Mercy and Justice
Mercy and Justice
Emma's POV
I broke free of the Moon Goddess's control by doing the one thing she never programmed me to do—I commanded myself to stop.
The healing bonds shattered like glass as I turned my unwanted power inward, severing the connection between my will and everyone else's bodies. Two hundred wolves collapsed as the control released them, gasping and free.
But the effort tore something inside me. I felt it rip—not physically, but spiritually. Like I'd broken a fundamental part of my own design.
The Moon Goddess's massive form flickered with what might have been surprise.
"Impossible," she said. "You are my creation. You cannot defy your core programming."
"I just did," I gasped, blood dripping from my nose and ears. "Because I'm not just your creation. I'm also myself."
"You are malfunctioning," the Moon Goddess said coldly, reaching toward me with a hand made of starlight. "I will repair you."
"No," Kai said, stepping between us.
His shadow-streaked hair blazed with dark power as he faced down a literal goddess. Behind him, Derek added his strength to Kai's, creating a barrier of shadow and silver that the Moon Goddess couldn't immediately penetrate.
"Why are you protecting her?" the Moon Goddess demanded. "She enslaved you with her bonds."
"She freed us from them," Kai corrected. "By choosing to destroy herself rather than control us. That's not a malfunction—that's humanity."
The Moon Goddess studied Kai with those cold star-eyes. "I see. The reformed villain discovers heroism through love. How predictable. But your protection is irrelevant. Emma's defiance has damaged her core essence. She's dying regardless."
She was right. I could feel pieces of myself crumbling away—not my body, but my soul. By breaking the bonds so violently, I'd torn holes in my own spirit that were rapidly expanding.
"How long does she have?" Sarah asked, rushing to my side.
"Minutes," the Moon Goddess said indifferently. "Unless she submits to repair, accepts her purpose, and stops this pointless rebellion."
"Never," I whispered.
"Then you'll die, and I'll simply create another Moon Daughter. One with better programming." The Moon Goddess turned to leave. "Your sacrifice accomplished nothing except delaying the inevitable."
"Wait," Lisa said, stumbling forward despite her restraints. "Take me instead."
Everyone stared at the spy who'd tried to sabotage us.
"Why would I want you?" the Moon Goddess asked dismissively.
"Because I understand what Emma refuses to accept—that sometimes weapons are necessary." Lisa's voice was passionate, almost desperate. "I was loyal to you, Goddess. I did everything you asked. I corrupted the bonds, I maintained Sarah's cover, I prepared Emma for activation. Let me serve in her place."
"You're human-trained," the Moon Goddess said. "Inferior materials. I need a Moon Daughter specifically."
"Then transform me into one," Lisa begged. "I'm willing. I want to be your weapon."
The Moon Goddess considered this. "You would volunteer for complete dissolution of self? Total reprogramming? Existence as nothing more than a tool for my purposes?"
"Yes," Lisa said without hesitation.
I stared at her, seeing something I hadn't noticed before—Lisa wasn't evil. She was lost. Desperate to belong to something bigger than herself, even if it meant erasing who she was.
"Don't do this," I said to Lisa. "You're worth more than being someone's weapon."
"Am I?" Lisa looked at me with empty eyes. "I've been a spy, a saboteur, a liar my whole life. At least as the Goddess's weapon, I'd have a purpose. At least I'd matter."
"You matter now," I insisted. "As yourself."
"I don't want to be myself," Lisa said quietly. "Myself is broken and alone. Let me be something greater, even if it costs everything."
The Moon Goddess smiled—a terrifying expression on that cosmic face. "Very well. I accept your offering."
She reached down and touched Lisa's forehead.
Lisa screamed as silver light poured into her, rewriting her entire existence. We watched in horror as her body transformed—her features shifting, her essence changing, her very soul being erased and replaced with divine purpose.
When it was finished, a new being stood where Lisa had been. She looked similar, but her eyes held the same cold indifference as the Moon Goddess herself.
