The Ultimate Price
The Ultimate Price
Emma's POV
"There's a way to stop all of this," Elder Moira grabbed my shoulders, her eyes desperate. "But you're going to hate it."
Around us, corrupted wolves attacked their own pack members. The sky churned with the Shadow King's darkness while five apocalypse armies marched closer every second. I had maybe ten minutes before everything I loved was destroyed.
"Tell me," I demanded. "I don't care what it costs."
"That's the problem," Moira said, pulling an ancient scroll from her bag with shaking hands. "The cost is you."
Kai stumbled over, still weak from the possession. "What are you talking about?"
Moira unrolled the scroll, revealing words that glowed with moonlight. "This is the complete prophecy—the part the Moon Goddess made me hide until this exact moment. Emma, you were never supposed to stay in this world permanently."
My heart stopped. "What?"
"You're the Moon Goddess's daughter, but you're also still Emma Chen from the human world," Moira explained quickly as explosions sounded in the distance. "The Goddess sent your soul here temporarily to heal the werewolf world's broken bonds. But maintaining your presence here drains her power constantly. That's why the apocalypse started—the Goddess has been so weakened by keeping you here that the ancient evils she imprisoned are breaking free."
"So the apocalypse is my fault?" I whispered, horror washing through me.
"No," Kai said fiercely, gripping my hand. "Don't you dare blame yourself."
"The prophecy says you have two choices," Moira continued, ignoring our exchange. "Choice one: return to your human life immediately. Your soul goes back to Emma Chen's body, you wake up in your college dorm, and this world becomes just a dream you barely remember. But the moment you leave, the Moon Goddess regains her full power. She can re-imprison the Shadow King and stop all six apocalypse armies instantly."
"Everyone here lives," I said slowly. "The sanctuary, the packs, Kai—"
"Everyone survives," Moira confirmed. "The werewolf world is saved. But you're gone forever, with no memory of any of this."
My mind spun. I'd spent months building a life here. I'd found love, purpose, a family of outcasts who needed me. The thought of losing all of it, of not even remembering Kai's face—
"What's choice two?" Kai asked, his voice tight.
Moira's expression turned grim. "Choice two: you stay here permanently. Your human life ends—Emma Chen's body dies peacefully in her sleep, and her soul remains here forever as the Moon Goddess's daughter. But without her power returning to full strength, the Goddess can't stop the apocalypse. Everything burns. Everyone dies. Including you and Kai."
"That's not a choice," I said, my voice breaking. "That's impossible."
"The Moon Goddess knew you'd say that," Moira replied. "That's why she added one final clause. If you choose to leave, you can select one person to remember you. One person who'll know the truth of what you sacrificed, who'll carry your memory even though you won't remember them."
I looked at Kai. His heterochromatic eyes—one gold, one blue—stared back at me with complete understanding. He already knew what I had to choose.
"No," he said anyway. "Emma, no. We'll find another way."
"There is no other way!" Moira shouted as a corrupted wolf crashed through a nearby tent. "Emma, you have five minutes before the apocalypse armies arrive. Choose now, or everyone dies by default!"
I turned to Kai, memorizing every detail of his face. The silver-white hair that fell into his eyes. The scars across his chest from battles fought protecting others. The way he looked at me like I was his entire world.
"I choose you," I whispered. "To remember."
"Don't do this," Kai begged, pulling me close. "Please, Emma. I just got you back from the Shadow King. I can't lose you again."
"You're not losing me," I said, even though tears streamed down my face. "You're saving five thousand lives. You're stopping the apocalypse. You're becoming the hero you were always meant to be."
I kissed him one last time, pouring everything I felt into that moment. Love and grief and hope all mixed together.
Then I stepped back and looked at Elder Moira. "Send me home. Save them all."
Moira began chanting in an ancient language. Golden light surrounded me, and I felt my connection to this world starting to break. Through the glow, I saw Kai fall to his knees, his face shattered.
"I love you," I called out. "Even if I won't remember, some part of me will always—"
The light grew blinding. I felt myself being pulled away, back toward my human body, back toward a life where werewolves and magic were just stories.
But just before I disappeared completely, something impossible happened.
A second voice joined Moira's chanting—deep and powerful and filled with ancient authority. Through the golden light, I saw a figure I'd never seen before. A woman made of moonlight and starfire, wearing a crown of silver flames.
The Moon Goddess herself had appeared.
"I'm changing the prophecy," she announced, her voice shaking the ground. "Emma, you've proven something I didn't think possible. You've shown that love is stronger than fate."
She raised her hand, and the golden light pulling me away suddenly stopped.
"I'm giving you a third choice," the Moon Goddess said. "One I just created this very second, breaking ten thousand years of cosmic law. But first, you need to know the price."
"What price?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.
The Moon Goddess smiled sadly. "To stay here and save everyone, you must become something neither human nor goddess. You must merge with me completely—give up your individual existence and become the Moon Goddess's next incarnation. Emma Chen and the Goddess will both cease to exist. Only the merged being will remain."
"You'll have our combined power to stop the apocalypse," she continued. "But you won't be you anymore. You'll be something new. Something that loves Kai but isn't quite Emma. Something divine but not quite goddess."
Kai stared at me in horror. "That's not a choice either. That's death of the self."
"Maybe," the Moon Goddess agreed. "Or maybe it's evolution. Emma, you have thirty seconds. Choose: return to humanity and forget everything, let everyone die, or transform into something beyond both and save them all—but lose yourself in the process."
I looked at Kai one last time.
Then at the corrupted wolves destroying each other.
Then at the apocalypse armies cresting the hills.
"I choose—"
But before I could finish, the Shadow King's voice cut through everything: "I choose for you!"
His darkness slammed into me, and the world went black.
