The private question
The private question
Lucien, though his face remained carefully composed, approached Darius with a controlled, almost glacial politeness. His smile was a thin, tight line.
“My congratulations, brother,” Lucien drawled, his voice silky, but with an underlying current of bitter disappointment. He offered Darius a cool, brief clasp of the forearm. “A surprising choice, but then, Princess Seraphina has proven herself full of surprises, has she not? Make the most of it, Darius. The night is long.”
His eyes flickered to Seraphina, a silent promise of future retribution. He, too, radiated an intense jealousy, thinly veiled by courtly manners.
Darius merely inclined his head to both of them, his expression once more unreadable, his composure re-established. He accepted their thinly veiled barbs and forced congratulations with stoic grace. He offered no triumphant grin, no smug satisfaction. He simply met their gazes with quiet resolve, acknowledging his win without boasting.
Later, much later, after the hall had emptied and the palace had settled into the quiet hum of night, Seraphina was led to a lavish suite of rooms, presumably hers for the night. The maids quickly prepared her for bed, dressing her in a silken robe of deep blue, soft against her skin. Just as they were about to leave, a knock came at the outer door.
A quiet voice announced, “My Lord Darius.”
The maids curtsied quickly, then scurried out, leaving Seraphina alone in the dimly lit chambers. She turned, her heart giving a nervous flutter, to see Darius enter. He was no longer in his formal attire, but clad in a simple, dark tunic and trousers, his powerful form outlined by the soft lamplight. He seemed even more imposing in the intimacy of the room.
He closed the door behind him, the soft click echoing in the sudden silence. His dark eyes, serious and searching, met hers. He didn’t approach immediately, merely stood a few feet from the door, observing her.
“Princess,” Darius began, his voice low, his usual calmness imbued with a new, quiet intensity. “I must confess, your choice tonight was… unexpected. Even to me.” He paused, his gaze unwavering, allowing the truth of his surprise to hang in the air. He privately asks why she chose him. “The others, perhaps, presented themselves as more obvious selections. Cassian with his strength, Lucien with his charm. Yet you chose me. Why?”
There was no accusation in his tone, only genuine curiosity, a desire to understand the logic behind her unprecedented decision.
Seraphina’s lips curved into a small, mysterious smile. She moved gracefully towards a plush velvet chaise, taking a seat, inviting him to join her without words.
“My Lord Darius,” she began, her voice soft, almost a murmur, yet clear in the quiet room. Her eyes, luminous in the dim light, met his with an unsettling sincerity. “It is true, the others are… compelling in their own ways.” She paused, allowing the weight of her words to settle.
Then, her smile widened, a touch of genuine warmth entering her eyes, a calculated performance of vulnerability and connection. “But with you, My Lord,” she continued, her voice deepening slightly, imbued with a delicate emotion, “I feel… different. Safer, perhaps. After today, after the falls, after… everything, I felt a peculiar sense of calm, a sense of quiet strength emanating from you.” She leaned forward slightly, her gaze earnest. “The others are like raging fires, easily seen, easily provoked. But you… you are like the deep, silent mountains themselves. Unmoving. Unbreakable. And in that, My Lord,” she whispered, her voice laced with profound admiration, “I feel connected with him. A deep, unspoken understanding. A sense of… belonging, perhaps, that I have not found elsewhere.”
Darius listened, his expression unchanged. He watched her face, her expressive eyes, the subtle shift in her voice. He saw the genuine-seeming warmth, the carefully crafted admiration, the subtle manipulation. He knew she was lying. He knew this ‘connection’ was a fabrication, a calculated move to further her own agenda, whatever it might be.
He understood the game she played. He had seen it in her eyes earlier, when she chose him, when she smiled as Elira fell. He knew she was playing him, just as she played the others.
But for some reason, for the first time, he didn’t mind. Perhaps it was the sheer audacity of her lies, the skill with which she wove them. Perhaps it was the tantalizing glimpse of vulnerability he’d seen at the falls, the spark of genuine reaction she’d shown in his carriage. Perhaps it was simply the challenge she presented, a puzzle he found himself unexpectedly eager to solve.
He took a slow step towards her, then another, until he stood directly before the chaise. His dark eyes, though still knowing, softened infinitesimally, a subtle shift that only Seraphina, acutely attuned to him, might perceive. He lifted his hand, slowly, deliberately, and reached out.
His large, warm hand cupped her face, his thumb gently caressing her cheekbone. His touch was firm, yet surprisingly tender, sending a soft shiver through her. His gaze, deep and unwavering, held hers, a silent communication passing between them, an acknowledgment of the unspoken truths and the intricate web of lies.
“Princess Seraphina,” Darius murmured, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that vibrated through her, utterly devoid of the demand for truth, instead accepting her carefully constructed fiction. He played along, allowing the lie to stand, to serve its purpose for now. His thumb continued its slow, hypnotic stroke against her skin. “You chose well tonight. A wise decision. I assure you, you will not regret it.”
His gaze dropped to her lips, lingering there for a long, heavy moment, a silent promise in their depths. Then, his eyes rose again, burning into hers, a new, possessive fire now alight within them.
“Now,” he said, his voice dropping to a sensual whisper, a raw command veiled in velvet, “get ready, little Omega. The night will truly be ours.”
He released her face, his hand withdrawing, leaving her tingling, breathless, and utterly, wonderfully stunned by his boldness. He hadn't just played along; he had taken control, subtly, powerfully, turning her cunning choice into his own undeniable claim.
The game had just begun, and Seraphina realized, with a thrilling jolt, that Darius was a far more formidable, and far more exciting, opponent than she had ever anticipated.