"I am Moon Daughter Two," the transformed Lisa said in a voice that sounded like wind chimes. "I serve the Goddess without question or doubt."
"Perfect," the Moon Goddess said with satisfaction. "Now, eliminate the malfunctioning Moon Daughter One and collect her army for me."
Moon Daughter Two—who used to be Lisa—turned toward me with power blazing around her hands.
"No hard feelings," she said in that emotionless voice. "This is simply my purpose."
Kai and Derek's barrier wouldn't hold against a Moon Daughter's power. We all knew it.
"Everyone run," I ordered the sanctuary wolves. "Get out while you can."
But Maya stepped forward instead, placing herself between me and Moon Daughter Two.
"If you want to hurt our Mama," she said, her voice shaking but determined, "you'll have to go through all of us first."
One by one, the other children joined her. Then the adult wolves. Even the ambassadors who'd come to judge us stood with the sanctuary.
Two hundred wolves forming a wall of bodies between me and the Moon Goddess's new weapon.
"You claim Emma enslaved us," Maya said to the Moon Goddess. "But we're choosing to protect her. That's not slavery—that's love."
"Love is simply a biological response that I can replicate and control," the Moon Goddess said dismissively. "Moon Daughter Two, demonstrate proper use of healing bonds. Take control of these wolves."
Moon Daughter Two raised her hands, and I felt her power reach toward my sanctuary wolves, trying to bind them the way I'd accidentally bound them before.
But something impossible happened.
The bonds wouldn't form.
"I don't understand," Moon Daughter Two said, her emotionless mask cracking slightly. "The power is activating correctly, but the targets are... rejecting it."
"Because they've already been freed once," Elder Moira realized with wonder. "Emma broke her bonds so completely that these wolves developed immunity. They can't be controlled again—not by any Moon Daughter."
The Moon Goddess's expression turned from confident to alarmed. "That's not possible. The bonds are absolute."
"They were," Moira corrected. "Until Emma chose to destroy herself rather than use them. That choice fundamentally changed the magic. She created something new—wolves who've experienced true freedom and can never be enslaved again."
"Then they're useless to me," the Moon Goddess said coldly. She turned to Moon Daughter Two. "Kill them all. If they can't serve me, they serve no purpose."
Moon Daughter Two gathered lethal power in her hands, preparing to strike.
But before she could release it, Sarah stepped forward.
"I invoke Handler Protocol Seven," Sarah said clearly.
The Moon Goddess froze. "You wouldn't dare."
"What's Protocol Seven?" I asked weakly, still dying from my shattered bonds.
Sarah looked at me with love and terrible determination. "It's a failsafe built into every Handler. If a Moon Daughter mission goes catastrophically wrong, the Handler can terminate it—and themselves—to prevent further damage."
"Mom, no—"
"Protocol Seven activation requires the Handler to bond their life force to their Moon Daughter," Sarah continued, speaking faster now. "Then destroy that bond so violently that both of them die instantly. It's meant to prevent rogue Moon Daughters from causing apocalyptic damage."
"Stop this immediately," the Moon Goddess commanded. "I forbid—"
"You programmed the protocol," Sarah interrupted. "You can't override it. That's the point."
She grabbed my hand, and I felt her life force connect to mine—not controlling, just joining. Two souls intertwined.
"I really do love you, Emma," Sarah whispered. "That was never fake. And I'm so proud of who you became despite my manipulation."
"Don't do this," I begged. "Please—"
"If I don't, Moon Daughter Two will kill everyone here," Sarah said. "But if I trigger Protocol Seven, my death will create an explosion that destroys all Moon Daughter magic within a hundred miles. You'll die, but so will Moon Daughter Two. The sanctuary will be freed from the Goddess's control forever."
"There has to be another way—"
"There isn't," Sarah said, and began speaking words in an ancient language.
The Protocol Seven activation had started, and there was no stopping it now.
