Spiritual Awakening
Spiritual Awakening
Emma's POV
Three minutes left, and I had no idea what to teach.
The shadow children's screams filled the valley as their bodies twisted larger. My living children watched with terror, waiting for me to save them.
But I was out of time. Out of power. Out of ideas.
"I can't do this," I whispered, sinking to my knees.
"Finally," Elder Moira said, "you speak truth."
She knelt beside me. "You've been trying to heal bodies, child. But these shadow children aren't sick in their bodies—they're sick in their souls."
"I don't know how to heal souls," I said desperately.
"Yes, you do." Moira gestured at Maya and the other children. "Every abandoned pup who came here had a wounded soul. Yet they're healing. Why?"
I looked at the children, thinking about the frightened kids who'd arrived. Now they stood together, brave despite everything.
"Because they feel safe?"
"Because you healed their spiritual wounds first," Moira corrected. "You gave them unconditional acceptance. That's real healing magic."
Two minutes left.
"How do I use it?" I asked urgently.
"Stop healing what you can see. Start healing what you feel." Moira placed her hand over my heart. "Close your eyes. What do you sense from those shadow children?"
I extended my awareness toward them. Beneath the darkness, I felt something else.
Pain. Crushing, terrible pain.
"They're suffering," I gasped.
"Because Derek corrupted their souls," Moira explained. "The shadow form is just a symptom. The real disease is spiritual—he filled them with hate and fear."
"So I remove the hate?"
"No. You add something stronger." Moira's voice was intense. "Love, child. Pure love that says 'you matter, even at your worst.'"
One minute left.
I looked at my children. "Listen carefully. We're going to overwhelm their darkness with light."
"How?" Maya asked.
"Remember every moment someone made you feel loved," I said quickly. "Hold that feeling in your heart."
The children closed their eyes, remembering.
"Now give that feeling to the shadow children. Share every ounce of love you've received."
"But they're monsters," one boy protested.
"Neither was I," Maya said quietly. "My pack abandoned me to die. Emma saved me anyway. She loved me before I deserved it."
"Same," said the girl with one arm. "Emma found me and never asked why I wasn't wanted."
Thirty seconds.
"Now!" I shouted.
The children formed their circle around the shadow children. This time, instead of physical power, they channeled pure emotion—every memory of being held, fed, protected, chosen.
I added my love to the stream—for Kai, Sarah, these children, even Derek.
The love crashed into the shadow children like a wave.
They screamed—not pain, but release. Their shadow forms shattered, revealing small, frightened children underneath. Real children, crying but alive.
"Impossible," Derek snarled. "How did you—"
"Love is stronger than corruption," I said. "Always."
Elder Moira nodded. "Second trial passed. You've learned healing isn't about fixing what's broken—it's about loving what's wounded."
The living children rushed forward, hugging the former shadow children.
"But there's a third trial," Moira said grimly. "And this one will break your heart."
The newly healed children started screaming again.
"He's still in my head!" one cried.
"I can hear Derek!" another sobbed.
Dark veins appeared under their skin. Derek's corruption was returning.
"You purified their souls," Moira explained, "but Derek's blood bond remains. They'll never be free until it's severed."
"Then I'll sever it," I said desperately.
"Only blood can break a blood bond." Moira's eyes pierced me. "Derek created them with his corrupted blood. To free them, you must replace it with yours."
"So I'll—"
"Soul blood, child. Life essence." Moira gestured at thirty-seven children. "Each one needs enough of your life force to sustain them. You're already dying. This would kill you instantly."
"This is your third trial," Moira said. "Sacrifice over survival. Die saving them, or live and watch them become Derek's weapons again. Choose."
I looked at the children fighting Derek's call. At Kai, who would lose his mate.
"There has to be another way."
"There isn't."
A little boy walked up to me, dark veins spreading.
"Mama," he whispered. "Am I bad?"
My heart shattered. "No, baby. Never."
"Then why does the bad man still own me?"
His eyes turned black. Derek's voice echoed: "Come home, little shadow."
"I don't want to be a monster," the boy sobbed.
I held him tight. "You're not a monster."
"Then heal me," he begged. "Please, Mama."
The others were transforming too, Derek reclaiming them.
"Choose now," Moira demanded. "Die and save them, or live and destroy them."
Kai grabbed my hand. "Emma, don't sacrifice yourself."
I looked at the boy in my arms, thinking about everything I'd learned.
"I choose both," I said.
"Excuse me?"
"I choose to die AND live. That's what the triple mating bond is for. Zara and Kai can sustain my life while I give it to these children."
Moira's expression shifted. "The ceremony isn't until tomorrow."
"Then we do it now," I said firmly.
Moira shook her head. "The bonding requires three days of preparation. You can't—"
The boy in my arms lunged for my throat, fully transformed.
Kai grabbed him, holding the thrashing shadow child back.
"Time's up," Moira said. "Choose. Die heroically, or kill them."
I looked at Kai's desperate face, at the shadow children, at Maya watching.
Then I did something no Moon Daughter had ever done.
I started the mating bond ceremony without permission.
"By the light of the moon and my love," I began, reaching for Kai and Zara's hands, "I claim you both as mates and offer my life to be shared—"
"STOP!" Moira shouted. "If you complete that bond incorrectly, you'll destroy all three souls!"
"—so that I may die and live, give and receive, sacrifice and survive!"
Power exploded from my body.
And everything went catastrophically wrong.
