Chapter 155: The Collapse
The reactor screamed.
Not the sound of a machine.
The sound of something dying.
Deep beneath the chamber floor, the core of the facility had begun tearing itself apart. The white glow rising through the cracks in the metal platform had become blinding, like a miniature sun burning beneath our feet.
Heat flooded the room.
Metal warped.
Pipes burst open, spraying steam across the chamber.
The countdown monitors had stopped showing numbers entirely.
Now the screens only flashed one word over and over.
MELTDOWN.
Dominic shouted across the chaos.
“Roxanne! We have to go!”
But Marcus Hale still stood between me and the exit.
The massive hybrid wolf’s body rose slowly through the smoke and sparks, his fur singed from the energy shockwave that had blasted him across the platform moments earlier.
Blood ran from a deep gash above his eye.
Yet somehow…
He looked stronger.
His glowing amber eyes locked onto mine.
“You’re hesitating.”
His voice rumbled through the collapsing chamber like distant thunder.
“You always did have a weakness for mercy.”
Behind him, the only open path out of the chamber trembled as pieces of the ceiling began crashing down.
We had seconds.
Maybe less.
But Marcus still wasn’t moving.
And he wasn’t letting anyone else move either.
\---
Aidan staggered toward us, wiping blood from his mouth.
“Roxanne…”
His voice was strained but steady.
“Don’t hold back.”
Marcus’s massive head turned slightly toward him.
“You always misunderstood the world, Aidan.”
His claws scraped across the cracked floor.
“You still believe in loyalty.”
Then his eyes returned to me.
“But she understands now.”
He gestured toward the blazing reactor beneath the chamber.
“The old world is collapsing.”
Another violent tremor ripped through the room.
Glass tanks exploded along the walls, flooding the floor with glowing liquid.
Marcus spread his arms slightly.
“And the new one is rising.”
My chest tightened.
Because I could feel it too.
The energy in the room wasn’t just heat from the reactor.
Something inside the Ascension Chamber had been awakened.
The hybrid technology.
The power systems.
The experiments.
Everything was reacting to the meltdown.
And the energy inside my blood was reacting to it too.
\---
Elena shouted from the far side of the chamber.
“We’re running out of time!”
Dominic held the unconscious girl tightly in his arms.
Her glowing eyes had faded slightly, but her breathing remained shallow.
Callum grabbed Elena’s arm.
“The tunnel entrance is collapsing!”
Echo’s voice crackled through the comms.
“I’m clearing a path from the upper levels!”
But none of that mattered if Marcus stayed where he was.
The hybrid wolf took another slow step forward.
Smoke curled around his massive body.
“You could stand beside me.”
His voice softened slightly.
“Together we could finish what the Creed started.”
I stared at him.
“You think this is evolution?”
Marcus’s eyes burned brighter.
“I know it is.”
The reactor beneath the floor exploded again, sending a shockwave up through the platform.
The entire chamber tilted violently.
Marcus didn’t even flinch.
“Humanity is weak.”
He gestured toward the chaos around us.
“They built a fragile world.”
Then he tapped his chest with one massive claw.
“But we are stronger.”
My voice came out quiet.
“But strength isn’t everything.”
Marcus growled.
“That is exactly what the weak say.”
Then he lunged.
\---
This time the attack came faster.
Harder.
Marcus’s massive claws tore through the air straight toward my throat.
But something inside me had changed.
The energy flowing through my body felt clearer now.
Controlled.
The moment Marcus struck—
I moved.
Not backward.
Forward.
My hand slammed into his chest before his claws could reach me.
The impact shook the chamber.
Marcus’s massive body flew backward across the platform.
He crashed through a steel support beam with a deafening roar.
The entire ceiling above him collapsed.
For a moment…
Marcus disappeared beneath the rubble.
Callum blinked.
“Okay.”
He slowly raised both hands.
“I’m officially terrified of her now.”
Elena grabbed his jacket.
“Move!”
\---
We ran.
Dominic carried the girl carefully through the smoke-filled chamber.
Aidan stayed close behind him.
Elena and Callum cleared debris from the collapsing corridor.
The reactor glow behind us grew brighter every second.
Heat burned against my back as we sprinted toward the tunnel entrance.
But just as we reached the stairwell—
The rubble behind us exploded outward.
Marcus Hale emerged from the wreckage.
\---
The hybrid wolf looked worse now.
His fur was burned.
Blood covered his claws.
One of his shoulders hung at an unnatural angle.
But the rage in his glowing eyes had only grown stronger.
“You cannot run from what you are!”
His roar shook the entire hallway.
Marcus launched himself forward again.
Even injured, he moved like a freight train.
Aidan stepped in front of Dominic instantly.
“Keep moving!”
Marcus slammed into Aidan, sending both of them crashing through the corridor wall.
Elena cursed.
“Not again!”
I turned back.
Because this time…
Marcus wasn’t aiming for me.
He was aiming for Dominic.
For the girl in his arms.
\---
Marcus burst through the dust cloud with terrifying speed.
His claws reached for Dominic’s throat.
Dominic twisted away just in time.
But the girl nearly slipped from his arms.
Marcus raised his claws again—
And I tackled him.
The two of us smashed through another wall.
Concrete shattered around us as we crashed into the lower maintenance corridor.
The tunnel floor cracked beneath the impact.
For a moment, everything went silent except for the distant roar of the reactor above us.
Marcus slowly pushed himself up again.
His breathing was heavier now.
But his eyes still burned with determination.
“You cannot protect them forever.”
I stood up slowly.
“Maybe not.”
Dust drifted through the tunnel air.
“But I can protect them right now.”
Marcus smiled.
Even through the blood and burns.
“You still don’t understand.”
His claws dug into the tunnel floor.
“You were never meant to protect people.”
The hybrid wolf’s muscles tensed for another attack.
“You were meant to rule them.”
\---
Above us, the reactor finally reached critical failure.
The sound that followed wasn’t an explosion.
It was worse.
A deep, tearing roar as the entire compound began collapsing in on itself.
The ground trembled violently.
The ceiling above the tunnel cracked open.
Chunks of concrete rained down around us.
Marcus glanced upward briefly.
Then back at me.
“One of us is leaving this place alive.”
His claws lowered into a final attack stance.
“And it will be me.”
I felt the power inside my chest surge again.
Stronger than ever before.
The energy from the Ascension Chamber was still flowing through my blood.
But now…
It wasn’t chaotic anymore.
It felt focused.
Like it had finally found its purpose.
I looked Marcus Hale directly in the eyes.
And this time…
I didn’t hesitate.
Because the fight between us was about to end.
And only one of us would walk out of the collapsing compound.
