Chapter 28

Chapter 28
The Choice
The blinking line on the screen blinked at her.
It blinked again.
It felt like it was laughing, making fun of her, daring her to choose.

00:29:37

Judith’s heart beat so loud it covered every other sound.
She almost could not hear the metal hitting.
Maxwell made a hard sound as Adrian pushed the knife closer to his neck.
Their muscles locked, teeth gritted, two men fighting like wild beasts.

“End it, Judith!” Maxwell barked, his voice raw, desperate.

Her fingers shook over the keyboard. Every nerve in her screamed save him. But the red numbers glowed in her head. Half an hour, then Iron Willed would be gone. And not just that. Silencer would rise, tearing apart everything: banks empty, hospitals blind, governments mute.

Her world. Caleb’s world. All gone.

Tears blurred her sight. God, what do I do?

“Choose, darling,” Adrian snarled, pressing harder, his knife sliding down toward Maxwell’s chest. “Your empire… or your knight.”

The cursor blinked.

Judith’s throat burned. Her fingers moved.

FORCE PURGE / ALL

The screen screamed red. Sirens wailed so loud the floor seemed to vibrate. Lines of alerts shot across the screen:

CORE SYSTEM OVERRIDE — PURGE INITIATED

The countdown twitched and broke.

00:29:32
00:29:30
00:29:33 — ERROR
00:29:29

The code twisted, fighting itself, like a snake eating its tail.

Adrian’s eye widened. “What the hell did you..”

Maxwell didn’t waste the second. With a roar, he smashed his forehead into Adrian’s face. CRACK. Blood burst from Adrian’s nose. He stumbled, howling. Maxwell shoved him into the servers. Sparks exploded. The air filled with the sharp stink of burning wires.

Judith typed harder, faster. She forced the purge deeper, her hands a blur. The system resisted, snapping back like claws. But she didn’t stop.

This wasn’t just code anymore. This was her war cry.

You won’t erase me. You won’t erase my son’s future.

“Mom!” Caleb’s small voice pierced the noise. “Behind you!”

Judith spun too slow.

Adrian lunged, blood streaking his face, knife high.

She froze, then Maxwell slammed him sideways. Both men rolled across the floor, blades clashing, fists punching.

Judith’s eyes whipped back to the screen.

00:28:00 — CORE SYSTEM FAILURE
00:27:59 — SYSTEM REBOOT ENGAGED

Her stomach dropped. It’s rebooting. Not dead. Changing.

Adrian bellowed, twisting Maxwell under him. “You think you can kill Silencer? I AM Silencer!” His bloody hand smashed a hidden panel. A subroutine flared on her screen.

USER: A.KAEL — AUTHORITY REINSTATED.

The timer jumped.

00:15:00.

Half the time. Twice the danger.

Judith’s chest squeezed. Panic clawed her throat. She had bet everything… and Adrian had built himself a back door.

Maxwell’s voice, hoarse, broke through the chaos. “Judith! Don’t fight Silencer. Become it!”

Her mind spun. Become it?

Adrian sneered. “She can’t. She doesn’t have the darkness.”

Judith’s trembling stopped.

Maybe she didn’t have darkness. But she had fire. She had love. And she had rage hotter than any machine.

Her fingers blurred again. She reached deep, pulling Iron Willed’s codes, her own DNA, her own fingerprints, and jammed them inside Silencer. She hacked Adrian’s monster from the inside out, burning her mark into its heart.

Alarms screamed. Screens flashed red and white, fighting each other.

Adrian froze mid-blow. His eye widened. “No… no, you wouldn’t.”

“I already did,” Judith hissed.

She slammed her drive into the port. “Iron Willed lives.”

Light burst across the room.

The screens turned blinding white. Code shattered like glass, scattering to static. The countdown split and vanished. One by one, the servers went black.

Then silence.

Silencer was gone.

Adrian’s scream ripped through it. He slashed at Maxwell, wild with rage.

Judith moved. She grabbed a pistol, aimed, fired.

BANG.

The bullet ripped into Adrian’s shoulder. He spun, blood spraying, his knife skidding across the steel floor.

But he didn’t fall. His body shook, bleeding, broken, but somehow, he was still standing. His eye burned hate into her.

“This isn’t over,” he spat. “You can’t kill a ghost.”

Then his hand slammed down on something strapped to his belt.

A detonator.

Red lights exploded across the room.

Maxwell’s eyes widened. “Judith, grab Caleb!”

The floor rumbled. The whole chamber groaned like a beast about to collapse.

Adrian’s broken grin was the last thing she saw before fire swallowed him.

“RUN!” Maxwell roared.

Judith threw herself under the console, snatching Caleb into her arms. The first explosion roared, shaking the ceiling. Dust and stone fell like rain. Sirens screamed.

Maxwell grabbed her hand, dragging her through smoke and fire toward the lift. The ground split behind them. Sparks rained from dying servers.

The lift doors slammed just as the vault imploded.

The three of them, Judith, Caleb, Maxwell went up fast in the metal cage while the ground under them broke in fire..

Judith coughed hard, dust went in her throat, she held Caleb so tight he could not move.

Maxwell leaned against the wall, his shirt was wet and red with blood. His face pale, eyes heavy.

“Maxwell?” she whispered, voice breaking.

He gave her the smallest smile. Almost peaceful.

Then his eyes rolled back. His body crumpled.

“MAXWELL!”Judith screamed his name and shook him hard. But Maxwell stayed still, eyes closed. He did not move at all. She was scared.

The lift kept climbing.
And she had no idea if he would ever open his eyes again.
Judith’s tears ran down her face, hot and fast. Caleb pushed his face into her chest, shaking. The lift shook and climbed, taking them up into a world that suddenly felt too big and too dark.
