A Challenge Ripples - Halley's POV

A Challenge Ripples - Halley's POV
The next morning comes too quickly. The clearing is bathed in pale morning light with mist curling through the tree trunks like ghostly fingers. I almost think they’re reaching for me and maybe it’s an omen of what today’s outcome will be.

The forest hums quietly, holding its breath as we step into the open. Sam and I move slowly, our boots pressing silently into the damp earth. Behind us, warriors from Rook’s and Cale’s packs fan out forming a silent protective ring around us. Every leaf that stirs underfoot, every distant birdcall, feels amplified, and I know that Lira’s betrayal is somewhere here in the crowd.

We pause at the edge of the circle with our hearts pounding, as the council convenes. Wolves gather on either side, forming a semi-circle of scrutiny and suspicion. My father sits at the center, posture rigid, and his jaw tight. His eyes sweep the assembled pack like a predator assessing prey. Lira is there, as always, impeccably still, neutral, and even polite. Her lips curve just enough to mask her true intent. I can feel her weighing how much I know and how quickly she might act.

Sam’s hand brushes mine. “Steady,” he murmurs, his calm like a tether I can cling to. “Patience,” he reminds me.

Honestly, how they think he is beneath an alpha is beyond me. He may have been born a beta, but the bond we now share has made him into an alpha that any pack should be proud to have. His knowledge and patience extend much farther than any I’ve ever had or even my family. It makes no sense why they wouldn’t want someone with his demeanor as a leader over a pack.

I nod when he glances my way, forcing my breathing to slow before turning to face the council. Wolves shift restlessly. Some lean forward in anticipation while others retreat back while looking at us.

And then some look on, like they know something. It makes me wonder if they are the ones Rook got to last night. He left after our conversation, promising results. I hope he was successful.

The council leader rises, his voice carrying over the murmurs. “We have convened to discuss the outcomes of the Summit. Any disputes will be addressed within this circle. You may speak, but know this. The pack’s unity comes first.” His eyes lock onto mine briefly, cold and unyielding. “Your actions have been bold, Halley, but boldness does not grant immunity to consequence.”

I straighten, my chin high, and my pulse humming. Sam’s hand tightens around mine. I can feel the energy in the clearing shifting, simmering just below the surface. This is the moment I’ve anticipated. A rejection is coming.

And then it comes. The formal statement lands like a stone thrown into still water:

“You, Halley and Sam, are not to be allowed this bond. Your union is deemed a risk to the stability of wolf shifters and cannot be sanctioned. We are not changing the rules.”

The words hit hard, but I don’t falter. My jaw tightens as my breath remains steady. Sam’s eyes are sharp, scanning for signs of dissent among the council.

But it’s not them that stirs. It’s my brother, who stands tall toward the front of the crowd. “And what if we don’t agree.”

My father snaps his attention toward him, his eyes narrowing. “Reed, don’t challenge.”

Reed doesn’t back down. He squares his shoulder and stands firm. “I’m not challenging, but I am going to state facts. You are not even the alpha of our pack anymore. I am and I want the council to reconsider the decision. That requires another forty eight hours, since it’s a formal appeal.”

My father stands, his face turning crimson. “That can only happen if you have support. And it can’t be them.”

This is where Rook has come in handy.

Several alphas step forward and I recognize a few of them instantly. Adrian and Marcus are toward the front, followed by Tyler, and oddly the four Howler alphas.

“We want to challenge the decision.”

I’m surprised, considering they wanted my hand and for me to be their mate. “But…”

Sam stops me from questioning it.

A ripple of noise travels through the crowd. It seems I’m not the only one surprised. There are whispers, gasps, and a few sharp barks by those who are shifted. My father turns to look at them, his narrowed gaze judging them.

Out of the corner of my eye, I see it. A few wolves shift closer to Cale. My breath catches as I realize there are more that aren’t following the council’s order. Rook fixes his gaze on a few council members, his mouth curving into a devious smile.

Half the council is no longer loyal.

My heartbeat thuds sharply in my ears. Sam’s grip around my hand tightens.

This is it. This is the shift. This is our moment.

The council leader’s voice cuts through the crowd. “The laws are clear. This bond cannot be sanctioned. And any who oppose the council’s ruling will be held accountable.”

But then his own people turn on him. “I accept their challenge to the rules,” one of the other male’s says.

A rumble of disagreement rolls through the clearing, deeper and louder than before. The council leader’s eyes dart toward the one who spoke, disbelief tightening every line of his face. The shift in power is no longer subtle. It’s visible, undeniable, and very much alive. Wolves who once stood rigid now lean toward us, their stances widening, and their shoulders squared as if bracing for the inevitable.

Rook did it. He made them switch sides. I almost breathe a sigh of relief seeing that we stand a chance, but then I catch someone moving.

Lira.

Just a single step, but it’s enough. Her gaze slices through the crowd, calculating, and tracking the sudden fracture in control. She knows this moment wasn’t supposed to happen. Her posture stiffens, her fingers twitch, and her weight shifts to the balls of her feet.

She’s preparing for something. I inhale slowly, every instinct screaming.

But then, her eyes widen as if she’s surprised and something comes flying toward my head.
