Chapter 242 HAPPILY EVER AFTER.

Chapter 242 HAPPILY EVER AFTER.
\~~~SERENA.

ONE YEAR LATER.

“Ethan, if you plug that big smoke machine into the same plug as the jumping castle one more time, I am going to tie you to a tree.”

Maya stood in the middle of our green lawn, heavily pregnant while waving a paper like a boss while wearing a bright pink suit. Her sunglasses were pushed up on her head, and she was glaring down at Ethan, who looked like a man caught in a mess he never wanted to join.

“It is for the dragon entrance!” Ethan argued, wiping sweat from his forehead. His arms were covered in fake tattoos of bugs and spaceships. “Dawn asked for an enchanted forest. You cannot have a forest without smoke, Maya!”

“It is a four-year-old’s birthday, not a rock concert!” Maya shouted back, crossing her arms. “Turn that thing off before I kick you out of the family!”

I smiled, standing on the back porch and fixing the straps of my summer dress while watching the crazy scene on the grass.

Today was Dawn’s fifth birthday.

Five years. Where had the time gone? It felt like just yesterday I was running for my life, hiding in the dark, and scared of the exact man who was right now trying to fix a giant pink princess castle with a team of party workers.

I looked over toward the edge of the porch. Damien stood near the outdoor kitchen, wearing a clean white shirt with his sleeves rolled up. He looked like a model who had somehow ended up at a kids' party.

But right now, the big billionaire boss was kneeling on the ground, carefully sticking a shiny unicorn tattoo onto little Leo’s arm while our baby nephew stared at him in pure wonder.

“Daddy, you missed a spot! The unicorn needs a rainbow!”

Dawn walked up to Damien wearing a gold crown, a fluffy pink dress, and bright green rain boots because, as she said this morning, “princesses have to protect their feet from mud dragons.”

Damien looked up at our daughter, his dark eyes softening with that slow, sweet smile that still made my heart melt after all these years. He gently smoothed down the edge of the sparkly sticker on Leo’s arm.

“Sorry, Your Highness,” Damien said in his deep, serious voice. “The unicorn is now fixed. Does that pass your inspection?”

Dawn checked the tattoo closely, squinting her eyes before nodding. “Good. Now you have to help me check the cake tower because Uncle Ryan said there were extra chocolates hidden inside.”

“Ryan is a bad influence and I am taking away his uncle rights,” Damien joked, standing up and dusting off his knees as Dawn grabbed his hand and pulled him toward the food tent.

I walked out onto the grass as the afternoon sun warmed the yard. The place was full of laughter, colorful balloons, and kids running around playing games. It was so different from the cold, lonely silence of the Hale house when I first moved in. Back then, every corner felt scary, and the house felt like a cage.

Now? It was a real home. Warm, loud, and full of love.

“Thinking about something, boss lady?” a smooth voice asked beside me.

I turned to see Ryan walking up with two glasses of lemonade. He handed one to me with a warm smile. He looked so peaceful these days, traveling the world and playing the fun uncle who spoiled Dawn.

“Just looking at all of this,” I said softly, taking a sip as I watched Damien help Dawn pin a paper tail to a game board while kids cheered. “Sometimes it is hard to believe we made it. That all the bad stuff is really gone.”

Ryan smiled, looking over at them. “You guys fought hard for this happiness, Serena. Especially Damien. I remember when he used to treat people like chess pieces. Now look at him. He is totally wrapped around a five-year-old’s finger.”

“Don't tell him you noticed,” I laughed softly. “He still tries to act like a tough guy.”

“Oh, that act is long gone,” Ryan chuckled, tapping his glass against mine. “Everyone here knows the great Damien Hale has gone soft.”

Across the lawn, Dawn saw us and waved like crazy. “Mommy! Uncle Ryan! Come on! The cake is ready!”

“Duty calls,” Ryan grinned, setting his glass down and walking over to the crowd.

I stayed back for a second, smelling the summer air and the sweet birthday cake.

The past was gone. James was gone, and the dark days were just a bad memory.

When I reached the tent, Damien was holding the cake knife while twenty kids sang Happy Birthday terribly out of tune. Damien caught my eye over the candles, a deep look in his dark eyes.

As the song ended and Dawn blew out the candles with a huge puff that sent confetti flying everywhere, Damien stepped away from the crowd and walked over to me.

He didn't say anything. He just wrapped his strong arms around my waist from behind, pulling me tight against his chest as he rested his chin on my shoulder, watching our daughter laugh with her cousins.

“Happy birthday to our little princess,” Damien whispered softly as Dawn laughed with her friends. Then he turned to me, brushing his lips against my temple. “Hard to believe five years ago she made us a family.”

“Five years,” I said softly, leaning back against him. “Do you regret any of it? The noise, the kid, the mess?”

Damien let out a low laugh against my skin, holding me tighter.

“Never,” he said, his voice full of pure love. “You gave me a life I never knew I wanted, Serena. I wouldn't trade this mess for all the money in the world.”

“Good,” I whispered, turning around in his arms to wrap my hands around his neck. I looked up into those dark eyes that used to scare me. “Because I have a little secret.”

Damien raised an eyebrow, looking down at me with a soft smile. “What kind of secret?”

“Come with me,” I murmured, taking his hand.

I pulled him away from the loud party, leading him back inside the quiet house and straight up the stairs to our bedroom. I closed the heavy door behind us, shutting out the noise of the kids and the music.

Damien looked at me, his face dropping its relaxed look as he saw my hands trembling slightly over my face. He rushed over to me in a second, grabbing my wrists gently and pulling my hands away.

“Serena? Hey, what is wrong?” he asked, his voice suddenly sharp with worry. His dark eyes searched my face in a panic. “Are you okay? Are you hurt? What happened?”

I couldn't help the little laugh that bubbled up through my nerves. I reached into the pocket of my sundress, pulled out a small white plastic stick, and held it out to him.

Damien stared down at it. The two little pink lines were clear as day.

For a full five seconds, the cold man, the man who never lost control, completely froze. His breath hitched. His eyes went wide as he looked from the test back up to my face.

“Are you...?” he started, his voice barely a whisper, completely breathless.

“We’re having another one,” I beamed, tears of joy stinging my eyes. “I'm pregnant again.”

Damien stood completely still, staring at me as if his brain had just stopped working. Then, a slow, disbelieving laugh broke out of him. He grabbed the test from my hand, tossed it onto the bed, and grabbed my face in both hands.

Before I could say another word, he scooped me right off my feet, spinning me around in a circle as a wild, booming laugh tore out of his throat.

“Another one?” he groaned happily, burying his face in my neck as he set me back down on my feet, peppering my face with fast, desperate kisses. “Serena, are you trying to give me a heart attack? Another baby? We survived the toddler years by the skin of our teeth!”

“You love it,” I laughed, wrapping my arms tight around his neck as he pressed his forehead against mine.

“I do,” Damien whispered, his voice thick with a love so deep it took my breath away. He looked down at me, shaking his head with a wide, helpless smile. “Damn, honey... You really are a menace. But I wouldn't want it any other way.”

As Damien wrapped one arm around me and the other protectively over the tiny life growing beneath my heart, the laughter from downstairs drifted through the open bedroom door.

Dawn, our family, our home.

Once upon a time, I walked into Damien Hale’s office looking for a husband for revenge.

I never imagined I would leave with a love worth fighting for, a family worth protecting, and a forever I never believed existed.

Sometimes, the greatest revenge isn’t revenge at all.

It’s finding the happiness the world once tried to steal.

THE END.
