Chapter 34
The Aquila drifted through a quiet sector of space, cloaked from prying eyes. Thick tension filled the ship as her crew recovered from their close call with the Coalition. Each person felt the weight of their mission differently, but the uncertainty ahead unified them.
Selene paced in the command room, her mind racing with possibilities. The prototype sat in its secured casing, glowing faintly like a heartbeat-a reminder of both their progress and their peril.
Xara entered, crossing her arms. "We can't stay here long. This quiet won't last."
Selene stopped and looked at her. "Do we have any safe zones left?
Xara hedged. "Not precisely. The Syndicate knows most of our hidey-holes, and now the Coalition is sniffing around. I say we're moving before either side catches up."
"Agreed," Selene said. "Let's get everybody together.
The crew convened in the mess hall, the mood grim. Dante leaned against the wall, his usual charm subdued. Wren fiddled with a small device, her mind clearly preoccupied. Xara stood nearby, her gaze sharp, while Kade sat quietly, observing.
Selene cleared her throat. “We’ve had a tough few days, but we’re still here. That’s something to be proud of.”
“Barely,” Wren muttered, not looking up.
Selene paid no mind to the comment. "We have to come to a decision regarding our course of action next. The prototype is too dangerous to use blind, but it's too valuable to abandon. Wren, how close are you to understanding it?"
Wren blew out a loud breath. "Closer than I was yesterday, but not close enough. This thing is. it's like trying to read a language I've never seen before.
“We don’t have the luxury of time,” Xara said. “We need answers now, or we’re dead in the water.”
Kade spoke up, his voice calm. “What about the Nexus Archive?”
Everyone turned to him.
“The Nexus Archive?” Selene repeated.
“It’s a myth,” Dante said, shaking his head. “A ghost story for desperate travelers.”
"Not fully," said Kade. "It is real. A secreted repository of knowledge, buried in uncharted space. If anyone has information on the prototype, it's the Nexus."
Selene considered this. "Do you know how to find it?"
Kade was hesitant. "I have. a lead. But it's dangerous."
"Riskier than sitting here, waiting to get caught?" Selene asked.
Kade didn't say anything, but the silence was enough.
\---
It was settled then. The Aquila turned course, to head for the coordinates Kade provided.
Xara piloted with ease, paying close attention to everything. Selene sat next to her, eyes fixed on the blur of stars out the cockpit window.
"Do you trust Kade?" Xara asked suddenly.
Selene pondered that a moment. "I trust his motives. He wants to survive as much as we do."
"That's not the same as trusting him," Xara said.
"No, it's not," Selene said.
\---
Down in the engine room, Wren was slaving away, smothered by tools and schematics, while the prototype pulsed softly on her workbench, casting an eerie glow across the shadows.
Dante came in, leaning casually against the doorway. "How's it going?"
"Terrible," Wren said without looking up.
"That good, huh?" Dante returned with a tease.
Wren shot him a glare. "This is no joke. I screw up, we go boom."
"I know," Dante said, his voice softening. "But you got this. You're the smartest person on this ship."
Wren snorted. "Flattery won't fix this thing."
"Maybe not, but it doesn't hurt," Dante replied with a grin.
Despite herself, Wren smiled.
\---
Hours later, the Aquila approached the coordinates. The crew filled the cramped cockpit, the air thick with tension.
Before them lay a churning nebula, ablaze with every color of the spectrum. Lightning crackled within, casting flickering glows into the darkness.
"In there?" Xara asked incredulously.
"That's what the lead says," Kade replied.
"It looks like death," Wren muttered.
"Only one way to find out," Selene said. "Xara, take us in."
\---
The ship dived into the nebula, and immediately the turbulence hit hard. The Aquila bucked and heaved violently as electrical storms raged around it.
“Shields holding at 60%,” Wren reported from the engine room.
“Keep us steady,” Selene said, gripping her seat.
“I’m trying!” Xara snapped, wrestling with the controls.
\---
After what felt like an eternity, the turbulence eased. The nebula parted, revealing a massive structure floating in the void.
The Nexus.
Unlike anything any of them had seen before, it sprawled, some labyrinthine space station barely aglow with threads of blue luminosity.
"It's not a myth," Dante whispered.
Selene swallowed hard as she stared at it. "Okay. Well, let us see what is hiding behind all this.
The Aquila docked at the Nexus, its crew stepping into the eerie silence of the station. The air was cold, the walls lined with strange symbols that glowed faintly.
"This place gives me the creeps," Wren whispered.
"Stay close," Selene ordered.
Teeming with caution, they worked their way deeper into the station, their footsteps echoing off the vacant hallways. It seemed like the symbols shifted as they passed, watching them.
"Anyone else feel like we're being watched?" Dante asked.
"Don't jinx it," Xara replied, her hand on her weapon.
\---
Finally, they came to a central chamber. At the room's center was a large console, its surface etched with the same glowing symbols.
"This must be it," Wren said, stepping forward.
"Can you access it?" Selene asked.
"Give me a minute," Wren replied, already working.
The others watched as Wren decoded the console; the air was thick, electric with anticipation.
In an instant, the symbols etched in the walls flared to life. The station began to hum, as if it were coming to life.
"What's going on?" Xara called out.
"I don't know!" Wren yelled back, furiously hitting keys.
Before anyone could react, a holographic figure appeared in the center of the room. It was humanoid but featureless, its voice cold and mechanical.
“Unauthorized access detected. State your purpose.”
Selene stepped forward, her voice steady. “We seek knowledge. Help us, and we’ll leave.”
The hologram was silent for a moment. “Knowledge comes at a price.”
“What price?” Selene asked warily.
“Your truth,” the hologram replied.
Selene frowned. “What does that mean?”
It was then that the hologram didn't say a word, yet had the room change: its walls moving to become mirrors. In them, every crew member stared at his reflection, yet not really as expected.
The mirrors now reflected fears, regrets, secrets.
In one mirror, Selene stood on the battlefield, corpses all around her; upon her-weighing hard-the burden of each and every one of her choices.
Dante saw a younger version of himself, holding onto a hand that he had been forced to let go of.
Wren saw a job gone wrong, an explosion she was unable to stop.
Xara saw herself alone, abandoned by those she had trusted.
Kade's reflection was cloaked, his secrets even here unrevealed.
\---
The hologram spoke once more. "To find enlightenment, you must face your realities. It is then that you shall discover what you are looking for.
Her face pale, Selene turned to her crew. "We cannot go back now. Face it. Whatever it shows you, don't let it break you."
One by one, they came forward, prepared to face their truths and take up the knowledge that would hopefully see them through alive.
