Arresting Mr President
Arresting Mr President
"Room 48." I mumbled, blowing nerves away.
I was here and there was no turning back. Uncle Pete and Jared had no idea where I was going. I'd lied about picking some things for Zion from the store.
This should be over in no time. I raised a fist and rapped gently but firmly on the door.
"Who's that?"
Two of the cops had followed me upstairs but were hiding from view.
That sounded like the President's voice.
I knocked again, cleared my tone in a bit to disguise it and said. "Room service."
There was seconds of silence, then the padding of feet coming towards the door. The door opened. "We didn't order any..." The rest of his words were drowned by shock.
"Hello, Mr. President." I plastered on a smile. "Can I come in?" He was yet to see the cops.
"Get out." Fear and anger had him growl out those words.
He tried to shut the door in my face but before he succeeded, I had a foot stuck between the door and used all of my power to push it open, making him lose balance and fall to the ground on his butt.
I stepped in. "What did I ever do to you, Mr. President?"
"How did you know I was here?" He asked instead, glaring at me.
"Oh, you know me. The same way I knew about your past."
"I wish I had killed you the moment you stepped into my office that day asking for my help."
A smirk appeared. "Your loss."
My attention was drawn from him to the figure that came out from an adjoining room. "Nina?"
She looked sober and very sad, it was almost heartbreaking watching her eyes fill. "Thank you for coming."
"You sold me out?" The President got up from his embarrassing position and went for her.
"Touch her and live to regret it." My tone was cold and he was smart enough to heed the warning.
He pivoted on his heel, red eyes bore into mine hatefully. "You ruined my life! The reputation I built all these years, your stupid, nosey self just couldn't stop sniffing my life. Now my family hates me."
"You're a snake, Mr. President. A foul one and I'm happy this is your end."
He laughed manically. The man seemed to be steep deep in drugs, his unkempt, wild appearance were a telltale. "It's just you. What can you do to me, you whore?!"
A quick roam of the room and I spotted cocaine scattered on a small table close to the bed, clothes were strewn across and left an untidy appearance.
There were two open bags and I saw two passports on the bed.
Was he planning to escape the country using his daughter as his ticket for free pass?
"Come in." I called to the cops outside.
That was their cue to rush in, guns pointed at him. "Mr. President, you have the right to remain silent as anything..."
It was only a matter of seconds but the sound of gunshot almost deafened my ears as I fell to the ground in a defensive reflex act.
"Damn I'd go to prison when my reputation is at...ahhh!"
Another gunshot, I ducked my head further into the ground.
"Miss Codza, please get up and leave with Miss Vaughn. I've called for backup." The second cop rushed over to the wounded Bronx and cuffed him despite bullet hitting his left arm. "Mr. President, you are under arrest for the murder of an officer, the possession of unlicensed gun, committing treason against your own country, dealing in..."
As the police officer listed his crimes, which I must say were going on and on, I raised myself from the floor and met with the cold, lifeless body of the first cop, I felt sad.
How could a president do this to his own people?
"Are you alright, Hailey? Can I still call you that?" Nina stood before me, her eyes too held sadness.
I held her hand and hurried out of the room.
I didn't stop till we were both safely downstairs. Cameras and recorders were already on the go, and they swarmed us.
"You brought the media?" Nina asked.
"It's only right the public knows exactly who President Bronx Vaughn is." I simply replied.
"We heard gunshots upstairs, Miss Codza. What happened?" One reporter asked.
"Our President, the man who is supposed to be protecting his people, actually killed an officer." I revealed to the public.
"He is a good father..." Nina spoke up, her tone trembling. "...at least he used to be. But he has always been a terrible leader. That's why my m-mother left him." She blinked back tears.
"What do you mean by that, Miss Vaughn? Are you trying to tell the public that..."
Noting her agony, I pulled her away from the crowd. "That's enough." I swatted a recorder away.
"There's the president." They yelled, ignoring Nina and me to go focus on a new catch.
They hounded him with questions. I turned to Nina. "What happened? Why are you here with him instead of your mom?"
"I didn't have a choice. He forced me to go with him. I...I..." She broke down into tears.
I drew her close and contorted her. "It's okay."
"No, it's not. My family is broken, my parents are getting divorced, my father is no longer the man I used to know and love, the country will hate anyone from the Vaughn family because of my father's criminal deeds meaning my life and my brothers' are ruined." She sobbed harder.
"Hey. You and your brothers are not your father. No one in their right sense will define a child by the mistakes of their parent."
"People can be cruel, you know." She sniffled.
"And you are strong, Nina. The strongest, toughest seventeen..."
"Eighteen." She corrected.
"Eighteen year old girl I ever had the good luck of meeting."
She wiped her eyes. "You think?"
"I know." I assured her with a smile.
She hugged me once again. "I'm sorry for hitting you, I had no right. I was just..."
"Shh. It's okay." I hugged her as warmly. "Jared and I are fine. I understand how tough it is to love someone only for them to love someone else." Pieces of memories from six years ago flashed into my mind, back when I loved Jared and he only had eyes for Mia.
How times changed! Now he wouldn't leave my side. He would...
"Hailey."
I saw him running towards him and pulled me — and Nina because she was still in my embrace — into a very tight hug. "Why did you lie about where you were going to?"
"Where did you know where to find me?" I asked.
He released me and took note of Nina just then. "Oh, hi. What are you doing here?" He looked around us. "The President?"
I went on to explain everything to him.
"I'm so glad you're okay." He hugged me again. "Let's go home. Uncle Pete and every other person are worried about you."
"We can't leave Nina here." I told him.
"We'll take her home and contact her mom. That fine by you, Nina?"
"Yes, senator Johnson." She replied with a smile. "Congratulations."
He smiled back, showing he held no grudge, making me prouder of him in that moment. "All thanks to your mother."
Together, the three of us went to my car.
"You didn't bring a car?" I saw no car of his anywhere.
"I knew you were with a car so I just used a cab." He answered, taking the keys from me.
I nodded, opening the passenger door. "Alright, but you still haven't told me how you knew where I was."
"The same way I've always found you." He buckled his belt and started the car.
I shook my head, a smile on my face. "I really need to delete that app on your phone."
