Chapter 68: What Is Going To Happen?
Chapter 68: What Is Going To Happen?
Ebony Winters POV:
Where were they taking me? What was going to happen next? Should I fear for my life after hearing a door like that? Suddenly, I was hit by a wave of cool musty air even through the black hood that I was wearing. I couldn't help but start shaking even more. However, I was already shaking, and I didn't think that was possible.
I have read about those kinds of doors, the ones that creak when opened, from the books I found in the Forbidden Zone. It was an eerie scene, as I recall, with the dame being in profound danger. Or at least that is how I recall it from when I read that part, as it was last mentioned there. So, naturally, I feared the worst was next for me, as I was unable to see anything even now.
"Here, I will pick her up," one of the two men scoffed in a gruff tone, almost as if he were speaking through gritted teeth. Why? It's not like I did anything to make him angry. All I wanted them to do was to carry me. Was that too much to ask for? "Great, now get the door closed."
Without warning, I nearly had the air knocked out of me as the man who picked me up slammed me down over his shoulder, causing me to start to cough violently. This is not at all how I thought this day was going to go at first. At this point, I was having a difficult time remembering which man was which, and who said what, but when I really thought about it, did that really matter right now? The question is was Nic going to get to me in time?
I couldn't help it, as you heard the old door creak as it slammed closed. In the distance, you could hear the drip of water as the musty smell grew stronger now that the door was closed again. Where had they taken me to now? This was nothing like the first time I was taken. Those caverns under the last castle were wide and dark, but at least I could see where we were going. Now, all I could do was smell that scent that seemed to burn my nose, and I couldn't help but wonder what fate I was facing next.
Suddenly, the man holding me up spun on his heels as they both started to walk away from the door. My arms were so weak that they just hung limp down the back of the man who was carrying me. There was no way I wanted to touch this man anymore than they had already done so. I needed to get a distraction. Something to get my mind off my current situation. But what could do that exactly? I mean, this didn't seem to be something I could live past, could it?
As I thought back on things when this day first started, I first thought I liked the dress I was wearing now. To be more precise, I even liked the fact that Nic was patient with me. Never before have I had anyone be so patient with me as Nic was. When he helped me get dressed, that is. I've never had somebody assist me the way he did. He wouldn't even allow a simple servant to look upon me. All she did was hand him the items I was to put on, giving simple directions on how they were supposed to be placed on me.
The way all of this started from the moment I stepped out of the source of water I jumped into, I thought I was living in a fairytale. But now, I felt like I was living in a nightmare, wondering when I was going to be able to wake up from this horrid dream. I made sure to keep my eyes closed. It's not like I could see anything anyway.
As the men walked along, I could hear their footsteps echoing on the floor of this strange hallway. I could only imagine what it would look like. Dark and damp with a moist texture on the walls. What else would explain the scent that was penetrating the dark hood that I was wearing? It wasn't all that much longer before they walked into what I could only assume was a large room or underground cavern of some type.
"Finally, now let's get on with this," said the man who was next to the one holding me. "Lie her down here, and I will go and inform our guest that we have arrived."
The man holding me didn't respond in a usual manner, but he grunted in his response. What kind of response was that? At least he could speak normally, unlike me. I only wish that I could speak as well as they could. Well, speaking in general would be better than not being able to speak clearly at all, I guess. That's when the man reached up with his one hand, wrapped it around my dangling legs, and pulled me down till my back landed in his other arm as he dropped me down onto a flat surface.
Once again, I had the air knocked out of me in a way. My arms were lying there above my head as I lay limp on the surface of some kind of table. Finally, I mustered the strength to move my arms down to lie in front of my chest.
"Oh no, you don't," I heard the man say as he reached over me and grabbed each of my wrists, leaning forward and holding them to the table above my head.
I whimpered in pain as he pressed the back of my hands into the old wooden surface. "Ha, that is going to do you no good, you little..."
He didn't finish his statement, suddenly letting go when I heard more footsteps approaching, as I can only assume they entered the room we were in. I wished I could look around, but as of right now, would I even want to?
"You see?" Asked the other man who went to get this new stranger. "I told you the color of her hair was as red as the fire burns."
I couldn't help but shudder as I felt a strange presence walk up to me, closing the distance from wherever they first walked into the room. I knew that whoever this was, this particular individual was no friend of mine. I could hear a low rumble coming from this new individual. What could that mean? What capabilities did this particular person have? Sure, Nic was my mate. Despite not quite understanding that completely, I believed it. But this man... The one who was standing over me now, there was something about him that I didn't like.
"Have you seen the color of her eyes yet?" Asked this new, strange figure.
Sure, I've been scared before, but the sound of his voice had such an edge to it,... I didn't quite know how to explain the sense of fear that swept over me upon hearing his deep and raspy tone.
