22: When Monsters Kneel
22: When Monsters Kneel
"The only thing more dangerous than a vampire in love… is a vampire with something to lose."
Luca’s POV
The Moment of Judgment
The temperature in the room dropped the second the Elders stepped inside. It wasn’t just the usual stillness of vampires entering a space—it was something deeper, something primal. A presence that commanded submission.
There were four of them, each carrying an aura of authority so strong it made the air feel heavier. These were the creatures who had ruled our world for centuries, the ones who decided which bloodlines lived and which ones were wiped from existence. Their word was law, absolute and unquestioned.
And right now, they were looking at Isabella as if she were a threat.
Gregor, the oldest among them, stood at the front. His dark eyes flickered with curiosity, but beneath it, there was something colder. Something calculating. The moment his gaze settled on Isabella, I knew.
They had already sensed the change in her.
She wasn’t just a girl caught between worlds anymore. She was something new. Something unknown. And that made her dangerous.
\-------------------------
The Power She Can’t Hide
I positioned myself in front of her without thinking, a silent barrier between her and them. But it didn’t matter how close I kept her. The air around her still pulsed, radiating an energy that hadn’t been there before.
It was subtle, but unmistakable—a quiet hum, like the deep vibration of a storm before it breaks.
Gregor’s lips curled into a slow, knowing smile. He wasn’t fooled by my attempt to shield her.
"So," he murmured, voice smooth as silk. "The rumors are true."
Beside me, Isabella stiffened. Her heartbeat quickened, thudding so loudly I knew they could all hear it. I could feel it too, her pulse brushing against mine, wild and unrestrained.
"I don’t answer to rumors," I said, keeping my voice cold, steady. "Why are you here?"
Gregor tilted his head slightly, his smile widening. "Don’t insult me by pretending ignorance, Devereaux."
His attention flicked back to Isabella, sharp and assessing.
"Show us what she is."

Isabella’s POV
The Monster Inside
Every instinct in my body screamed at me to run.
The Elders weren’t just vampires. They were something far worse—ancient, lethal, the kind of creatures that could erase entire bloodlines with a single command.
And right now, their attention was locked on me.
But I wasn’t the same girl who had once feared the dark. I wasn’t the same girl who had clung to Luca for protection, hoping he could keep the monsters away.
I had become something else. And even though I didn’t fully understand what was happening to me… I knew one thing.
I wasn’t going to cower.
I took a steady breath, forcing my shoulders back, and stepped out from behind Luca. My pulse roared in my ears, but I ignored it, meeting Gregor’s gaze with my own.
"If you want to see what I am," I said, my voice quiet but firm, "come closer."
\-------------
Luca let out a low growl, a warning that vibrated through my skin as his fingers tightened around my wrist. His grip wasn’t painful, but it was firm—possessive.
"You’re playing with fire, dolcezza," he murmured, his voice rough, like he was barely holding himself back.
I turned my head slowly, letting my gaze drag over him, watching the way his jaw clenched, how the silver in his eyes burned brighter.
His control cracked.
"Maybe I want to burn," I whispered.
His nostrils flared, and for a split second, I saw something dark flash through his expression. A hunger that had nothing to do with blood.
His grip on me tightened as he pulled me against him, my back flush against his chest. I felt the hard press of his body, the heat of him despite the cold tension in the air.
"Careful," he warned again, his lips brushing against my ear. "They’re not the only monsters in this room."
But even as the Elders stood there, watching, judging, Luca couldn’t stop touching me.
\---------------
Gregor tilted his head, studying me like I was some strange new creature he couldn’t quite figure out.
"Enough," he said, his voice carrying the weight of command. "Show us your power—or we’ll take her with us."
Luca let out a sound that was closer to a snarl than a word, his body going tense beside me. His arm brushed against mine, a silent promise that he wouldn’t let them take me.
But I placed my hand over his and stepped forward, away from him.
"I’m not going anywhere," I said, keeping my chin lifted.
I had no idea how to control what was happening inside me. My body still felt foreign, my power shifting beneath my skin like it was waiting to be unleashed.
But I wasn’t going to let them take me from him.
I took another step forward, and the energy inside me stirred, growing heavier. The air thickened, pressing against my skin.
When I spoke again, my voice didn’t sound fully human anymore.
"You want to see?" A slow, dark smile formed on my lips. "Then watch."
\------------------
I let go of the fear.
The second I stopped holding back, the energy inside me surged outward in a violent pulse. The room trembled beneath my feet, the windows rattling as if caught in the force of an unseen storm.
The Elders remained still. They didn’t flinch.
But Luca did.
He felt it too—the shift. And from the way his fingers flexed at his sides, I knew it wasn’t just power he felt.
It was desire.
He wanted me like this.
Gregor’s smile faded slightly. For the first time, I saw something else flicker in his expression. Uncertainty.
"What… are you?" he demanded, his voice quieter now.
I took another step forward, heart pounding, power still coiling in my veins. I could feel it pressing against his, and for the first time, I sensed hesitation.
His power faltered against mine.
"Something you can’t control," I whispered.
\------------------
Gregor’s eyes narrowed, his expression darkening.
Before he could speak, another Elder moved forward. A woman with long, silver-white hair, her gaze sharp as ice.
"She’s no ordinary vampire," she said, voice calm but certain. "She is the prophecy."
Luca tensed behind me, his heartbeat hammering hard enough that I could hear it.
"She’s under my protection," he said, his voice cold as steel.
"For now," Gregor replied smoothly.
He studied me for a long moment, his sharp eyes calculating. Then his lips curled into a slow, cruel smile.
"But protection has a price, Devereaux."
Luca’s entire body went rigid beside me.
I reached for his hand, wrapping my fingers around his wrist. My pulse was erratic, my breath shallow. "What price?"
Gregor’s smirk deepened.
"When her transformation is complete," he said, his voice quiet and deliberate, "you will deliver her to us—or we’ll take her by force."
The words hung in the air, thick with finality.
And just like that, the Elders turned and disappeared into the shadows.
I stood there, my body still thrumming with power, my heart racing.
Because I knew the truth.
The next time they came for me… they wouldn’t leave without me.
