Chapter 123: Unseen Outcome 2
Chapter 123: Unseen Outcome 2
Scarlett’s POV
Keith was sitting on a couch, his posture relaxed but weary, chatting animatedly with Maxwell and Clay. His clothes were worn and bloodied, and his face carried the weight of exhaustion, but he was alive. Beside him sat a striking red-haired woman, her appearance similarly battle-worn but vibrant. I didn’t know who she was, and in that moment, it didn’t matter.
Tears welled up in my eyes, and I began to question if what I was seeing was real. Was this a dream? My mind played cruel tricks on me often enough, with visions that blurred the line between reality and fantasy. What if this was just another one?
“Keith?” I managed to say, my voice barely above a whisper.
His head turned toward me, and the moment his eyes met mine, everything felt real. He smiled, and I didn’t wait another second. I rushed toward him, and as he stood, I threw my arms around him, holding him tightly as tears streamed down my face.
“I thought you were… they said you were…” My voice broke, unable to finish the sentence.
He held me just as tightly, his warmth grounding me as he spoke softly. “I would have been, Scarlett, if you hadn’t warned me beforehand.”
He pulled back slightly to look at me, his gaze soft and filled with concern. “How are you?” he asked gently.
I laughed shakily, tears still falling, unsure how to answer. Before I could say anything, Clay chimed in with a grin. “She’s better now that she knows you’re safe.”
I turned to glare at Clay half-heartedly, pouting at his teasing. Maxwell, ever the calm and composed one, added, “Honestly, Scarlett has been a shell since we came back with the bad news. She refused to believe you were dead. She needed to see your body before she could accept it. I think something deep down told her you weren’t gone.”
I turned back to Keith, my mind racing with questions. The relief of seeing him alive was overwhelming, but I needed answers. “How?” I asked, my voice filled with equal parts curiosity and disbelief.
“After you spoke to me on the phone,” Keith began, his voice steady but reflective, “I’ll admit, it was hard for me to accept that someone out there could defeat me. But I trusted your words and your magic. Instead of focusing on a defense plan, I came up with an escape plan. It wasn’t an easy choice, but I knew it was the only way to protect as many as I could.”
He sighed heavily, the weight of his decisions clear in his tone. “I also warned all the Western Alphas to surrender if the rider came. But they were too stubborn for their own good. That’s why the rider—who I’ve since learned has taken up your father’s name—was able to lay waste to parts of the West. Had those Alphas listened, they would still be standing. Instead, some of them thought engaging the rider would force me into a direct battle. They didn’t understand the danger, Scarlett. They didn’t listen.”
His gaze darkened for a moment, and his voice grew quieter. “It wasn’t easy getting away from Woodshire. We lost good men in the process, but some of my troops survived. Others are scattered with weapons, waiting for my signal to regroup. I made sure they had escape plans of their own.”
Hearing this, my heart ached for the losses he had suffered, but I was grateful for his foresight and that he was here, alive and safe. Without thinking, I hugged him tightly again, relief washing over me.
Keith returned the embrace briefly before pulling back, his expression softening as he regarded me. “Your magic feels more stable now,” he commented, tilting his head as if to assess me further.
I broke the hug and nodded, giving a small smile. “Apparently, three of the five elements belong to my mates,” I said, glancing toward Maxwell and Clay, who were watching us quietly from the side.
Keith smiled knowingly. “I suspected as much,” he said. “After you left, I did some research. You’re the only Valkin who can wield and manage all five elements together. It likely has to do with the fact that you’re a woman and that you have more than one mate, coupled with your unique lineage as a Valkin Alpha. You’re unprecedented, Scarlett. A lot of studies need to be done to help future female Valkin Alphas like you.”
His tone was thoughtful and almost admiring, and I nodded, appreciating his perspective. Before I could respond, his expression shifted, as if he had just remembered something important. Turning toward the red-haired woman who had been sitting quietly beside him, Keith extended a hand to her and helped her stand.
“Scarlett, I want you to meet Emerald,” Keith said with a soft smile, gesturing to the woman beside him. She smiled at me warmly, her demeanor radiating kindness and confidence.
“Keith has told me a lot about you,” she said. “I’m so happy to finally meet the woman who healed his heart.”
Her words made me feel shy, a rare sensation for me, but it was fleeting. I quickly returned her smile and said, “It’s nice to meet you, Emerald.”
“Emerald is my second chance mate,” Keith added, his voice filled with pride and affection. “We met three weeks ago.”
I was momentarily stunned, my emotions swirling with surprise and relief. Then, a genuine smile spread across my face. My heart felt lighter than it had in weeks. Emerald was clearly a remarkable woman, and Keith—mature, kind, and steady—was the perfect match for her.
“Oh, goodness, this is great news!” I exclaimed, pulling Emerald into an impromptu hug.
She hesitated for a brief moment before wrapping her arms around me, returning the gesture with warmth.
I felt the weight of guilt I’d carried for so long—guilt for leaving Keith behind, for what I feared might have been unresolved between us—begin to lift. Fate had stepped in to solve what I couldn’t, and for that, I was profoundly grateful.
This truly was a beautiful moment, one that turned the day into something unexpectedly joyful.
We spent the rest of the afternoon talking, sharing stories, and catching up on all that had happened.
Lucian, in particular, seemed to take great pleasure in recounting my fiery confrontation with Garland. He told the story with so much enthusiasm that it almost seemed like a favorite memory of his. Keith laughed, and even Emerald seemed impressed by the tale.
Later, we shared a meal together. Keith and Emerald were given a guesthouse to stay in, offering them the privacy and comfort they needed. Keith’s men, many of whom had traveled far and endured much, were also treated with care and provided accommodations. It was clear they needed the rest, and seeing them settled gave me a sense of peace.
As we discussed our plans, a simple strategy emerged. I would train with Keith and Alison to sharpen my skills and harness my magic, while Emerald would train with my mates. Being an Alpha werewolf, Emerald had a natural strength and presence, but it was important she refine her combat skills. She needed to be able to stand alongside Keith and support him in the battles to come.
Keith was reluctant at first, clearly protective of Emerald. “Scarlett is a Valkin,” he argued. “She’s meant for this. But Emerald doesn’t need to be involved.”
Lucian countered firmly but respectfully. “She’s an Alpha, Keith. You know as well as I do that her strength will be an asset. And I promise you, no matter what, we’ll ensure she’s safe.”
There was a moment of tension, but Keith’s trust in Lucian won out. He sighed and gave a small nod, agreeing to the plan. The mutual respect between them was clear, and I could tell that both men were prepared to do whatever it took to protect those they cared about.
That afternoon, as the sun began to set, I reflected on how far we had all come. For the first time in a long time, I felt a glimmer of hope—not just for the battles ahead, but for the lives we were all fighting to protect.
