Chapter 67: Where Is My Mate?!

Chapter 67: Where Is My Mate?!
Ebony Winters POV:

Why isn't Nic here with me right now? Where is my mate?! Wait, did I actually say what I think I thought right now? Was I actually getting wrapped up in this whole idea of being the mate of the man they called the Lycan King? I started to shake my head from side to side as I was still having a hard time wrapping my mind around all of this.

Suddenly, I felt weaker than I had just a moment before. What did they do to me to make me feel this way? I knew right then that I would not be able to continue walking at this pace, but that didn't matter to them. They didn't seem to care that I couldn't walk, as they began to drag me this time, still keeping a tight grip on either of my arms.

"Pl-please slow d-down, I ca-can't wa-walk," I tried to say, hoping that would sway them to help me more than what they were doing as they held me low between these two men.

"You can forget any of that," said one of my left as the other guy spoke up right after him.

He even scoffed at me even more when he added, "We must get you to where..."

"Silence, you fool," said the other man on my left, cutting off the one guy who was speaking. "We don't want her to know anything. You know what will happen if he gives her any word."

No one else said anything after that. All you could hear was the scraping of my legs against the ground and the whimpers I made as they continued to walk along, even quickening their pace at times. Who exactly were they, and what did they want with me? I didn't know anyone from this time period, no matter what year I found myself in. The only thing pressing on my mind was the path they were taking. It had to have been made up of some kind of gravel, or something close to it.

By this point, there was no point in trying to hold back the tears. All I could think of was each passing second when I could no longer walk. Why not pick me up and throw me over your shoulder? Wouldn't that be better instead of continuing to drag me? My poor feet were so sore at this point that I was pretty sure they could have been bleeding with each step. Wait, that might be a good thing. Then Nic could follow my literal blood trail back.

I winced at the thought of lifting my feet so they wouldn't scrape across the ground anymore, but I needed him to get to me before anything worse happened to me. I guess I could just suffer through this. How bad could it be? Better yet, how much longer are they going to force me to go through this? I mean, could I even handle the pain for much longer?

I didn't know what to do. I was so caught up in this moment that I felt my tears starting to burn the skin on my cheeks just as the fear began to grow from the depths, deep inside my chest. I didn't know where I was or how I was going to get away from this. Would I ever be able to walk after this point?

I wanted so much to be able to look around and show Nic exactly where I was, but due to the fact that I had this dark hood placed over my head, I was unable to see anything. I don't know what was worse, not being able to see where we were going, or not being able to anticipate what was going to happen to me before it actually happened.

With each passing moment, it was becoming somewhat difficult for me to breathe. I had to remain calm. I had to believe that Nic would get to me before anything happened. But even then, the question was, when would he find me? When would he even know where to look? They just kept going, dragging me along.

By this point, my face was somewhat soaked, and my skin stuck to the dark hood I was wearing, making it even harder to catch a full breath without inhaling dirt and soot from the hood. Then, before I realized it, they turned a different direction and started walking on a different path. I sighed a sigh of relief as I was no longer on the gravel path, now going through tall reeds of grass. Well, I guess it could be grass. It was cool to the touch of my burning and bleeding skin on the tops of my feet and lower legs.

I was ever so thankful they finally took a different path, only for the thought of not being struck by pebbles and stones along the gravel pathway.

Finally, after an unknowable amount of time, they stopped walking and nearly dropped me when they did. What was happening now? That's when both of them let go of my arms as I actually fell down and hit the ground. I hit my head on something in front of me, and it caused my ears to start ringing. Why cause a delay in dropping me, just so that I couldn't see it coming?! It was like I was unable to hear anything at that point.

I was beyond confused. Why would anyone want to take me away from Nic? If it wasn't for the fact that my ears were ringing, I thought I would have been deaf at that point. Great, to be deaf on top of not being able to speak clearly. Then the fear intensified as a thought came to mind. Would Nic have understood me then? Would I still possess this strange ability to hear him in my head if that were the case?

I thought that by hitting my head, I had gone deaf. I couldn't even hear the chirping of the birds in the trees.

"Get the door open already," I finally heard one of the men speak, and I lifted myself slightly in relief, knowing it was all in my head.

'Oh Nic, where are you?' I thought to myself. With fear setting in, I suddenly had an overwhelming sense of remorse. 'Nic, I want you to know that I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry that I keep putting you in positions like this. I'm so sorry that I couldn't be stronger for you. I don't have the strength to fight them off if they try something.'

"We have to get her inside so no one sees us out here," I heard the other one speak up right then.

Suddenly, I was flooded by a wave of chills and fear, completely taking over me. Even the hairs on my arms stood up all over my body with the sound of a massive wooden door that started to creak as it opened. I knew nothing good would be waiting for me on the other side of this door. Would Nic find me? Or was it already too late?
