The Provocation
The Provocation
The company’s headquarters felt different. Narelle’s return had transformed the heavy atmosphere of the last few months into something vibrant. Employees were smiling again in the corridors, numbers were beginning to recover, and her presence radiated the same strength that, years ago, had made Rhaek proud to have her as a partner.
He watched her from a distance, seated in the meeting room, while she presented strategies to investors. Her firm tone, the clarity of her ideas, and her impeccable posture reminded him why she had always been irreplaceable. But behind that professional façade, there was something that disturbed him: Narelle no longer looked at him as her husband. To her, Rhaek was only the partner, the pack leader, the name on the signature.
That night, at home, the silence weighed heavily. Narelle walked around the bedroom with a towel wrapped around her body after her bath. Rhaek pretended to read reports in the armchair, but his eyes betrayed him. He followed her every movement—the drop of water sliding down her legs, the way the towel clung to her damp skin.
When she bent down to pick something up from the floor, the towel slipped slightly, revealing a glimpse of her curves. Rhaek closed his eyes, biting his tongue to keep from betraying himself. He felt his blood boil, his breathing grow heavy, and when he realized he couldn’t bear it any longer, he went to the bathroom.
The sound of the shower concealed his muffled groans, his hand sliding along his shaft as his mind burned with images of her. But fate, cruel as ever, played a trick on him: Narelle entered the bathroom silently to grab her cream from the cabinet. She caught him, eyes fixed, while he whispered her name.
She said nothing. She only raised na eyebrow, letting the towel slip to the floor as if it were the most natural gesture. She turned her back, completely naked, and took the bottle of cream. The silence was deafening. Rhaek felt himself losing his mind.
“You do this on purpose…” he muttered, but Narelle left without responding.
Days later, at the company, they attended na investors’ party together. Narelle wore a tight red dress, the neckline daring, her lipstick intense. Rhaek watched her as if every man approaching her were a declared rival.
“Don’t you think you’re exaggerating with the makeup?” he whispered low, while she smiled at a group of businessmen.
“Exaggerating?” Narelle turned, lifting her champagne glass. “I’m only showing who really runs things.”
The words hit him like a punch. He recognized that fire. It was the Narelle from before, but now he no longer had control over her.
When one of the investors dared to kiss her hand for too long, Rhaek felt jealousy explode. He feigned naturality, but inside he wanted to drag the man away. Narelle noticed. She smirked, satisfied with the effect.
On the way home, silence was a weapon. She adjusted her dress on the seat, leaving her thigh exposed. He drove tensely, his fingers gripping the steering wheel, forcing himself not to look lest he lose control.
The provocations continued.
One morning, Rhaek entered the bedroom and found her in front of the mirror, slowly applying lipstick as if savoring the act. The short dress revealed her silhouette with no modesty.
“You’re going out like that?” he asked, dry.
“Like what?” she feigned innocence, but the smile at the corner of her lips betrayed the game.
Rhaek swallowed hard, knowing that the more he showed discomfort, the more pleasure she would take from it.
Another night, after her shower, Narelle deliberately let the towel fall. She walked naked through the bedroom as if he were invisible. Rhaek froze on the bed, eyes hungry, but he didn’t move a muscle.
A few days later…
The invitation to one of the company partner’s weddings arrived on a sunny morning. Narelle, standing before the mirror, tried on a dark-blue silk dress. The elegant cut shaped her waist, and the subtle shine highlighted her eyes. While adjusting her necklace, Kira asked:
“Mom, aren’t you taking Dad?”
She hesitated for just a moment. “He doesn’t like these parties, dear. He prefers business.”
Kira watched in silence. She knew it was only a half-truth.
Narelle left alone. Upon arriving at the venue, the atmosphere was pure celebration: white flowers, live music, champagne served in fine glasses. Many eyes fell on her, admiring her impeccable poise. She walked like a queen, confident, with no need for na escort.
But deep down, a pang of emptiness crossed her. Still, she kept a smile on her face, greeting guests, drinking moderately, dancing a few rounds.
That was when she felt it. The firm hand discreetly seizing her arm, almost imperceptibly, but charged with authority. The woody scent gave him away. Rhaek was there.
“Came without calling me?” he murmured, leaning close to her so that no one would notice.
Narelle slowly turned, her gaze icy. “I didn’t think you would care.”
“So this is it?” he pressed, his voice low but laced with venom. “No husband in bed, and no husband at parties either? Very well… from now on you’ll always go out alone.”
She lifted her chin, a sarcastic smile playing on her lips, one only he could decipher. “Then do that, Rhaek. Make my path easier.”
He couldn’t bear it. He pulled her into a discreet corner of the garden, where the party lights did not reach. His breathing was heavy, filled with a mix of anger and desire.
“You know what I plan right now?” he said, biting out the words. “To take you into some restroom and fuck you until you remember who your husband is.”
The slap came before he finished the sentence. A dry, quick crack, but precise. His face burned, not only from the pain but from the shame.
“Don’t you dare treat me like some whore, Rhaek.” Her voice was firm, cutting. “If you want prostitutes, they’re scattered throughout the city, even inside your company. But I’m not part of that list.”
Rhaek drew in a deep breath, his pride wounded. “You’re willing to humiliate me at a party?”
“I don’t need to humiliate you, Rhaek. You do that on your own.” Narelle adjusted her dress and looked at him with a serenity that unsettled him. “From today on, I won’t care anymore who you fuck at the company, at home, or anywhere else. I give you up, definitively. The marriage, the bonds, the bed. It’s all yours. The company will be in your hands and those of your mistresses.”
His eyes widened, as if the ground had been ripped out from under him. “You can’t just walk away like this… as if it were just another party.”
“I can. And I will.” Her firmness didn’t waver. “First, I’ll speak to our children. Then, I’ll make my decisions. But don’t think you can hold me back with promises of sex or with your late jealousy.”
Rhaek stood frozen, his breathing faltering. For na instant, he thought about seizing her right there, but he restrained himself. His wounded pride consumed him more than desire ever could.
Narelle turned her back and returned to the hall with her impeccable posture, as if nothing had happened. Her bluish-red lipstick intact, her calculated smile, the untouchable queen.
Rhaek, in turn, slipped out through the side doors, his heart heavy, fists clenched. He had no strength to face the stares or to pretend normality.
He walked through the streets until he found a discreet bar. He ordered whiskey. Then another. And another. The night swallowed him in the bitterness of alcohol.
Between sips and memories, the image of Narelle—firm, cold, decided—repeated itself as punishment. The sting of her slap still burned on his skin, but what hurt the most was the realization that perhaps he had already lost her.
Sitting at the counter, with the bottle nearly empty, Rhaek felt the weight of all the years, all the choices, and above all, the cruelty he once thought was strength. Now, for the first time, he understood
that the power he believed he possessed had never been his. It had always been hers.
