Chapter 72: An Unexpected Encounter
Clara adjusted her coat as she helped Shopia out of the car in front of her sister's grand mansion. The night was cool, and a light breeze rustled the trees nearby. The lights of the main entrance illuminated the path, and the sound of her heels echoed on the pavement. Clara couldn't stop thinking about everything they had discussed with their father, but she tried to set those thoughts aside as she said goodbye to her sister.
"Are you sure you'll be okay?" Clara asked, placing a hand on her shoulder.
Shopia nodded with a calm smile. "Yes, I'll be fine. You need to rest too, Clara. You've done so much for me today."
Just as Clara was about to turn back to the car, the mansion's main door opened, and a tall figure stepped out. It was Marco, Anthony's assistant. With his perfectly tailored suit and neatly combed-back hair, he had an imposing yet serene presence.
"Miss Shopia, good evening. Mr. Anthony asked me to make sure you arrived safely." His voice was deep and polite, but there was a warmth in his eyes that didn't go unnoticed by Clara.
Shopia thanked him with a nod as she walked past him into the mansion, but Clara stayed where she was, eyeing the man who now approached her.
"And who might you be?" Clara asked, more out of curiosity than suspicion, though there was a hint of challenge in her tone.
Marco smiled, a gesture that seemed to light up the night.
"Marco Kelp, Mr. Anthony's personal assistant. And you must be Shopia's sister. Clara, correct?"
Clara raised an eyebrow, surprised that he knew her name, but at the same time, she felt an odd warmth at the sound of his voice.
"I see you're well-informed, Mr. Kelp," she replied with a slight smile, crossing her arms.
Marco tilted his head slightly, as if analyzing every detail of her face.
"It’s part of my job, but I admit I didn't expect to meet someone so charming."
Clara felt her cheeks flush. She wasn’t used to someone being so direct with her, especially someone with Marco’s presence.
"Well, I’m not sure ‘charming’ is the right word," she replied, trying to maintain her composure.
"Then let me be the judge of that," Marco said with a smile that completely disarmed her.
For a few seconds, they stood in silence, just looking at each other. There was an undeniable spark between them, an unexpected connection neither could ignore. Clara broke the silence with a small cough.
"It’s late. I should head home."
Marco stepped closer but kept enough distance to avoid intruding on her space.
"Allow me to escort you to your car."
Clara hesitated for a moment but nodded. As they walked together toward the vehicle, she couldn’t help but feel intrigued by him. There was something in the way he moved, in the confidence with which he spoke, that drew her in.
When they reached the car, Marco opened the driver’s door and waited as she settled into the seat.
"Thank you for your kindness, Mr. Kelp," Clara said, looking into his dark, deep eyes.
"Please, call me Marco," he replied, leaning slightly to meet her gaze. "I hope we’ll have the chance to meet again, Clara."
Clara couldn’t help but smile.
"Perhaps. Goodnight, Marco."
He closed the door gently and stepped back as she started the engine. As she drove away, Clara found herself thinking about him, about that spark she had felt, and she wondered how dangerous that unexpected connection might be.
Clara drove back to her mansion, but her mind was far from the road. The memory of Marco, with his calm yet intense presence, lingered in her thoughts. Every word, every look, seemed to have left a mark on her, something she couldn’t ignore.
"It’s just another man," she thought, trying to convince herself. But the truth was, Marco wasn’t like any other man she had ever met. There was something about him—a mix of mystery and confidence—that awakened an unusual curiosity in her.
When she arrived home, Clara turned off the car and sat for a few minutes, watching the shadows cast by the trees at the entrance. She took a deep breath, trying to shake off the whirlwind of emotions that had started to stir. Finally, she stepped out of the car and entered the mansion, leaving the night behind—but not her thoughts about Marco.
Meanwhile, Marco remained at the entrance of Shopia’s mansion. He could still feel the energy of his brief conversation with Clara. He had seen many people come and go from the Mancini family’s lives, but Clara was different. There was a strength in her, a fire that couldn’t go unnoticed.
As he walked back inside, he found Shopia, who looked at him with a smile that seemed to hold endless questions.
"And?" she asked, raising an eyebrow as she cradled her baby, who was peacefully sleeping in her arms.
"And what?" Marco replied, feigning indifference as he walked toward the living room.
"Don’t play dumb. I saw how you looked at my sister."
Marco stopped and looked at her with a slight smile.
"Clara is an interesting woman, that’s all."
"Interesting?" Shopia repeated, amused. "Marco, my sister is much more than interesting, and if you plan to get close to her, you’d better be careful."
Marco frowned, surprised by her warning.
"Why do you say that?"
Shopia sighed, placing the baby in a nearby crib before sitting on the couch.
"Clara has been through a lot. Trust isn’t something she gives easily, and if someone hurts her..." Shopia looked at him directly, her tone serious. "Well, I wouldn’t want to be in that person’s shoes."
Marco nodded, understanding her message.
"I have no intention of hurting her."
"I hope not," Shopia replied, relaxing a bit. "But if you decide to get close to her, you should know there’s a price to pay when getting involved with anyone in our family."
Marco let out a soft laugh.
"I wouldn’t expect anything less."
As Shopia settled into the couch, Marco looked out the window into the night. Though he didn’t want to admit it, he knew there was something about Clara that had caught him, something that made him want to uncover every one of her secrets—even if it led him down a dangerous path.
And for Clara, though she tried to ignore it, that encounter with Marco had marked the beginning of something that would soon change her life.
