I had no idea why Nicol was so nervous and why she was crying so much I mean the doctor said the baby was a 100% fine he/she weight and size was right for the amount of months Nicol was pregnant. But I gave her the tissues and held her all the way to the SUV we needed to go to a quiet restaurant where we could sit in the corner and we could talk. When we got to the SUV Geoffrey and Herman wanted to ask if something is wrong but I just shook my head at them, they can’t ask questions now. I asked Geoffrey to take us to the Reading Room. I helped Nicol into the SUV and got in behind her, I pulled her to sit close to me and held her all the way to the restaurant. She cried most of the way there. She didn’t take her sunglasses off as we went into the restaurant, I asked the hostess to give us a very private spot and gave her a $100 when she did. We were sitting at the back of the restaurant far away from everyone else. “What can I get you sweetheart.” “Tea please I’m cold.” It wasn’t a cold day but she was getting cold that made me worry a bit. I ordered a scotch on the rocks for me and a tea for Nicol. When the waiter was gone, I took her hand in mine. “Talk to me sweetheart. What is going on?” she wiped her nose. “I’m just being silly.” She eventually said.
“I don’t care how silly you think you are being I need to know what is going on? Why were you so scared something is going to be wrong with the baby? And if it was bothering you so much, why didn’t you tell me?” “Like I said I was being silly. Everything is going so well for us. The way Nikki has excepted you, the fact that you are legally her father now. It’s going great between the two of us. You are doing great at work and are expanding and the charity work is taking of. All the arrangements for the gala have been done we are just waiting for our RSVP’s. You asked me to marry you.” I had to interrupt it was like she was losing track of what we are talking about. “All those things are good how does it have anything to do with our baby?” “I’m getting there Nicolas. And you are right everything is great not good I mean we are engaged and you got us the most stunning venue to get married in.” “Yes, I’m still waiting for the bad part here.” “That’s the thing Nicolas everything is great it’s like something has to go wrong, that shoe needs to drop and rip everything that is good away from me.” Oh fuck no. I got up from my seat and moved in next to her in her seat. I took her hands in mine. “Nothing is going to happen sweetheart there is no shoe that needs to drop. We’ve been through so much apart I think that was the bad parts of our lives. I don’t say nothing will ever go wrong in our lives again but why question the good things that are happening right now? I mean we don’t have a care in the world right now. We might or should I say I might have a very angry Karen on my hands when she finds out we are engaged and are expecting because then she will know we tricked her but it’s nothing I can’t handle and nothing and I repeat nothing will get in the way of our happiness okay. Nikki is happy the baby is healthy; you are mostly happy.” I said smiling at her because she was crying again. “And I? Fuck I’m over the moon with happiness.”
The waiter came and I decided for Nicol what she was going to eat I ordered her a Fried Chicken Sandwich with green onion, Asian slaw, sesame seeds, brioche bun, spicy aioli and hand cut fries. Fried chicken was always Nicol’s go to meal when she was depressed if not that then McDonalds and I ordered myself a steak sandwich with horseradish cream, ciabatta arugula, slow roasted tomato and hand cut fries. When the waiter left Nicol said “You really know me to well.” “No, I just know you sweetheart.” I moved in closer and kissed her again. We didn’t take notice of anyone in the restaurant it was when someone cleared his throat that I looked up and saw Anton and Karen standing at our table. Of all the restaurants in New York and they choice the same one as me. I squeezed Nicol’s leg letting her know I’ve got this and this is not a sign of the next shoe that is dropping.
“Anton Karen hi.” I said with a huge smile on my face. “Nicolas.” Anton said but he was looking at Nicol. “How can I help you guys?” I asked both Anton and Karen. “Oh no we just thought we saw you and wanted to say hello.” Karen said waving her hand around. Nicol was holding her hand underneath the table which was good, I want to catch them off guard and let them read all the news in the papers. “You look terrible do you have the flu or something?” Karen asked Nicol and then looked at Anton “Oh no my love we need to get away from her I can’t afford to get sick now not before our wedding.” I played dumb “You guys are getting married?” I tried to look shock. “Yes, so sorry you can’t get me anymore.” Karen said with a huge smile on her face. “Oh, shit Karen I was so looking forward in getting you back.” Both Anton and Karen took a deep breath and looked at Nicol who was actually smiling. “Are you making fun of me?” Karen asked “I would never.” I said grabbing at my chest and smiling at her. “Let’s go Karen his definitely making fun of you.” Anton said as he walked away, he wasn’t even two feet away from me when he turned around and said “You lost big time with this one Nicolas, I’m going to be so rich I’m not going to know what to do with the money.” “Good for you Anton.” I said as I went to sit next to Nicol again.
