Chapter 156: The Last Stand of Marcus Hale

The tunnel groaned like a wounded animal.

Concrete cracked above our heads.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

Somewhere far above us, the compound finally began collapsing in earnest. Metal beams screamed as they tore loose, and the ground trembled with every new explosion from the reactor core.

But in the narrow maintenance corridor, none of that mattered.

Because Marcus Hale stood in front of me.

And neither of us were leaving without finishing this.

\---

Marcus’s massive hybrid form filled most of the tunnel.

His shoulders brushed against the concrete walls.

His claws dug deep grooves into the floor as he slowly circled me.

Despite the burns and blood covering his body, his movements remained steady.

Controlled.

He wasn’t just a monster.

He was still a warrior.

“You feel it, don’t you?” Marcus growled.

His voice echoed through the shaking corridor.

“The power inside your blood.”

I said nothing.

Marcus tilted his head slightly.

“You’re stronger now than you’ve ever been.”

His glowing eyes studied me carefully.

“Stronger than any creature the Creed has ever created.”

I clenched my fists.

“That’s not because of the Creed.”

Marcus chuckled low in his throat.

“You still believe that lie?”

The tunnel trembled again.

Chunks of concrete fell behind him.

But Marcus didn’t move.

“Everything you are exists because of them.”

He tapped his massive chest with one claw.

“They created the future.”

Then his eyes hardened.

“And you’re standing in its way.”

\---

My voice came out quieter than I expected.

“You’re wrong.”

Marcus raised an eyebrow ridge beneath the thick fur covering his face.

“Oh?”

I stepped forward slowly.

The power inside my chest pulsed like a second heartbeat.

“They didn’t create me.”

The ground shook again, harder this time.

“They tried to control me.”

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“And what exactly do you think you are?”

I held his gaze.

“Someone who chooses what to do with that power.”

Marcus’s massive jaws curled into something almost like a smile.

“Choice.”

He spat the word like it was poison.

“Choice is an illusion created by weak people who fear destiny.”

His muscles tensed.

“You were born to lead the next evolution of this world.”

My heart pounded.

“And you think becoming monsters is the only way forward?”

Marcus didn’t hesitate.

“Yes.”

Then he attacked.

\---

The hybrid wolf launched forward with terrifying speed.

His claws tore through the air toward my chest.

This time, I didn’t dodge.

I stepped into the attack.

Marcus’s claws scraped across my shoulder as I slammed my fist into his ribs.

The impact echoed like thunder in the tunnel.

Marcus staggered sideways.

But he recovered instantly.

His tail smashed into the wall behind me, sending shards of concrete flying.

I ducked beneath it and drove my elbow into his jaw.

The massive wolf snarled.

Blood sprayed across the cracked floor.

But instead of weakening him…

The injury seemed to excite him.

Marcus laughed.

“You’re learning.”

Then he slammed into me with his full weight.

\---

We crashed through the tunnel wall together.

Concrete exploded outward.

The floor collapsed beneath us.

For a moment we fell through darkness.

Then we hit the lower service level of the compound.

The impact shattered a row of metal pipes.

Water burst from the broken lines, flooding the floor instantly.

Marcus rolled to his feet first.

The hybrid wolf shook water from his fur.

“Good.”

His glowing eyes burned brighter.

“Now we can fight properly.”

\---

Above us, another explosion tore through the compound.

The entire ceiling cracked open.

Light from the burning facility poured down into the ruined service corridor.

Marcus stepped forward again.

His breathing had grown heavier now.

But his strength remained terrifying.

“You could end this.”

His voice softened slightly.

“Join me.”

I stared at him.

“After everything you’ve done?”

Marcus gestured around us.

“Everything I’ve done was necessary.”

He stepped closer.

“You’ve seen what humans are capable of.”

My mind flashed briefly to the laboratories.

The experiments.

The cages.

Marcus noticed the hesitation.

“They created the Creed.”

