Chapter 81: Echoes of a Truth

The night advanced with its relentless mantle of darkness as Vincent remained motionless in the same position Elena had left him. The letter rested in his right hand, crumpled by the unconscious pressure of his fingers, while his mind spun in a whirlwind of emotions: love, anger, confusion, and a faint glimmer of hope he couldn’t suppress.

The sound of waves crashing in the distance was his only companion in that improvised hideout. The flickering light of a lamp on the table dimly illuminated the space, casting unsettling shadows on the stone walls.

With a deep sigh, Vincent finally decided to open the letter. As he unfolded the paper, his heart pounded heavily. He recognized Elena’s delicate handwriting, the same one he had read so many times in old notes. Yet now, each letter felt like a dagger. Swallowing hard, he began to read.

“Vincent,

I know this letter will not be enough to answer all your questions. I know that reading it will probably make you feel more betrayed, more confused, but I need you to know the truth—or at least the part I can reveal to you for now.

I have always loved you, Vincent. From the moment our eyes first met, I knew there would be no other man for me. My love for you has never disappeared, not even when I had to make the hardest decision of my life: to walk away from you, from our daughters, and from everything that meant my happiness.

Do not think for even a second that I chose my safety over being with you. Leaving you was not an act of selfishness but of desperation. My heart broke into a thousand pieces the day I had to fake my own death, but I did it because I had no other choice.

Vincent, the enemies I faced, those I infiltrated to protect our family, discovered our existence. They threatened me with the most sacred thing: Clara and Shopia. They said if I didn’t cooperate, if I didn’t follow their orders, they would kill them. It was those threats that forced me to act.

I know you left with the belief that our daughters are not biologically ours. That lie hurts me more than I can express, but let me clarify something I should never have let you believe. Clara and Shopia are our daughters, Vincent. They always have been. There were no real exchanges at birth. It was all a façade, a desperate maneuver to deceive our enemies and save them.

First it was Clara, and then Shopia. I pretended to have switched them to protect them, to keep them away from the eyes of those who hunted us. But in my heart, they have always been yours and mine, and I could never have borne to truly separate them from us.

When we saw each other again after so long, everything inside me screamed to run to you, to tell you the truth, to hold you and never let go. But I couldn’t do it. The man who accompanied me, Daniel, is not who he claims to be. For years I believed he was my ally, someone who shared my fight, but I recently discovered he is an infiltrator, a pawn of the same enemies I swore to defeat.

I had to lie, Vincent. I had to say what I said in front of him to protect you, to protect our daughters. Every word that left my mouth was like a dagger to my own heart, but I couldn’t risk him suspecting my true feelings.

Now I’m trapped, Vincent. I’m at the center of a web of lies, threats, and betrayals. I can’t tell you everything yet, because doing so would endanger not only my life but yours and our daughters’ as well.

However, there is something you must know: I haven’t stopped fighting for us. Every day, every night, my only wish is to find a way out of this hell and return to your side. If one day I manage to free myself from the chains that bind me, I will come back. I will return to you, to Clara and Shopia, and then I will tell you everything.

For now, Vincent, I ask you to trust me one last time. I know I’ve given you a thousand reasons to hate me, but if there’s still something left of that love we shared, please keep it for me. I will need it to survive.

I love you more than words can express. I always have, and I always will.

With all my heart,

Elena”

Vincent let the letter fall onto the table, his chest rising and falling with irregular breaths. His hands trembled, and his mind struggled to process what he had just read. Were Clara and Shopia really his daughters?

Rage and sadness mixed within him, forming a whirlwind that threatened to consume him. He stood up abruptly, knocking over the chair behind him.

—Damn it, Elena! —he shouted, his voice echoing in the empty refuge.

But along with the fury came something else: hope. If Clara and Shopia were truly his daughters, then not everything was lost. Despite the lies, despite the years of separation, there was still a chance to reclaim his family.

However, the shadow of Daniel, the man who had been by Elena’s side all this time, deeply unsettled him. If he was an infiltrator, as she claimed, then the danger didn’t only threaten Elena but also him and the girls.

—Martin —Vincent called, his voice firm.

The man quickly appeared, his face alert.

—Sir?

—I want you to investigate everything about a man named Daniel. I want to know who he is, where he comes from, and most importantly, who he answers to.

Martin nodded immediately, understanding the urgency in his boss’s voice.

—Anything else, sir?

Vincent looked at the letter on the table, his dark eyes gleaming with renewed determination.

—Prepare a plan to get Elena out of where she is. I don’t care how much it costs or who we have to face. She’s part of this family, and I’m not going to lose her again.

Martin nodded before leaving, leaving Vincent alone with his thoughts.

As he sat back down in front of the letter, Vincent took it in his hands again, going over every word as if they were a map leading to the truth. For the first time in years, he felt there was a light, faint but real, at the end of the dark tunnel he had been trapped in.

—I’ll get you out, Elena —he whispered—. And when I do, I won’t let anyone separate us again.

Outside, the night continued its course, but in Vincent’s heart, a spark of hope began to ignite. He knew the path ahead would be dangerous, filled with obstacles and enemies, but he was willing to face it all to reclaim the woman he loved and the daughters he now knew were his.
