Chapter 104. Push Me Away
Chapter 104. Push Me Away
Lia
"Or what?" Theron didn't move, didn't cower. "You'll lock her up again? Prove to everyone watching that you see her as property instead of a partner?"
"I'll fucking kill you."
"Try it." Theron shifted slightly, positioning himself between Kai and me. "But ask yourself…are you angry because I kissed her, or because she didn't immediately push me away?"
Kai lunged.
They collided with a sound like thunder, Kai's fist connecting with Theron's jaw, sending the silver-haired Alpha stumbling back. But Theron recovered instantly, his return strike catching Kai's already injured ribs.
"STOP!" I screamed, but neither heard me over their snarls.
They fought with none of the coordination they'd shown in battle, this was pure rage, pure alpha dominance, two males fighting over territory they both claimed.
Kai landed a brutal hit to Theron's temple. Theron responded with a knee to Kai's wounded side, and I watched Kai's face go white with pain.
"ENOUGH!" Power exploded from me without conscious thought.
My hybrid form emerged in a burst of silver light, and I grabbed both Alphas by the throat, using Silvermane strength to physically rip them apart.
The shock of my transformation, the raw power of it, froze them both.
"You want to kill each other?" My voice was distorted, layered with wolf and fury. "Fine. But not in front of me. Not over me. I am not a prize to be won or territory to be fought over. I'm a person. A Luna. A wolf who just helped win a fucking battle while you both bled. And I will not watch you destroy each other because your egos can't handle complexity."
I released them, letting them stumble back, and forced my hybrid form to recede before it consumed me again.
"Theron kissed me," I said, my voice hoarse but steady. "I let him for maybe five seconds before I stopped it. That's the truth. And yes, part of me was tempted…not because I don't love Kai, but because I'm exhausted from fighting for scraps of trust and autonomy. But I stopped it. Because despite everything…the cell, the trial, the constant battle for control…I chose Kai. I choose him."
I turned to Kai, saw the devastation in his silver eyes.
"But I need you to choose me too. Not as something to own or protect or control. As your equal. Your partner. Your mate in truth, not just name." My voice cracked. "Because I can't keep fighting on two fronts…the war outside and the cage inside. One of them will kill me. Probably both."
Silence. Heavy. Charged with everything unsaid.
Then Kai stepped forward, and I saw him visibly force the wolf back, force himself to be human, vulnerable, honest.
"I don't know how to do that," he admitted, his voice raw. "I don't know how to stop seeing you as something that could be taken from me. How to trust that you're strong enough when every instinct screams that I need to protect you. How to..." He swallowed hard. "How to let go without losing you."
"Then learn." My hands found his face, holding him like he'd held me in that cell. "Or lose me anyway. Those are your options."
Behind me, Theron let out a long breath. "I'll leave you to figure this out. But Lia…my offer stands. When you're ready to stop settling for half-measures and emotional scraps, you know where to find me."
He left, closing the door quietly behind him.
Kai and I stood in the ruins of trust, surrounded by the scent of blood and violence, and stared at each other across a chasm that felt impossible to bridge.
"I felt you kiss him," Kai whispered. "Through the bond. Felt you consider it."
"I know."
"It nearly destroyed me."
"I know that too." I stepped closer. "Just like it nearly destroyed me when you locked me in that cell. When you chose control over trust. When you made me prove I was worth keeping instead of just... keeping me."
"I was scared."
"So was I. So am I. But fear doesn't excuse cruelty, Kai. It doesn't justify cages." My thumb traced his split lip. "We're breaking each other. And I don't know if love is supposed to feel like this."
"What does it feel like?"
"Like drowning while someone I love holds my head under water and begs me not to die."
The analogy hit him like a physical blow. I watched understanding dawn, real, painful understanding of what he'd been doing to us.
"I'm sorry," he breathed. "God, Lia, I'm so fucking sorry. For the cell, for the trial, for every moment I made you feel like you weren't enough. You're…" His voice broke. "You're everything. And I've been so terrified of losing you that I drove you straight into another man's arms."
"I don't want his arms." I pulled Kai against me despite his wounds, despite everything. "I want yours. I want this…us…but the real version. Where we trust each other. Where my power doesn't threaten you and your need to protect doesn't suffocate me."
"Can we get there from here?" His question was small, young, scared.
"I don't know. But I'm willing to try if you are."
Kai's answer came in the form of a kiss, desperate, possessive, but underneath it all, questioning. Asking permission where he'd taken before. Showing me the man beneath the Alpha, the vulnerable heart beneath all that armor.
I kissed him back, tasting blood and tears and hope so fragile it hurt.
"Take me to bed," I whispered against his mouth. "Not to fuck. Just to hold. Can you do that? Can you just... hold me?"
"Yes." The word was fervent, grateful. "Anything. Everything. Just don't leave me."
"Then don't give me a reason to."
We stumbled to his quarters, our quarters, and collapsed on the bed still filthy with blood and battle. But Kai pulled me against his chest and wrapped around me like he could shield me from the world with his body alone.
And for the first time since I'd returned from Silvercrest, the bond between us felt almost right. Still damaged, still healing, but present.
Alive.
Connected.
Outside, war waited. The Circle plotted. The Eastern Pack regrouped.
But for now, at this moment, we had each other.
And maybe that would be enough to survive what came next.
If we could learn to stop destroying each other long enough to face our real enemies together.
