Chapter 73: In a Remote Place
Clara couldn't stop thinking about Marco. Every time her mind wandered into carefree thoughts, there he was, with his intense gaze and his smile that seemed to have the power to light up even the darkest corners of her soul. But despite the attraction she felt, Clara knew she wasn't ready to fall in love again. The scar from her failed relationship with Alex Morán was still too fresh, and although Marco seemed to be everything she needed, her heart remained captive to a past that wouldn't let her move forward.
She knew that what she'd lived with Alex had left a deep mark, something that wouldn't heal with time or the love of someone else. The betrayal, the lies, the violence he had unleashed in her life… all of that still weighed on her like an impossible-to-lift stone. And even though Marco was different, with him there was no darkness, no danger, Clara couldn't help but feel vulnerable. She couldn't allow someone else to hurt her, not after everything that had happened.

In a remote place, far from any trace of civilization, there was an ancient refuge submerged beneath the waters. A complex hidden deep in the ocean, with reinforced concrete walls and restricted access to only a few people in the world. The entrance was concealed by a network of underwater tunnels, camouflaged by currents and the rocks surrounding the coast. No one knew of its existence, or at least that’s what they all thought.
It was in this place, beneath the surface of the sea, where Elena, Clara and Shopia's mother, had been hidden for years. After the staged disappearance orchestrated by her company to protect her from the consequences of her life as a spy, Elena had found refuge in this remote hideaway. A place where she couldn't be reached by her enemies or the shadow of her dangerous past.
The submarine refuge wasn’t just designed to hide; it also ensured no one could easily find her. The advanced technology inside, encrypted communication systems, and strict security measures ensured that neither the government nor the criminal organizations hunting her could track her movements.
Although Elena had initially accepted this forced exile, she soon realized the magnitude of her decision. The isolation had been a heavy burden, a sentence that had separated her from her daughters, from her family. But the circumstances were clear: her life was in danger, and she had to protect the people she loved most. Sacrifice was inevitable.
In the first few months, she had sunk into despair, but over time, she got used to the solitude. However, she never stopped thinking about Clara and Shopia. Often, she found herself looking at old photos of them, wondering if they would ever uncover the truth, if she would ever see them again.
The letters she had left behind, those she wrote with all her heart, were not enough. She knew they would need answers, and she was ready to give them, but she couldn’t risk being found too soon.
On the other side of the world, Clara and Shopia were beginning to connect the dots, uncovering fragments of a hidden past. And although their mother’s fate seemed marked by shadows, the truth of her whereabouts was about to come to light.
Elena was prepared for whatever came, but the fear of what her daughters might discover had never left her. Time had passed, but her secrets remained hers, hidden in the depths of the ocean, where nothing and no one could reach her… for now.
Meanwhile, Clara was in her room, gazing at the horizon from the mansion’s window. The sun was beginning to set, painting the sky with shades of orange and pink, but her mind was far from the peace offered by the landscape. The uncertainty about her mother, the unanswered questions, it all weighed heavily on her chest. She knew something was about to happen, but she didn’t know what.
Suddenly, the sound of her phone interrupted her thoughts. Clara picked it up quickly and saw that she had a new message. It was from an unknown number, but something deep inside told her she shouldn’t ignore it. With a mix of curiosity and distrust, she opened the message.
“I know where your mother is. If you want to know the truth, come alone to the old café on 24th Street. I’ll be waiting for you at 7:00 PM. Don’t be late.”
Clara’s heart skipped a beat. She didn’t need to look at the sender’s name to know who it was. Alex Morán. The man who had been part of her life in a dark and painful chapter. The same man she had tried to forget for years.
Anguish and uncertainty enveloped her as she read the message over and over again. How could he know where her mother was? And why now, after all this time, did he want to talk to her? The last thing she needed in her life was to get involved with Alex again, but the mention of her mother, the only concrete lead she had received in a long time, made her hesitate.
Clara closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and thought about her sister, Shopia, and what they had uncovered about their mother’s truth. She knew she couldn’t ignore this call, even though her heart warned her that this meeting could bring a world of trouble.
With determination, she typed a brief reply.
“I’ll be there.”
That same afternoon, Clara prepared for what could be the most important meeting of her life. She didn’t want anyone to accompany her; she felt that she needed to face this alone. She grabbed her coat and headed to the old café. The city, though full of life, seemed deserted that afternoon. Clara walked quickly, a mix of nervousness and determination coursing through her, not knowing whether she should trust what Alex Morán had written to her or if she was simply walking into dangerous territory.
When she arrived at the café, she saw that it was empty, except for a figure sitting at one of the tables in the corner. Alex Morán. He was there, as always, with his elegant demeanor and deep gaze. Clara felt a pang of discomfort upon seeing him, but she didn’t show any sign of weakness. She walked toward the table without hesitation.
When he looked up and their eyes met, a strange silence filled the air. Clara sat down across from him, not saying a word at first. Time seemed to stand still, and everything that had happened between them seemed to float in the air, as if it had never occurred.
Finally, Alex broke the silence with his deep, calm voice.
"You know I haven't been a good person, Clara. And maybe I don't deserve for you to listen to me. But what I'm going to tell you about your mother could change everything you thought you knew." He paused, watching her reaction. "She's alive. And she's closer than you think."
Clara felt her heart race. Alex’s words shook her, but she couldn't let herself be carried away by her emotions. She needed more than empty promises.
"Why are you telling me this?" Clara asked, her voice trembling but firm. She didn’t want to seem vulnerable, but the mention of her mother was too much to ignore.
"Because I know you care." Alex looked at her intensely. "And because I know that, even though you hate me, I owe you an explanation."
Clara studied him for a moment, weighing his words, trying to read his intentions. Part of her wanted to believe him, but she also knew that trusting him was a risk too great to take.
"What do you know? Where is my mother?" she asked, with a mix of desperation and distrust in her voice.
Alex sighed, as if he was about to reveal a secret that would change everything. Then, he leaned toward her and whispered.
"She's in a secret place. It's not somewhere just anyone could find. But I know where she is. And I can take you there. But first, you need to understand something. Your mother isn’t the woman you think she was. Her life is filled with shadows. And I can't tell you everything now. I can only offer you a clue: she was in the same place as you, searching for answers."
Clara felt as if the ground were crumbling beneath her feet. Everything she had believed up until now was in doubt, but she couldn’t stop listening. The mystery of her mother, the hidden truth, it was all finally within reach.
"Why are you doing this?" Clara asked, though deep down, she already knew the answer wouldn't be simple.
Alex stared at her, and for a moment, he seemed to struggle with his own emotions.
"Because, Clara, there’s something I’ve never told you. Something that involves your father, my family, and your mother. But that... that will have to wait."
Clara swallowed, feeling like her world was crumbling, but at the same time, something inside her told her that she had to move forward. She had to know the truth. She had to know where her mother was. And Alex Morán, though she never would have expected it, might be the key to finding her.