His voice lowered.

“Without us… the world will repeat the same mistakes.”

My chest tightened.

Marcus leaned closer.

“But with us leading it…”

His eyes burned with conviction.

“…we can build something better.”

For a moment…

Just a moment…

I understood why he believed it.

Marcus Hale wasn’t fighting for power.

He was fighting for what he thought was the future.

But that didn’t make him right.

\---

The tunnel above us collapsed again.

More debris rained down.

The compound was seconds away from total destruction.

Marcus’s eyes flicked toward the collapsing ceiling.

Then back to me.

“Last chance.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

Marcus sighed.

“Then this is where your story ends.”

He lunged again.

\---

This time the fight became brutal.

No strategy.

No hesitation.

Just raw power.

Marcus’s claws tore through the air again and again.

Each strike shattered concrete and bent steel.

I moved faster than I ever had before.

Blocking.

Dodging.

Striking back.

My fist slammed into his chest.

His claws ripped across my side.

We crashed through pipes.

Through walls.

Through collapsing beams.

The entire service level became a battlefield.

Marcus roared as he slammed me into the flooded floor.

Water splashed across the room.

He raised his claws for the final strike.

But this time…

I was ready.

\---

The power inside my chest surged again.

But this time…

It didn’t explode outward.

It focused.

Condensed.

Every muscle in my body tightened.

I grabbed Marcus’s wrist.

And twisted.

The massive hybrid wolf crashed sideways into the wall.

Before he could recover—

I drove my fist into his chest.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Each impact shook the corridor.

Marcus staggered back.

His breathing became ragged.

For the first time…

Fear flickered in his glowing eyes.

“You…”

He coughed blood.

“…are stronger than I expected.”

I stepped forward slowly.

The water around my boots rippled with every step.

Marcus lowered into a defensive stance.

Even injured…

Even exhausted…

He was still ready to fight.

But the collapsing ceiling above us had other plans.

\---

A massive support beam snapped loose.

It crashed down between us with a deafening roar.

The entire floor tilted violently.

Water surged through the broken corridor.

Marcus looked up at the collapsing structure.

Then back at me.

For the first time…

His expression changed.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Understanding.

“You really believe you can change the world.”

I met his gaze.

“I believe people deserve the chance to try.”

Marcus slowly nodded.

Then he did something none of us expected.

He stepped back.

\---

The tunnel behind him was already collapsing.

Flames from the burning compound poured down through the shattered ceiling.

Marcus looked at the destruction quietly.

Then he looked back at me one last time.

“You might actually be strong enough.”

His voice softened slightly.

“Stronger than the Creed ever intended.”

Another explosion shook the corridor.

Marcus took one final step backward.

Into the collapsing darkness behind him.

And then he was gone.

Buried beneath the falling ruins of the compound.

\---

I stood there for a moment.

Breathing heavily.

Water rushing around my boots.

The tunnel ceiling groaned above me.

Then Dominic’s voice echoed down the corridor.

“Roxanne!”

I turned.

Dominic, Aidan, Elena, and the others were rushing toward me through the smoke.

Dominic still carried the girl carefully in his arms.

Aidan looked around the destroyed corridor.

“Where’s Marcus?”

I glanced back toward the collapsed tunnel.

“Gone.”

Elena blinked.

“Gone as in…?”

The ceiling above us cracked open again.

Chunks of concrete fell around our feet.

I grabbed Aidan’s arm.

“Gone as in we need to leave right now.”

Callum didn’t argue.

“Best idea I’ve heard all day.”

We ran.

Through the flooding service tunnels.

Through the crumbling maintenance corridors.

Through the burning remains of the compound.

And seconds after we burst out into the open forest—

The entire facility collapsed behind us.

The explosion lit the sky like a second sunrise.

The Creed’s strongest training compound…

Was gone.

But deep down…

I knew something important.

Marcus Hale’s war might be over.

But the Creed’s war…

Was only just beginning.
