A choice made

A choice made
The air in the Great Hall crackled with a tension that was almost suffocating. The grand feasting table had been cleared, and the three Northern Kings, along with the gathered court, stood in expectant silence. Torches flickered, casting long, dancing shadows that played across the stern faces of the warriors and the expectant, whispering countenances of the noblewomen.

Tonight was the night. The night the Omega Bride, Seraphina, would make her choice. Her selection for the first night, a symbolic gesture, would set the tone for the coming weeks and reveal the tentative leanings of the alliance.

Seraphina stood before them, bathed in the warm glow of the hearth fire, a vision in a gown of deep emerald green velvet that shimmered as she moved. Her hair, intricately braided with silver ribbons, gleamed like polished obsidian.

Her face was a study in serene composure, revealing nothing of the whirlwind of calculation and anticipation churning within her. She met the expectant gazes of the three Alphas—Cassian, Lucien, and Darius—each a formidable force in his own right, each radiating a distinct aura of power and desire.

Cassian stood with his broad shoulders thrown back, his chest puffed out, an almost insolent confidence in his golden eyes. He had saved her from the falls, he had defended her honor against Elira, and he had claimed her as ‘his queen’ only hours ago. He fully expected her to choose him, to cement his perceived dominance. He even offered a small, possessive grin, a silent reminder of his strength and his protection.

Lucien stood opposite him, his usual languid grace replaced by a subtle, coiled tension. His emerald eyes, sharp and assessing, never left Seraphina’s face. He had orchestrated her arrival, revealed Elira’s treachery, and positioned himself as the clever, sophisticated choice. He believed her rational mind would favor him. He offered a faint, knowing smirk, a silent promise of deeper pleasures and intellectual parity.

Darius stood slightly apart from the other two, his posture as impassive as ever. His dark eyes, however, were fixed on Seraphina, unblinking, unreadable. He had caught her, saved her from the falls, and offered her sanctuary in his carriage. He had even, for a fleeting moment, betrayed a flicker of human reaction.

Yet, his outward demeanor remained utterly calm, a fortress of composure. Internally, he was thinking she won’t pick him. He knew he was not the obvious choice. He lacked Cassian’s overt charisma and Lucien’s charming guile. He rarely engaged in the petty power plays, preferring quiet observation and strategic calculation. He was the least likely to win a bride’s immediate favor, especially one as seemingly delicate and politically astute as Seraphina. He expected her to choose one of the others, the two who had so passionately fought over her.

The High Priestess, an ancient woman with eyes like polished stones, stepped forward, her voice a low drone that echoed in the silent hall. “Princess Seraphina, the time has come. By ancient tradition, you shall choose the Alpha of your first night. Step forward and name him.”

Seraphina took a deep breath, her gaze sweeping over the expectant faces. She allowed her eyes to linger, briefly, on Cassian’s eager countenance, then on Lucien’s intense, hopeful gaze. The tension mounted, a palpable hum in the air. This was her moment. Her true game began now.

Then, slowly, deliberately, she turned her head. Her gaze bypassed both Cassian and Lucien entirely. Her silver eyes, alight with a sudden, startling warmth, settled directly on Darius.

A collective gasp rippled through the hall. Cassian’s confident grin vanished, replaced by a thunderous scowl. Lucien’s elegant features tightened, his jaw clenching, his eyes narrowing to angry slits.

Seraphina’s voice, when it finally came, was clear, resonant, and utterly unexpected. It carried through the stunned silence, striking each Alpha like a physical blow.

“My Lords,” she declared, her gaze locked firmly on Darius, “for my first night, I choose… My Lord Darius.”

Darius, for the first time in Seraphina’s observation, reacted with something other than perfect composure. His eyes, fixed on hers, widened momentarily. A flicker of genuine, unfeigned stunned surprise flashed across his face, quickly masked, but there nonetheless. His breath, usually so controlled, hitched for a fraction of a second. He was momentarily, truly, caught off guard. His internal conviction had been utterly, spectacularly wrong.

The High Priestess, though taken aback, recovered swiftly. “So be it!” she intoned, her voice echoing the choice. “The will of the Omega is spoken!”

A strange, strained silence followed, broken only by the nervous shuffling of feet. Then, Cassian, ever the pragmatist, forced a booming laugh, though it sounded hollow, devoid of true mirth. He strode forward, his anger barely concealed beneath a thin veneer of forced congratulations.

“Hah! A wise choice, Princess!” Cassian boomed, his voice unnaturally loud. He clapped Darius on the shoulder, a heavy, almost painful blow that spoke volumes of his barely suppressed fury. “Darius, my friend! Who would have thought the quiet wolf would catch the prize first? Enjoy your night! May it be… memorable!”

The last word was laden with a crude, competitive suggestion. He cast a sharp, resentful glance at Seraphina before retreating, his massive frame radiating palpable jealousy.
