Chapter 157: Consequences
The explosion felt like the world splitting open.
A shockwave ripped through the forest the moment we cleared the compound’s outer gate. The ground shook violently beneath our feet, and a blast of heat rushed past us like a burning wind.
I didn’t stop running.
None of us did.
Behind us, the entire Creed facility collapsed in on itself.
Concrete towers folded like paper.
Steel beams snapped.
Flames shot into the sky as the reactor core finally detonated beneath the ruins.
The explosion lit the dark forest like sunrise.
For a moment the night disappeared completely.
And then…
Silence.
Not true silence.
But the strange quiet that follows destruction.
The roar of the compound was gone.
The alarms.
The machinery.
The screams.
Everything.
All that remained behind us was a mountain of fire and smoke rising above the trees.
The Creed stronghold had been erased.
\---
We didn’t stop running until the forest swallowed the light of the burning ruins.
Branches scraped against my arms as we pushed deeper into the woods. Fallen leaves crunched beneath our boots while distant sirens echoed faintly in the far distance.
Eventually Aidan raised a hand.
“Stop.”
Everyone slowed.
Breathing heavily.
The air here felt cooler.
Cleaner.
Safer.
But none of us relaxed.
Not yet.
Dominic carefully lowered the girl he’d been carrying onto a patch of grass beneath a wide oak tree.
Her small body looked fragile against the dark earth.
Elena immediately knelt beside her.
“Her pulse is weak,” she said quietly.
My chest tightened.
The girl’s eyes were closed now, her breathing shallow and uneven.
Callum crouched nearby.
“Did the experiments do this to her?”
Dominic’s voice was low.
“Yes.”
His fingers brushed gently through the girl’s tangled hair.
“They were trying to create something.”
Aidan folded his arms.
“They succeeded.”
The word hung heavy in the air.
Because we all knew it was true.
\---
I stepped closer.
The faint glow that had once filled the girl’s eyes had faded now.
But the energy inside her was still there.
I could feel it.
The same strange power that had surged through the Ascension Chamber.
The same power that now lived inside my blood.
The girl stirred slightly.
Her lips moved weakly.
Dominic leaned closer.
“What is it?”
Her voice barely rose above a whisper.
“They’re… still coming.”
Everyone froze.
Aidan’s eyes narrowed.
“Who?”
The girl’s eyelids fluttered weakly.
“The others.”
My stomach dropped.
“Elena,” I said quietly, “what does she mean?”
Elena looked uneasy.
“The Creed wasn’t just running one experiment.”
She glanced toward the distant glow of the burning facility.
“That place was only one of their sites.”
Aidan cursed under his breath.
“So we just destroyed one branch of a much bigger problem.”
Callum sighed.
“Fantastic.”
\---
Dominic looked at me.
His expression was serious.
“Talia.”
The name made my chest tighten again.
“The girl you met in the chamber.”
I nodded slowly.
Dominic gestured toward the unconscious child.
“That’s her.”
I stared at the girl again.
“Talia…”
The name felt strange in my mouth.
Like something important I hadn’t fully realized yet.
Aidan looked between us.
“You know her?”
I shook my head.
“Not exactly.”
But memories flashed in my mind.
The chamber.
The glowing energy.
The moment our eyes had met.
The strange connection I’d felt.
Callum noticed the look on my face.
“Oh boy.”
He pointed at me.
“You’re doing the ‘something weird just happened in my brain’ face again.”
Elena looked curious.
“What did you feel?”
I hesitated.
Then answered honestly.
“A connection.”
Dominic’s expression darkened slightly.
“The Creed might have linked your DNA during the experiments.”
Aidan frowned.
“You mean they made her… like Roxanne?”
Elena shook her head slowly.
“Not exactly.”
She studied the girl carefully.
“Something different.”
\---
The forest wind rustled through the trees around us.
Smoke from the burning facility drifted faintly through the air.
But beneath that…
Another sound emerged.
Engines.
Far away.
But getting closer.
Callum heard it first.
“Oh that can’t be good.”
Aidan turned toward the sound.
“Vehicles.”
Dominic’s jaw tightened.
“They found the facility.”
Elena looked worried.
“If government forces arrive before we leave—”
Aidan finished the thought.
“They’ll ask questions we can’t answer.”
Callum pointed toward the tree line.
“Then maybe we should stop standing around discussing philosophy and start moving.”
Dominic lifted Talia carefully again.
But before we could start moving—
A faint voice echoed through my mind.
Not out loud.
Inside my head.
Roxanne.
I froze.
\---
The voice was quiet.
But unmistakable.
Marcus.
I turned slowly toward the burning ruins behind us.
Aidan noticed immediately.
“What is it?”
I shook my head slightly.
“Nothing.”
But the voice returned.
You think this war is over.
My heart began pounding.
It’s only begun.
I clenched my fists.
Marcus was dead.
Buried beneath the compound.
So why could I still hear him?
The voice whispered one final sentence.
They are already watching you.
Then it vanished.
\---
“Roxanne?”
Dominic’s voice pulled me back.
Everyone was staring at me now.
Concern written across their faces.
“You spaced out,” Elena said.
I forced a breath.
“I’m fine.”
Callum tilted his head.
“You say that like someone who is definitely not fine.”
But we didn’t have time to discuss it.
The sound of engines grew louder now.
Headlights flickered faintly through the trees in the distance.
Aidan gestured deeper into the forest.
“Time to disappear.”
Dominic nodded.
“Let’s move.”
\---
We walked for hours.
Deeper into the wilderness.
Far away from the ruins of the Creed facility.
Eventually the forest began thinning.
Dawn crept slowly across the horizon.
Soft light spilled between the trees.
Birds began singing again.
For the first time all night…
The world felt calm.
We stopped near a small clearing beside a quiet river.
Dominic gently laid Talia down on a blanket Elena had packed.
The girl slept peacefully now.
Callum stretched his arms.
“Okay.”
He groaned.
“I vote we never fight evil organizations inside exploding buildings again.”
Aidan smirked slightly.
“Noted.”
Elena crouched beside the river, washing blood from her hands.
“We need a plan.”
Dominic looked at me.
“They’re going to come after her.”
He nodded toward Talia.
“And after you.”
Aidan nodded grimly.
“The Creed won’t stop.”
Callum added quietly,
“And if the government gets involved…”
He didn’t finish the sentence.
He didn’t need to.
\---
The morning sun finally rose above the trees.
Golden light spread across the clearing.
I stood there for a long moment.
Watching the river flow quietly past.
The war with Marcus Hale had ended.
But the voice in my head still echoed faintly.
They are already watching you.
I looked down at Talia sleeping peacefully on the blanket.
Then at the friends standing beside me.
Dominic.
Aidan.
Elena.
Callum.
Our fight wasn’t finished.
Not even close.
And deep down…
I had the terrifying feeling that the next enemy we faced would be far worse than Marcus Hale ever was.
