Chapter 227 PIECE BY PIECE.
\~~~SERENA.
I sobbed with raw, ugly desperation, letting out every ounce of terror, guilt, and exhaustion that had been building up inside my chest for days.
Damien didn't stiffen. He didn't pull away. Instantly, his strong arms came around my back, pulling me flush against his chest as if he wanted to shield me from the entire world. One of his large, rough hands came up to the back of my head, cradling me gently while his other hand rubbed soothing circles up and down my spine.
He didn't rush me. He just held me, letting me cry into his ruined, soot-stained jacket, whispering soft, meaningless sounds of comfort against my hair.
After a long time, the violent sobs slowed down into ragged breaths. I pulled back just enough to wipe my wet face with the back of my hand, resting my forehead against his.
Damien’s dark eyes were heavy with a quiet, fierce tenderness.
“Talk to me, moonlight,” he murmured, his thumb gently swiping away a tear from my cheek. “What are you so afraid of? Tell me everything.”
I swallowed hard, the words trembling on the tip of my tongue.
“I’m scared, Damien,” I whispered, my voice cracking. “I’m so scared that this baby is going to ruin my career completely. I’ve worked my entire life, every single day, to be a lawyer. I spent years studying to be a very great lawyer.”
Damien nodded slowly, listening without interrupting.
“I look at other women,” I continued, my voice rising with frustration and fear, “and all I see are mothers who got swallowed alive by domestic life. I’m terrified that once I give birth, I’ll get tied down to feeding schedules and diapers, and I will completely forget about wanting to be in a courtroom. I will get miserable, Damien. I will wake up ten years from now, looking in the mirror, and realize I’m just… somebody’s mother instead of the brilliant lawyer I swore I’d become.”
I choked back another sob, shaking my head.
“Every story I’ve ever heard about pregnancy and childbirth sounds like a nightmare. Your body changes, your freedom vanishes, your mind isn’t your own anymore. I haven't heard a single good thing about it, and it terrifies me.”
He kept holding me, his hand warm and steady against my back. He didn't brush off my fears or tell me I was being dramatic. He just let me pour it all out.
And then, a sudden, heavy thought hit me, making my chest tighten even more. I pulled back, staring straight into his eyes with a deep, aching confusion.
“Why?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. “Why would you give me the power to decide what we do with our child? Why aren't you fighting me on this? Why do you want me to be the one to choose?”
My voice shook. “Is it not going to destroy you, too?”
Damien went very still. He held my gaze, his expression turning solemn and profoundly serious.
“It will destroy me, Serena,” he admitted quietly. “I’m not going to lie to you.”
His voice cracked slightly.
“I’ve wanted a family without even realizing it until yesterday.”
He looked down, his hand sliding slowly from my back to rest flat against my stomach again.
“So yes… it would break my heart.”
Then, his dark eyes snapped back up, locking onto mine with an intensity that took my breath away.
“Be that as it may… if carrying this baby means losing you piece by piece…”
He swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing.
“Then I’d rather lose my dream than lose my wife.”
The words hung in the air, heavy, terrifying, and overwhelmingly powerful.
“Whatever you choose…” Damien whispered, leaning in so close our noses almost touched, his voice dropping into a fierce, unwavering vow. “I choose you.”
I stared at him, my heart hammering wildly against my ribs. A man who had lived his whole life in the dark, a man who had never been loved properly, was willing to hand over his greatest happiness just to keep me safe.
How was I supposed to argue with that? How was I supposed to resist a love so absolute?
Damien saw the storm still raging in my eyes, and he gently took both of my hands in his, pressing a soft kiss to my knuckles.
“Serena, listen to me,” he said, his voice firm and steady. “You think a baby is going to steal your career? Look at me.”
I blinked, looking up at him.
“You are the smartest person I have ever met,” Damien said, speaking with a fierce, unwavering conviction. “I’ve watched you outsmart, navigate, and survive a household that would have broken ten other people. Do you honestly think a baby is smart enough to defeat you?”
A tiny, hysterical breath of air escaped my lips, half a laugh, half a sob.
“And as for women in law,” Damien continued softly, a faint, encouraging smile touching the corners of his mouth. “Look at Justice Alistair. Look at Elena Rodriguez, senior partner at the city’s top appellate firm. Brilliant litigators. Ruthless in the courtroom. And yes, they are mothers, too. They didn’t lose their minds or their careers, Serena. They built empires with children running around their feet.”
“It’s not the same…” I started to object.
“It is the exact same,” Damien interrupted gently. “Because you are smarter just as any of them. And more importantly? You won't be doing it alone.”
He reached up, cupping my cheek with his warm palm, his thumb tracing my skin.
“You have me. You think I’m going to let you drown? You think I’m going to sit back and watch you give up your dreams to change diapers all day? Absolutely not. I will be right there beside you, handling the midnight feeds, clearing your schedule, and guarding your career with everything I have. I love your brain, Serena. I love how sharp and ambitious you are. I am not about to tie you down and clip your wings.”
He leaned in closer, pressing a tender, lingering kiss right to the tip of my nose.
“You are going to be the greatest lawyer this city has ever seen,” he whispered against my skin. “And I swear to god, you are going to be the most incredible mother, too. Because you have a heart big enough to survive anything.”
I let out a shaky, watery chuckle, a fresh wave of tears spilling over, but this time, they didn't feel like burning acid. They felt light and clean.
Damien pulled back, looking down at me with a soft, patient smile, waiting.
“So tell me, moonlight,” he whispered, his thumb brushing my lower lip. “What do you want? Should we keep the baby or not?”
I looked at him, my husband, my protector, and the man who would burn down a corrupt world just to keep me safe, and the man who was willing to shatter his own heart if it meant letting me fly.
The fear in my chest didn't magically vanish, but sitting next to him, it didn't feel terrifying anymore. It felt like a challenge we could win together.
I let out a long, shuddering breath, a small, reckless smile breaking through my tears.
“Fuck it, Damien,” I muttered, grabbing the lapels of his ruined, jacket and pulling him down into a fierce, desperate kiss. “Let’s keep it.”
