Chapter 31
The Aquila cruised through the void, its battered hull still holding strong despite the chaos they had escaped. The crew had settled into cautious silence, their minds replaying the events of the mission. In the command room, Selene stood over the prototype, its faint blue glow illuminating her face.
Wren leaned against the wall, arms crossed. "This better be worth it," she said. Her cheek was smudged with soot from the firefight, but she didn't seem to care.
"It will be," Selene replied. "If we can figure out how to use it."
Dante entered the room, his movements deliberate. "We need answers. Fast. The Syndicate and the Coalition aren't going to ignore what just happened."
She nodded at Selene, "Wren, can't you decode what its functions are, figure out just what we have here?"
Wren moved to the console, rummaging inside her toolbox for special attachments and softwares. "Give me a few hours. This technology is way past anything I have ever seen before, but if anyone could crack it, that would be me."
Selene smiled faintly. "Never that.".
Hours had passed with Wren at work, hands flying over the console, the rest of the crew awaiting an outcome. Tension mounted. Selene paced the floor; Dante leaned against the wall, his eyes fastened on that glow of a device.
Suddenly, a burst of laughter escaped Wren's throat. "Got it!"
The rest crowded in as Wren called up schematics for the prototype on her screen.
This thing is insane," Wren said, her eyes aglow with excitement. "It's a high-energy weapon, but it's also modular. It can adapt to different environments, making it versatile for ground, air, and even space combat."
Xara frowned. "So it's a weapon of mass destruction?"
"Not quite," Wren said. "It's precise. Pinpoint targeting, minimal collateral damage. It's designed to take out high-priority targets without unnecessary casualties.
She stared hard at the schematics, her mind racing a mile a minute. "This could change everything. If we use this against the Syndicate-"
"We'd be painting a target on our backs," Dante cut in. "They won't let us get away with it."
"They're already hunting us," Selene said. "This gives us a chance to fight back on our terms."
\---
The crew debated, until suddenly the alarm on the ship began to wail.
“Incoming!” Xara shouted from the cockpit. “We’ve got Syndicate ships on our tail!”
Selene’s stomach sank. “How did they find us?”
Dante cursed under his breath. “Raven. She must’ve tipped them off.”
“Wren, shut that thing down and secure it,” Selene ordered. “Dante, with me. Let’s give them a fight they won’t forget.”
The crew moved into action all knowing what from them was expected. Aquila's engines groaned and roared as Xara threw the ship through an asteroid field, attempting to shake their pursuers.
\---
Down in the weapons bay, Selene and Dante armed themselves for the inevitable boarding party.
"Do you ever get tired of this?" Dante asked as if the tension didn't exist.
"Not really," Selene said with a smirk. "You?"
"Never. Keeps life interesting.
They exchanged a quick, wry smile before the dreadful screech of steel locked to steel filled the ship. The Syndicate had latched on to them.
\---
The boarding party thundered aboard the Aquila with blazing guns, only to be met with resistance by the proficient and skillful movements of Selene and Dante.
GUNFIRE ECHOED DOWN THE AISLE as shouting exploded around them, the corridors of the ship turning into one great battlefield. Selene plunged behind shelter. Her pulse went into overdrive.
"Wren, how's that prototype?" she yelled into her comm.
"Still working on securing it!" Wren called back, strain in her voice clear.
"Hurry up," Selene said. "We don't have much time."
\---
The battle raged, but the crew held their own. Sharp commands from Selene and Dante's unshakeable precision kept them ahead of the attackers.
In the engine room, Wren finally got the prototype locked into a secure containment unit. "It's done!" she called over the comm.
"Good," Selene replied. "Now get out of there. We're regrouping at the cockpit."
The crew fought their way back to the cockpit, where Xara was still piloting the ship with expert precision.
"We've got three ships on us and no clear path out," Xara reported.
Selene's mind whirred. "Wren, can we use the prototype?"
"Not without blowing ourselves up in the process!" Wren shouted.
Selene swore under her breath. "Then we need another plan."
Dante gestured at the asteroid field on the screen. "We can use that to our advantage. If we can lure them in, we may be able to lose them."
"Do it," Selene replied.
\---
Xara flew the Aquila through the asteroid field-the ship moving deftly around the enormous boulders. The Syndicate vessels followed, relentless with their ordnance firing.
Selene and her crew returned fire against the oncoming ships' engines and armaments.
"This is insane!" Xara yelled, barely dodging one collision after another.
"Just keep flying," Selene said calmly.
\---
It was a gamble that paid off. The ships of the Syndicate began to succumb, either destroyed or too damaged to navigate the treacherous asteroid field.
When the last ship went up in a bright, blazing flash of light, the crew let out a collective sigh of relief.
"Is everyone all right?" Selene asked wearily, her voice firm nonetheless.
"We are alive," Dante said, placing a hand on her shoulder.
Selene smiled a little. "That's all that matters."
\---
Later, in the mess hall, the crew gathered to regroup. The prototype sat in the center of the table, its faint glow a reminder of what they had risked everything to obtain.
“This thing better be worth it,” Xara said, eyeing the device warily.
“It will be,” Selene said. “We’ve got a weapon now. Something to fight back with.”
“And a target on our backs,” Dante added.
Selene nodded. "We've always had one. But now, we have a chance to win. To end this."
The crew exchanged determined looks, their resolve hardening.
Whatever was coming next, they would face it together.
