [Ryan's taking me there too.]
I was a bit surprised.
Appearing together as a couple at such a special occasion was basically announcing their relationship to everyone.
Had the Scott family already accepted Lily?
Thinking we'd see each other soon anyway, I didn't ask more questions.
We arrived at the Ethan Villa.
This was my first time here.
Looking up, white cloth hung all over the villa's walls.
Brian and Elizabeth, wearing white flowers on their chests, stood at the entrance greeting guests.
I got out of the car and naturally took Jason's arm, walking with him.
Jason's lips curved up with satisfaction.
Walking to the entrance, after some brief formal pleasantries, Jason and I entered the Ethan Villa.
Terry had organized Zephyr's funeral very elaborately.
Many guests had come.
As soon as Jason entered, quite a few people came over to greet him.
My gaze swept around briefly.
They were all prominent figures in Seaside City.
Jason naturally exchanged pleasantries with them.
I stood to the side with an elegant but distant smile on my face, though my mind was wandering.
"Sue!"
Lily's voice suddenly rang out, and then someone took my arm.
"Lily, you guys came too."
I turned to look at them both.
Lily nodded, "I didn't want to come originally, but Ryan insisted on bringing me along, saying something about how this way everyone would know we're a couple."
