Emma's Impossible Choice

Emma's Impossible Choice
Emma's POV
"Choose which three I kill first," the Shadow King said with Kai's mouth, his possessed body standing over our captured friends. "Or I'll kill all six."
My heart stopped. Zara, Beta Jake, and four sanctuary wolves knelt in chains before me, their eyes wide with terror. The Shadow King—wearing Kai like a puppet—smiled with my mate's face, and it made my stomach twist.
"You have ten seconds," the Shadow King continued, lifting Kai's clawed hand toward Zara's throat. "Nine. Eight. Seven—"
"Stop!" I shouted, stepping forward even though Agent Miller grabbed my arm. "I'll do whatever you want. Just don't hurt them."
"Whatever I want?" The Shadow King laughed, and it sounded wrong coming from Kai's voice. "Excellent. Then surrender yourself to me. Let me possess you too. With both Ancient Alpha bloodline powers and Moon Goddess healing magic combined in one body, I'll be unstoppable."
Alpha Damien growled beside me. "Emma, don't. If he gets your power—"
"Then everyone dies anyway," I interrupted, watching Zara struggle against her chains. "At least this way, some people survive."
"Wise choice," the Shadow King purred. "Come here, little goddess."
I took one step forward, then another. Inside my mind, I felt Kai screaming—a tiny voice trapped in his own body, begging me not to sacrifice myself.
I'm sorry, I thought, hoping somehow Kai could hear me. But I can't watch him kill our friends with your hands.
"Emma, wait," Elder Moira called out, her voice urgent. "The prophecy mentioned this moment. 'When darkness wears the face of love, only shared pain breaks the chains.'"
"What does that mean?" I demanded.
"It means you can't save Kai by surrendering," Moira explained quickly. "You have to fight him. Enter his mind through your mating bond and battle the Shadow King directly."
"But I don't know how to fight inside someone's mind!"
"You'll learn fast," Moira said grimly. "Or you'll both die trying."
The Shadow King's smile faded. "Clever old woman. But Emma won't risk it. She's too soft, too compassionate. She'd rather sacrifice herself than hurt her precious mate's body."
He was right. The thought of attacking Kai—even to save him—made my healing powers recoil in horror.
Then Zara spoke up, her voice steady despite her fear. "Emma, remember what you told me when we first met? You said the bravest thing we can do is hurt the ones we love when it's the only way to save them. You were talking about setting boundaries, but it applies here too."
Tears burned my eyes. "That's different. I can't—"
"You can," Zara insisted. "Because Kai would want you to. He'd rather die fighting than watch you become the Shadow King's slave."
Deep in my mating bond, I felt Kai's agreement. A tiny spark of his consciousness pushed through the Shadow King's control, just for a second.
Do it, Kai's voice whispered in my heart. I trust you.
I closed my eyes and dove into our mating bond.
The mental landscape inside Kai's mind was a nightmare. Where there should have been memories and emotions, I found only darkness and chains. The Shadow King had built a prison around Kai's consciousness, locking him away in a tiny corner while stealing his body.
"You shouldn't have come here," the Shadow King's voice echoed around me. His true form appeared—a massive shadow creature with too many eyes and teeth. "Now I can trap you too."
Dark chains shot toward me, but my healing light burned them away. "Give me back my mate!"
"He was never truly yours," the Shadow King laughed. "Kai Nightshade was broken long before you met him. Bullied, rejected, cast out. I didn't corrupt him—I just offered him the anger he already carried."
"Liar!" I shouted, pushing deeper into Kai's mind. "Kai chose hope over revenge. He chose love over hatred. You're the parasite, not him!"
I found Kai's consciousness chained in darkness, barely glowing. When I touched him, memories flooded through me—not just happy moments, but every painful experience that had shaped him. Every insult, every rejection, every lonely night wondering if anyone would ever love him.
"This is what I feed on," the Shadow King whispered. "Pain and isolation. Kai had so much of both. He was the perfect host."
"He also had courage," I said, wrapping my healing light around Kai's fading consciousness. "And hope. And the strength to keep being kind even when the world was cruel. You can't corrupt that."
"Watch me," the Shadow King snarled, sending more chains to separate us.
But something unexpected happened. When my healing power touched Kai's memories, they changed. The painful moments didn't disappear—instead, they transformed. Each memory of rejection became a moment where Kai had stayed true to himself despite the cost. Each lonely night became proof of his survival. Each scar became a badge of honor.
"No!" the Shadow King roared. "You're rewriting his past!"
"I'm not rewriting it," I said, understanding flooding through me. "I'm showing him what was always true. Kai was never weak or broken. He was strong enough to stay gentle in a harsh world. That's not corruption—that's heroism."
The chains around Kai's consciousness shattered. His light blazed brighter, pushing back the Shadow King's darkness.
"Impossible," the Shadow King hissed. "I had complete control!"
"You had fear," Kai's voice rang out, his consciousness fully awakened. "But Emma just reminded me what's stronger than fear."
Together, Kai and I turned our combined power on the Shadow King. His shadow form began disintegrating, unable to survive in a mind filled with love instead of pain.
"This isn't over!" the Shadow King screamed as we forced him out. "I'll find another host, another way to destroy you!"
Then he was gone, expelled from Kai's mind like poison from a wound.
I opened my eyes to find myself back in the real world, still standing in front of Kai. His body swayed, then collapsed. I caught him, feeling our mating bond pulse with exhausted but genuine warmth.
"Kai?" I whispered. "Are you—"
His eyes opened—both golden and blue, clear and aware. "I'm me again," he said weakly. "Thanks to you."
Relief flooded through me so intensely I almost collapsed too. Alpha Damien quickly freed our captured friends while Agent Miller secured the perimeter.
But our celebration was short-lived.
"Emma!" Elder Moira's shout made me turn. "Look at the sky!"
I looked up and my blood turned to ice.
The Shadow King's massive form was rising above the forest, no longer constrained to a single body. He'd become pure darkness, spreading across the sky like an approaching storm.
"You freed me from that weak vessel," the Shadow King's voice boomed across the entire territory. "Thank you, Emma. Now I no longer need a host. I can corrupt everyone at once!"
Dark tendrils began raining down from the sky, seeking any living creature to infect. I watched in horror as sanctuary wolves, alliance members, even animals started changing, their eyes turning black as shadow corruption took hold.
"We didn't save Kai," I whispered in dawning horror. "We just made the Shadow King stronger."
Kai struggled to his feet, his face pale. "Emma, how many corrupted wolves can you heal at once?"
I looked around at hundreds of wolves being infected every second. "Maybe twenty before I collapse from exhaustion."
"There are five thousand wolves in this territory," Kai said quietly.
We stared at each other, both understanding the impossible math.
Then Maya's voice crackled through the radio with the worst news yet: "Emergency alert! The other five apocalypse armies just started their attack. They're coming from all directions at once. ETA: fifteen minutes."
