Chapter 80: The Return of the Truth

The night had fallen again, enveloping everything in its relentless darkness. The cool air from the beach caressed Elena's skin as she headed toward the place where Vincent was. She had decided to go to him, not because she thought her words would change anything, but because her heart could no longer remain silent, hiding what she felt. She needed him to know the truth, even if that truth was full of pain.

As she walked toward the hidden refuge, her thoughts tormented her. She had lied, hidden too many things, but she had done it out of love. The only reason that had kept her alive in that lie was the need to protect their daughters. Clara and Shopia could never know what was really happening, and Vincent... Vincent could never understand. Not at that moment.

The sound of the waves broke the stillness, as Elena finally reached the entrance to where Vincent was. She took a deep breath before entering, knowing that the words she had for Vincent would not be easy, but that it was time to say them. She couldn’t keep running.

Vincent was sitting at a table, staring at maps and documents with tired eyes. The tension in the air was palpable, and his mind kept going over everything that had happened. Elena had disappeared, and everything he had believed to know about her life had crumbled. Elena’s words, the revelations about their daughters... it was all a whirlwind of chaos in his mind.

Suddenly, the door opened. A soft sound alerted him, and he turned, finding Elena standing there, once again in front of him.

“What are you doing here?” he said, his voice harsh, still in disbelief at her presence.

Elena looked at him fixedly, her face illuminated only by the dim light of the refuge. Her eyes reflected a mix of desperation and determination.

“Vincent…” she began, her voice a whisper, afraid of what her words might bring. “I need you to listen.”

Vincent slowly stood up, his eyes fixed on her, searching for something, anything that could confirm what his heart still refused to accept.

“Listen to you?” he asked, disbelief in his voice. “And what are you going to tell me now, Elena? What more are you going to hide from me?”

Elena took a step forward, trembling slightly, but determined. She stopped before reaching him, as if simply being near him made her feel vulnerable.

“What I said before... everything I said... it’s not the truth. It wasn’t the truth. I lied to you, Vincent,” she admitted, her voice cracking as her eyes filled with tears.

Vincent furrowed his brow, unable to comprehend.

“What do you mean by that? Are you telling me that everything I found out, everything you told me, was a lie?”

Elena nodded, but it wasn’t a nod of confirmation, but of regret.

“Everything I did, everything I told you... it was to protect our daughters. Clara and Shopia... you don’t understand. I can’t explain it all now, but I did it to save them. I did it because the people who were chasing us couldn’t know the truth.”

Vincent didn’t know what to feel. Rage, pain, confusion... it all mixed in his chest. But deep down, something in her words sparked a glimmer of hope.

“Are you telling me that everything you told me about our daughters, about our family, was a lie just to protect them?” he said, his voice trembling between anger and relief.

Elena looked at him fixedly, as if trying to convey the impossible.

“Yes... but don’t misunderstand me, Vincent. It wasn’t for me. It was for them. Everything I’ve done has been for their sake, even if that meant staying away from you.”

Vincent took a step toward her, his gaze painful.

“Elena, why didn’t you tell me before? Why did you let me live with this lie?”

“Because I didn’t know how to explain it. Because I didn’t want to lose you, but I knew I couldn’t keep up the farce. What I feel for you... what I’ve always felt... hasn’t changed. It’s never changed, Vincent,” Elena whispered, slowly approaching.

Vincent closed his eyes, his pain about to overflow, but at the same time, there was something in her words that reached deep into his soul. He still loved her, and he knew it.

“What does all of this mean, Elena?” he asked, his voice cracking. “What will you do now?”

She took a deep breath and looked at him, knowing there was no turning back. She knew she had revealed the truth, but there was a price she was still not ready to pay.

“I’m going to go back to where it all began. I have to leave, Vincent… for them. But I want you to know that I love you. I never stopped loving you.”

Vincent looked at her, a whirlwind of emotions crossing his face. Without saying another word, she took a step back, heading for the door.

Before leaving, she stopped and looked at him one last time.

“Someday, when all of this is over, maybe you’ll understand why I did it. But for now, all I ask is that you trust me.”

And with those words, Elena disappeared into the darkness, leaving him with the feeling that the truth, though harsh, had begun to light his way.

Elena walked slowly toward the exit of the refuge, each step heavy as if the whole world had fallen on her shoulders. She couldn’t stay. She knew Vincent needed time to process what she had just revealed, but she also understood that her love, the one that still burned in her chest, could not be enough to erase the years of pain, the lies, the wounds.

Before leaving, she stopped at the entrance, her trembling hand searching for something in her coat pocket. She pulled out a letter, the paper wrinkled from the time it had been kept hidden. The letter was addressed to Vincent, and although the words it contained weren’t new, she felt they were the only ones she hadn’t yet said. She stared at it for a few seconds, as if looking for the exact words, but she knew that it didn’t matter how she left it written; what mattered was that he had it.

With a deep sigh, she walked over to where Vincent was still standing, beside the table, his face still full of confusion and pain.

“Vincent,” she said, her voice soft but firm. He lifted his gaze, surprised to see her so close again. “Before I leave, I want you to have this.”

She handed him the letter with trembling hands. Vincent took it without speaking, examining the paper, knowing that inside it was more than just words.

“It’s not a goodbye, here’s the truth,” she explained, her voice breaking slightly. “I need you to understand that what I did, I did for them. It wasn’t for me, it wasn’t for you. It was for Clara and Shopia. To protect them from all the evil that still chases us.”

Vincent held the letter, his eyes fixed on her, and although he wanted to shout, demand answers, something inside him urged patience. He knew that Elena had been his love, and that love was still there, despite everything. But he also knew that he needed the time she was giving him.

Elena took a step toward him, and at that moment, their gazes locked with the intensity of those who know they are about to make an irreversible decision.

“Vincent, I love you,” she said, her voice trembling as she spoke the words. He closed his eyes briefly, as if the mere mention of that love had left him breathless. Elena, unable to stop herself, embraced him briefly, letting her body feel the warmth of his presence, the only place where she had always found refuge. But what happened next was even more unexpected.

Elena pulled away slightly from him, her gaze soft but determined. Without saying anything else, she kissed him, a brief kiss but filled with everything she had kept inside for so long. A kiss full of regret, passion, a broken promise, and a love that, though it could never return, would never leave.

She slowly pulled away, letting their lips part for the last time. And in that moment, something in the air shifted. Elena knew it was the end, but she also understood that sometimes, endings were only the beginning of something else. Something that couldn’t be understood immediately, but perhaps, in time, would make sense.

“I will always love you, Vincent,” she whispered, looking into his eyes one last time. And then, without looking back, she turned and walked toward the door.

Vincent stood motionless, the letter in his hand, the taste of her kiss still on his lips. The pain of her departure overwhelmed him, but he couldn’t help but wonder if he would ever understand what had really led Elena to make this decision. All he knew was that, though she might leave, he would never stop loving her.

The sound of her footsteps faded into the distance, and with it, the last chance of a reunion. But Vincent would not move, not yet. He had the letter, and now he had the truth, or at least part of it.

The night continued its march, relentless, as he stayed there, in the refuge, holding onto the hope that someday, everything would fall into place.
