Chapter 38

*Gray*

The clock struck 11 O'clock, and I reluctantly left House A, feeling a sense of completeness that I had not experienced in a long time, both physically and spiritually. With a renewed sense of purpose, I began my journey towards the SUV that was parked on the driveway, taking in the beauty of the surroundings as I walked. However, my mind was preoccupied with thoughts of Angel, whose comforting embrace I longed for more than anything else at that moment. It was as if my body was yearning for her touch as if it was the only thing that could make me feel complete again. Perhaps it was the fact that I had finally made her mine, after months of longing and waiting, that had intensified my desire for her. Whatever the reason, I was consumed by my need for her, and I couldn't wait to be in her arms once again.

As I settled into the luxurious and comfortable back seat of the gleaming SUV, I couldn't help but feel a whirlwind of emotions stirring within me. On one hand, I was basking in the warmth of Angel's tender embrace, reliving the moments when her touch had made my heart skip a beat, and savoring the pure, gentle love that we shared. The memories were vivid and sweet, filling me with a sense of contentment and happiness that I had never known before.

As I sat there lost in thought, my mind couldn't help but replay the manipulative plan that Cayla had devised to take Angel away from me. The mere thought of it left me feeling powerless and vulnerable. It was evident that Cayla had put a lot of thought and effort into this scheme, and I couldn't predict her next move. Initially, I had underestimated her, thinking that she would be easy to deal with. But as time went on, I realized that Cayla was a master at this game of cat and mouse.

The idea that Cayla posed a threat to Angel was unsettling to me. Angel is the one person who keeps me grounded on this planet, regardless of the circumstances. She has always been my rock, and the thought of losing her to someone as manipulative as Cayla was terrifying. The stark contrast between the pure love that Angel and I share and Cayla's calculated intentions has left me with a complex mix of emotions. It's challenging to unravel my feelings, but one thing is clear: I will do everything in my power to protect Angel from harm.

As I sat in the car, the smooth ride did little to ease the doubts and fears that were gnawing at my heart. I closed my eyes and tried to block out the emotions that were too raw, too real, and too overwhelming to ignore. My mind was consumed by thoughts of Angel and Cayla, wondering if Angel would remain true to me or if Cayla's devious tactics would win out in the end.

The uncertainty of what lay ahead left me feeling torn and lost, struggling to make sense of how I would continue to protect Angel. Despite my efforts to shield her, she continued to get hurt, and the danger that threatened her was growing closer with every passing second. It was as if the wall I had built to keep her safe was not enough to protect her from the impending danger.

As a result, anger boiled inside me, causing my cheeks to flush with warmth and my teeth to grit in frustration. Tears began to well up in my eyes as I thought of the pain Angel had endured under my watch. For the first time since childhood, I cried uncontrollably, unable to contain the overwhelming emotions that had been building up inside me.

Somehow, some way, I would find a way to shield her from anyone who wished to deceive, hurt her, or bring her down. However, another part of me was beginning to believe that maybe, just maybe, I'm not the right person for the job when it comes to her. I took a deep breath, feeling slightly anxious as I tried to regain my composure. I needed to convince myself that I was the right person for the job, capable of protecting her. I had the necessary skills and qualities within me, and I was confident that they would emerge when the time came. I knew that I had what it takes to succeed.

As my eyes gradually cleared and my confidence started to return, I felt the weight of my people's expectations bearing down on me. It had been a long and arduous journey in the SUV, but we had finally arrived at our destination - an impressive white polished building that stood grandly against the clear blue sky. The pillars holding up the roof all around added to its magnificence and made it seem even more impressive. The driver parked the vehicle, and I stepped out, taking a moment to adjust my white shirt and neatly pulling up my trousers, trying to look presentable and dignified for the occasion.

As I rounded the car and walked towards the building, I couldn't help but notice the heavily armed guards who appeared like statues, guarding the entrance. They stood there stoically, their eyes scanning the area for any potential threats. It was clear that security was a top priority here, and I was grateful for it. After all, we had arrived at one of my many bases, located an hour away from Angel's place of residence - a place where my people could feel safe and secure.

As I approached the entrance, I could see the intricate details of the building's architecture. The white marble pillars seemed to stretch up towards the sky, supporting the roof with their sturdy bases. The walls were adorned with beautiful carvings and intricate designs, each one telling a unique story. It was clear that this building was not only functional but also a work of art.

Finally, I reached the entrance, where the guards were waiting for me. They greeted me with a crisp salute and asked for my identification. After verifying my credentials, they allowed me to enter the building. As I stepped inside, I could feel the cool air conditioning wash over me, providing a welcome relief from the heat outside. The interior of the building was just as impressive as the exterior, with high ceilings and elegant decor. It was clear that no expense had been spared in creating this base, and I felt proud to be part of it.

As I walked down the imposing hallway, I couldn't help but feel a sense of urgency. The base I was in was a hub for intelligence gathering, and the goal was to find Cayla as soon as possible. I scanned the area, hoping someone had a lead. The hallway was flanked by two grand staircases, and as I approached the end of it, it opened up to a large table. The table was adorned with an array of weapons and high-tech gadgets, all carefully arranged and labeled.

Suddenly, a woman dressed in a striking black dress and a luxurious fur coat strode in. Her high heels clicked on the polished black marble floor as she barked orders like a seasoned general. She was clearly in charge, and everyone seemed to be under her command. "Scar, it's about damn time you got here," she scolded, motioning for a man in black to step aside so she could get a better look at what he had on his clipboard.

Finally, her gaze landed on me, and she flashed me a flirtatious smile. Her gleaming pearly whites and silver canine teeth were on full display. It was clear that she was used to getting what she wanted, and she had a certain charm that could disarm even the most guarded individuals. Despite her alluring demeanor, I knew that she was perfectly suited as a tracker. We had a mission to complete, and we couldn't let anything or anyone stand in our way.

As Marietta tried to engage me with a playful smile, I maintained my stoic expression. My mind was preoccupied with the task at hand, which was to finish what Cayla had started that day at the restaurant. Marietta seemed to be aware of my disinterest, and she rolled her eyes before gesturing me over. I approached her, and she picked up a remote from the table before turning to face a large flat-screen TV mounted on the wall.

Marietta began to speak, her hands moving animatedly with her words. She would occasionally glance at me before returning her attention to the screen. With the remote, she switched to a channel displaying a map, and the details of the case. "Well, we don't have any concrete information on her exact whereabouts yet, boss," she said. "However, we have been able to narrow it down a bit. From the start, we could have guessed that she was no longer in New York. After all, she fled the scene of her first crime before even committing it. So, we can assume that she is somewhere else. Our investigation has led us to believe that she might be in one of the nearby states, perhaps New Jersey or Pennsylvania. We have been tracking her movements by analyzing her credit card transactions and cell phone records. We have also been interviewing people who might have interacted with her recently. We're hoping to find some solid leads soon."
