Chapter 331 Two-faced Jerk
Chapter 331 Two-faced Jerk
"Mrs. Cavendish." Lucas held a gift in his hand and greeted her politely.
"Mr. Lucas, you're here."
Harper actually didn't want Lucas showing up at this moment.
After all, today her daughter's family was having such a nice time together.
Lucas coming here was like an intruder, killing the mood completely!
But he was the children's biological father, so she couldn't just kick him out. She had no choice but to let him in.
Lucas entered and swept his gaze around the room, pausing for two seconds on Xandra's face before smiling and calling out, "Chuck, Beth, Maggie, look what I brought you!"
"Daddy!"
Elizabeth and Margaret ran over happily when they saw him, asking him all sorts of questions affectionately.
Xandra watched this and instinctively glanced at Frederick.
His expression was calm as he sipped his coffee, his face giving nothing away.
Xandra pressed her lips together lightly and reached out to gently hold his hand.
Frederick paused mid-sip and looked at her.
Meeting her clear gaze, he smiled silently and wrapped his hand around hers.
The two were intimate and natural, showing the kind of understanding between husband and wife.
Lucas looked up and caught this scene.
His gaze swept over their clasped hands, his smile stiffening as his hand unconsciously clenched.
"Ow, Daddy, you're hurting me."
Beth, whose hand he was holding, felt the pain and immediately frowned.
Hearing this, Lucas snapped back to reality and quickly let go.
"Sorry, Daddy didn't mean to. Want Daddy to make it better?"
"It's okay, it doesn't hurt."
At the dining table, Rachel had been watching everyone's interactions.
Was Lucas feeling stung by her son and daughter-in-law?
Wasn't he asking for it?
Knowing they were coming back today, he still came here to make himself uncomfortable?
Though she looked down on this in her heart, as an elder, she still politely offered, "Lucas, have you eaten? Want to join us for a bit?"
"Sure, Aunt Rachel."
Lucas walked to the dining table, greeted Xandra and Frederick, then sat down next to Beth and Maggie.
"I bought some breakfast the kids love. Aunt Rachel, want to try some?"
"No thanks, I prefer the breakfast Harper makes, fresh and healthy," Rachel said.
This was clearly implying that the breakfast Lucas bought outside wasn't healthy.
Lucas smiled and placed three bowls of chicken porridge in front of the three children.
"I had the chef at The Chef's Loft make these specially. The ingredients are very fresh, and the kids love them."
Then he looked at Xandra and Frederick. "Xandy, Fred, want some?"
Frederick looked up, meeting Lucas's smiling eyes. Instead of answering the question, he said, "Lucas, since you know I'm your older brother, what should you call my wife?"
His tone was calm but carried a hint of coldness.
The atmosphere instantly froze.
Beth, who had been reaching for a pastry, glanced at Frederick and quietly withdrew her hand.
Lucas smiled. "It's just a nickname. No need to make such a big deal out of it. Don't scare the children."
Frederick's face showed no smile. "It's precisely because the children are here that proper manners matter even more. You wouldn't want people gossiping that they have no manners, would you?"
Lucas looked at him for two seconds without saying anything.
The atmosphere became tense.
Their eyes met, as if invisible sparks were flying.
Harper's heart rose to her throat, afraid they would start arguing in front of the children. She quickly tried to smooth things over.
"The children must be hungry. Let's eat breakfast first. Whatever needs to be discussed can wait until after."
Lucas's face regained its gentle smile. "Alright, whatever you say, Mrs. Cavendish."
His manner was refined and elegant, making him seem more likeable compared to the aloof Frederick.
The usually composed Charles didn't seem to feel much about it.
After all, he had the same personality as Frederick.
But Elizabeth and Margaret were different.
During this time, Lucas had been picking them up and dropping them off every day, treating them to good food and fun activities, and he was their real dad. So their scales had been gradually tipping.
Seeing her real dad being scolded by Frederick, Beth hesitated, then spoke up softly.
"Daddy Fred, can you not be so mean to Daddy?"
After speaking, seeing Frederick look over, she quickly lowered her head to eat.
Frederick didn't say anything, his handsome face showing no expression.
Xandra's heart was in her throat.
She glanced at Frederick. Even though his features remained composed, she felt the air had grown several degrees colder.
Just as she was about to speak, Charles beat her to it.
"Sisters, Daddy Fred isn't being mean to anyone. He's just stating facts and being reasonable. Mommy is his wife, so Daddy Fred's younger brother should be more respectful. That's basic courtesy that normal people should have. Do you understand?"
Elizabeth and Margaret looked at him and both nodded.
Xandra also glanced at her son, feeling grateful.
What a good son. Firm in his position, always on her side.
Frederick also looked at him, the corners of his lips curving slightly.
Good thing he still had a little ally who hadn't been won over by sugar-coated bullets!
Lucas kept smiling gently and harmlessly.
He patted Beth's head and said warmly, "Chuck is right. Daddy Fred wasn't being mean to me. Daddy was wrong. Alright, let's eat breakfast."
What he said seemed perfectly normal.
But Xandra felt that Lucas was being a bit fake at this moment.
Deliberately playing weak in front of the children, making Frederick seem especially domineering, tipping the children's scales more toward him.
After the meal, Lucas said he wanted to take the children to the estate.
Today was Richard's 80th birthday, and they were supposed to go celebrate anyway.
They just hadn't expected to go so early in the morning.
"Isn't it too early?" Xandra said.
Lucas looked at her. "Grandpa asked me to bring them over early to play. If you're worried, why don't you come along?"
Xandra glanced at Frederick, waiting for him to decide.
Lucas lowered his eyes, a flicker of emotion passing through them.
Why did she always listen to him?
Did she care about him that much?
"Let's go together."
Frederick had spoken, so Xandra went to change the children's clothes.
Harper had originally wanted to go later, but Rachel pulled her along.
She said she needed to go early to watch over Xandy and the children.
In case Jennifer gave them a hard time.
Harper thought about it and agreed. That matriarch of the Russell family was no pushover. Who knew how she might bully Xandra and the children.
So she readily agreed.
Frederick heard what the two mothers said, and a glint flashed in his eyes.
Today was Richard's special day. At the manor, he'd been in high spirits since early morning.
Having just finished breakfast, he was now waiting for the children to arrive.
His phone rang. He glanced at it and smiled.
The call was from Peter.
"Peter, are you about to head out?"
"No rush. The dinner isn't until evening, right?" Peter said.
Richard replied, "No rush, for real? Don't you want to come early to see your three great-grandchildren?"
His tone clearly carried a hint of showing off.
Before, when Peter found out the three children were Hawk family blood, he'd shown off in front of him countless times.
Now it was his turn to show off.
The three children were his great-grandchildren!
Their blood ties to him were closer!
