The Price of Silence
The Price of Silence
The news spread like fire under the wind. Influential wolves from distant territories were already murmuring among themselves about Rhaek’s accident. Some spoke of it as punishment from the gods, others as the consequence of an Alpha who had always carried too much weight on his shoulders. It didn’t take long before the news crossed borders and reached Morocco, to Kalil’s ears.
He was in his glass office, at the top of one of his company’s towers, when an old ally brought the words:
"The Alpha of the Vorn fights against death. The accident was grave. They say he is in a coma, with no signs of improvement."
Kalil remained silent for a few seconds, just staring at the city below him. Marrakesh shone with its golden lights, a living mosaic, a territory he had conquered without having to carry the Vorn name.
But inside him, something stirred. It was not sadness, nor relief. It was an old, unresolved emptiness, a broken mirror that always reminded him of how he had been treated. Bastard. The son who had never been given a place of honor, who had always lived in the shadow of legitimate blood.
Zarah entered soon after, her steps firm, bringing with her the cold elegance that was natural to her. Upon hearing the news, she raised only one eyebrow.
"So the great Alpha may not survive," she said, dryly. "I see destiny has its own sense of justice."
Kalil swirled the glass of wine in his hand, watching the red liquid reflect the city lights. He did not cry, he did not suffer. But within him there was a strange flame. Something that made him want to react—not to be at his half-brother’s side, but to touch the heart of the one who had always represented his opposite.
"He is blood of my blood…" he murmured, thoughtful. "But he is not my brother. He never was. I was never offered that place."
"Then don’t go after him," Zarah added, sitting down across from him. "Don’t humiliate yourself before those who always despised you. To burn yourself for a family that never welcomed you would be foolishness."
Kalil nodded, but his eyes gleamed with something darker. He did not seek comfort, nor reconciliation. He sought power, dominion, and above all, to wound Narelle.
He picked up his phone, typed slowly, each word chosen like a blade:
"I heard of your Alpha’s misfortune. I feel a little for the situation, though I know I shouldn’t. Should you lose him, Narelle, do not despair. Come to Morocco. You may find solace in my arms—perhaps even become my omega of distraction."
He sent the message without hesitation. A cynical smile spread across his lips.
"With a single phrase… I dethrone Narelle," he murmured to himself, almost satisfied.
Zarah, who was reading over his shoulder, let out a short laugh. "You are not Kael… but you are dangerously alike in malice."
When Narelle’s phone vibrated in the silence of the hospital, she expected medical news, perhaps an update. But upon reading Kalil’s words, her heart froze. Blood rushed to her face, yet she did not reply. She only locked the screen, closing her eyes.
The venom of the message struck her, but her choice was clear: silence would be her only answer.
She remained by Rhaek’s side, her hand clasped to his, not allowing rancor to distract her.
The following days were torture. Doctors came, doctors went, but Rhaek’s condition did not evolve. It was as if he were trapped between worlds: not alive enough to return, not dead enough to be freed.
At every dawn, Narelle raised her tired eyes to the monitors, silently begging for any change. Luxor maintained firmness, controlling the younger siblings, but even he carried the weight of fear.
Narelle, however, bore within herself the worst torment of all: guilt.
One night, when the hospital corridors were silent and the children had been taken to rest, she remained alone with him. Only the sound of the machines filled the room, along with the faint scent of alcohol and medicine.
She held his hand, cold, motionless. Her eyes filled with tears she had until then managed to hold back.
"Rhaek…" she began in a low voice, almost a whisper. "If you hear me, please… forgive me."
She drew a deep breath, her heart burning.
"From the beginning… from the moment I was taken to live in the pack… I always loved you. I always desired you as my Alpha. There wasn’t a single day that I didn’t feel you inside me, even when we fought, even when we hurt each other. You were always the center of my life."
The tears rolled down, falling onto his hand.
"I was wrong. I was wrong for loving too much, for feeling so small so many times. For letting fear dominate me. I hid behind harsh words, behind parties, behind silences… when all I wanted was to be in your arms."
She brought his hand to her face, closing her eyes.
"I thought of giving up so many times… I thought of hating you. But I never could. Because I am yours. I always was. From the first day. My heart… my body… my soul… everything belongs to you, Rhaek. Even when I wanted to fool myself… even when I tried to run away. I am your wolf. I always was."
Her voice broke, but she went on.
"If you come back to me… I promise I won’t run anymore. I won’t let fear destroy us. I only want you to return. It doesn’t matter how. Just come back. Come back to me, to our children, to the pack… come back to our love."
Narelle fell silent, sobbing softly, pressing his hand to her chest.
And in that space between worlds, where Rhaek was trapped, he heard. Not with his ears, but with his soul. His memories lit up in flashes: her gaze at their first meeting, the furtive touch of the first night, the arguments that ended in desire, the life they built together.
Within him, a strength arose. He could not move, could not open his eyes, but he forgave. He forgave every harsh word, every silence, every wound. Because Narelle’s love was real, it always had been.
Deep in his consciousness, Rhaek replied in silence:
"I love you too. I forgive you too. And I will return."
But on the outside, his body remained motionless, breathing through wires and machines, leaving only hope to sustain the she-wolf who wept at his side.
That night, while the city slept, Narelle finally opened her whole heart—without masks, without defenses. And even if the world believed he could not hear, Rhaek received every word, engraving them into his spirit.
Time would still be cruel. The road to recovery would be long, uncertain. But that night, something changed. Not in the machines, not in the exams, but in the invisible bond between them.
The she-wolf had spoken. The Alpha had listened.
And love, at last, began to heal what pride had destroyed.
